UNLABELLED: Iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) affects up to 30% of all pregnant women often causing symptoms including malaise and lethargy which can significantly impact daily life and well-being. Additionally, IDA is associated with serious complications, including an increased risk of bleeding, preterm birth, small for gestational age babies and rarely, but significantly, stillbirth. The most common current management approach reactively treats IDA once it is diagnosed, usually with an oral iron preparation such as ferrous sulphate or another ferrous salt. There have been calls to investigate a

Whipple's disease is a rare and chronic multisystem infection caused by Tropheryma whipplei. Its protean and often nonspecific clinical manifestations frequently delay diagnosis, increasing the risk of irreversible organ damage. A 54-year-old man was referred for evaluation of persistently elevated inflammatory markers and iron-deficiency anemia. He was initially asymptomatic but subsequently developed intermittent fever, unintentional weight loss, and occasional nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. A CT revealed retroperitoneal lymphadenopathy. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy demonstrated diffuse

IMPORTANCE: Case reports describe persistent erectile dysfunction (PED) associated with exposure to 5α-reductase inhibitors (5α-RIs). Clinical trial reports and the manufacturers' full prescribing information (FPI) for finasteride and dutasteride state that risk of sexual adverse effects is not increased by longer duration of 5α-RI exposure and that sexual adverse effects of 5α-RIs resolve in men who discontinue exposure.
OBJECTIVE: Our chief objective was to assess whether longer duration of 5α-RI exposure increases risk of PED, independent of age and other known risk factors. Men with short

IMPORTANCE: Breastfed infants are at risk of iron deficiency, which is associated with suboptimal development. There is a paucity of evidence on the effects of iron supplementation on child development, and current guidelines are divergent.
OBJECTIVE: To assess whether daily iron supplementation, 1 mg/kg, between 4 and 9 months in exclusively or predominantly breastfed infants improves psychomotor development at 12 months.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial conducted between December 2015 and May 2020 with follow-up through May 20

Background/Objectives: Preoperative anemia and iron deficiency increase transfusion risk in cardiac surgery. We evaluated outcomes associated with a Patient Blood Management (PBM) pathway and assessed the robustness of these associations to baseline imbalance and secular trends. Methods: This single-center retrospective cohort study compared PBM patients treated in 2019, 2022, and 2023 with historical controls from 2017-2018. Outcomes included red blood cell (RBC) transfusion, length of stay, readmission, mortality, safety events, and costs. Analyses included multivariable regression, propensi

PURPOSE: In cardiovascular surgeries, iron deficiency anemia and transfusion of blood products are associated with mortality and morbidity, prolonged hospital stay and poor patient outcomes. Patient blood management (PBM) is a patient-centered approach based on a 'three pillar' model that promotes optimum use of blood and blood products to improve outcomes. This study assessed the potential budget impact of implementing PBM in patients undergoing elective cardiovascular surgery in a private hospital in Turkey.
METHODS: Two models were developed to estimate the hospital budget impact of PBM. T

Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is prevalent in pregnancy, yet oral iron therapies are associated with poor adherence and many intravenous (IV) iron formulations require multiple doses for treatment. Ferric derisomaltose (FDI) is a newer IV iron formulation that is safe and efficacious in non-pregnant individuals, yet pregnancy data is lacking. We evaluated the safety, efficacy, and maternal and neonatal outcomes associated with a single 1000 mg IV dose of FDI in pregnant individuals with IDA. We conducted a prospective, single-arm interventional trial of FDI administered in the second or third t

BACKGROUND: There is increasing evidence supporting the use of intravenous (IV) iron in the perioperative setting, which has been shown to improve hemoglobin levels and reduce the need for transfusion. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a single preoperative IV infusion of ferric derisomaltose administered 3 to 4 weeks prior to abdominal surgery in increasing hemoglobin (Hb) levels.
METHODS: This single arm prospective trial with pos-hoc matched controls included adult patients with preoperative iron deficiency anemia (Hb ≤ 12 g/dL, and ferritin<30 ng/mL or transferrin saturation <

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for about a third of all deaths. Traditional risk factors like hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and obesity are well known, but iron also plays a crucial role in heart health. Iron is essential for oxygen transport, mitochondrial function, and heart muscle activity, and both deficiency and overload can harm cardiovascular outcomes. This review examines studies on iron metabolism, regulation via the hepcidin-ferroportin pathway, myocardial energy, oxidative stress, and clinical trials of iron supplementation or redu

Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is a rare autosomal dominant vascular disease with a high risk of iron deficiency anemia secondary to epistaxis and gastrointestinal bleeding. Atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with a high risk of ischemic stroke and oral anticoagulation therapy is indicated for its prevention. Percutaneous left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) is recommended to prevent stroke in patients with AF and high risk of bleeding such as HHT patients. However, double antiplatelet therapy at first, followed by long-term single antiplatelet therapy, is also recommended aft

BACKGROUND: Hiatal hernia (HH) is an often overlooked cause of chronic anemia, and the therapeutic role of surgical HH repair (HHr) in these cases remains underexplored. Thus, we assessed the prevalence of anemia and visible Cameron lesions in patients undergoing primary HHr, explored associations with hernia size, and evaluated objective postoperative improvements.
METHODS: This retrospective, observational study used a prospectively maintained surgical database at a high-volume tertiary referral center to identify patients with anemia or upper gastrointestinal bleeding who underwent HHr bet

Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is a common neurological disorder characterized by an irresistible urge to move the legs, often accompanied by uncomfortable sensations. These symptoms typically worsen during periods of rest or in the evening and are partially or temporarily relieved by movement. Variant RLS is diagnosed when these core symptoms extend to extra-leg regions-such as the arms, abdomen, or bladder-while still fulfilling the diagnostic criteria established by the International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group. We report a case of an adult female patient with refractory right shoulder

Cancer-related anemia (CRA) is a common complication during and after cancer treatment. It contributes to impaired functional capacity, reduced quality of life (QoL), and worse prognosis Iron deficiency (ID) is a frequent underlying cause; therefore, intravenous iron replacement may improve both hematologic and patient-centered outcomes. However, prospective data on QoL and functional status in CRA remain limited. We prospectively evaluated the effects of ferric carboxymaltose (FCM) on QoL and cardiorespiratory fitness in cancer patients with ID. A prospective observational study was conducted

According to the World Health Organization, Anemia is a health concern that impacts a substantial number of individuals globally, with 50% of cases due to iron deficiency and the remaining 50% being caused by other conditions and vitamin deficiencies. Iron deficiency anemia can cause several health issues, such as weakness, exhaustion, poor cognitive function, and a higher chance of pregnancy difficulties. Iron supplementation, particularly through dietary sources and supplement formulations, is fundamental in addressing this condition and is favored for managing mild to moderate cases. Ferrou

Dog anemia can result in symptoms such as lethargy, reduced appetite, weight loss, and dull coat, and in severe cases, it can become life-threatening. Currently available nutritional supplements for addressing anemia in pets often suffer from low bioavailability and significant side effects. This study investigates the effects of taurine and betaine on the survival and functionality of canine erythrocytes in vitro under conditions of nutritional anemia induced by the iron chelator desferrioxamine (DFO). Our findings indicate that taurine and betaine significantly enhance erythrocyte resilience
