BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major global public health concern and has reached epidemic proportions worldwide, including in our country. Iron deficiency and functional iron deficiency (FID) are common among CKD patients. The objective of this study was to examine the prevalence of FID and its effect on mortality in hemodialysis (HD) patients.
METHODS: A retrospective observational study was conducted between 2010 and 2024 in patients receiving HD in our hospital. Patients who had been on HD for at least three months were included in the study. Exclusion criteria included per

Angiodysplasia is an acquired vascular malformation that accounts for a substantial proportion of lower gastrointestinal bleeding in older adults, most often involving the cecum and ascending colon. Although endoscopic and endovascular therapies are considered first-line treatments, a subset of patients develops refractory bleeding that requires a multimodal approach. The objective of this case report is to highlight the management of early endovascular failure in a well-localized cecal angiodysplasia and to illustrate the role of timely right hemicolectomy in achieving sustained remission. We

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Gastric antral vascular ectasia (GAVE) causes iron-deficiency anemia and gastrointestinal bleeding, sometimes requiring frequent transfusions. Argon plasma coagulation (APC) is effective for treating lesions, but newer methods like endoscopic band ligation (EBL) need to be explored.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Conducted at a tertiary referral center in India, this single-blinded, prospective, parallel-group randomized study involved 60 patients assigned (1:1) to APC or EBL for endoscopic GAVE obliteration. The primary outcome was clinical success, defined as lesion oblite

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Bleeding secondary to upper gastrointestinal angioectasias requires medical intervention, hospitalization, and transfusions. Endoscopic and medical therapies have been used to treat upper gastrointestinal angioectasias. Therapeutic efficacy of treatment modalities used in management of upper gastrointestinal angioectasias, specifically short- and long-term outcomes, remains an area of interest.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study utilizing TriNetX. ICD codes were used to identify patients with angioectasias of the upper gastrointestinal tract

Background: Alopecia areata (AA) is a chronic autoimmune disorder characterized by non-scarring hair loss and commonly coexists with other autoimmune diseases, suggesting systemic immune dysregulation. An association between AA and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) has been proposed, though prior studies have yielded conflicting results. Objective: Our aim was to examine the association between AA and IDA in a large, population-based cohort. Methods: We conducted a retrospective case-control study using data from a health maintenance organization (HMO) serving approximately 2.35 million individuals

Intravenous (IV) iron is used to replenish iron stores in patients with iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) who do not benefit from oral iron supplementation. Hypophosphatemia is an increasingly recognized adverse event associated with certain IV iron formulations. Mild/moderate hypophosphatemia may be asymptomatic or present with symptoms similar to those seen in patients with IDA, including fatigue, malaise, and muscle weakness. Persistent hypophosphatemia can cause osteomalacia due to reduced bone mineralization, leading to bone pain and pseudofractures. Ferric carboxymaltose (FCM) can impact phos

BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) accounts for a significant proportion of all gastroenterology referrals. Current British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) guidance recommends bidirectional endoscopy as first-line investigation and reserves small-bowel or renal-tract investigation for patients with recurrent IDA or inadequate response to iron replacement therapy (IRT) after negative endoscopy. Advanced imaging modalities represent high financial costs to the NHS, but their diagnostic yield in this specific cohort is debated.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the utilisation and observed diagnos

Severe iron deficiency anemia (IDA) secondary to parasitic infestation is uncommon in modern clinical practice but remains an important diagnostic consideration in endemic regions and vulnerable populations. We present the case of a 61-year-old male patient who presented to the emergency department following a syncopal episode and fall and was found to have profound anemia with an initial hemoglobin level of 2.5 g/dL and a serum ferritin of 1.96 ng/ml. Initial diagnostic workup with contrast-enhanced computed tomography of the abdomen and pelvis excluded acute intra-abdominal hemorrhage but de

BACKGROUND: Iron-deficiency anemia is common in patients undergoing hemodialysis, and intravenous iron therapy is often preferred because oral iron is poorly tolerated and less effective. Ferric caboxymaltose, a high-dose intravenous iron formulation, has recently become available in Japan. However, evidence regarding its efficacy and safety in hemodialysis patients remains limited. Therefore, this study investigated the efficacy and safety of a single intravenous administration of ferric carboxymaltose containing 500 mg of iron in Japanese patients undergoing hemodialysis.
METHODS: A 12-week

Migraine headache is a common primary headache disorder which is multifactorial in origin. On the other hand, iron deficiency anemia causes metabolic abnormalities in the brain which leads to a reduction in neuronal activities. The study was designed to determine the association between iron deficiency anemia and migraine. This was a case-control study which was conducted among patients attending at the outpatient department of Neurology of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital with migraine headache fulfilling the International Headache Society criteria and non-Migraine age and sex matched heal

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Guidelines recommend EGD and colonoscopy to investigate iron deficiency anemia (IDA), but not small-bowel examination. The aim of the study was to determine the diagnostic yield and location of lesions causing IDA by performing a pan-enteric examination.
METHODS: In a prospective, multicenter clinical trial involving 2 public hospitals (United Kingdom and Hong Kong) and a private health center (Hungary), patients underwent small-bowel capsule endoscopy, EGD, and colonoscopy. All lesions identified were described by a blinded consensus panel using a diagnostic register and

PURPOSE: Although hematology/oncology (H/O) topics are essential for clinicians, many internal medicine (IM) residents perceive inadequate H/O education. This perception may be due to the lack of a standardized H/O curriculum. To address this gap, we aimed to achieve consensus about the most important H/O topics for IM residents to learn.
METHODS: In 2023, we conducted a 2-round modified Delphi study of IM generalists and H/O specialists at the University of California, San Francisco and Stanford University. In round 1, participants rated the importance of H/O topics on a 5-point scale (1 = v

OBJECTIVES: Iron deficiency (ID) is frequent in heart failure (HF). Among patients with HF and ID, those with impaired iron transport (IIT) (transferrin saturation (TSAT) <20%) have the worst ID phenotype. In HF, exercise limitation is mainly related to abnormality in oxygen delivery (VO2) and utilisation and/or to ventilation inefficiency. We evaluated whether it is possible to identify the leading cause of exercise limitation in patients with HF and IIT.
DESIGN: Observational study.
SETTING: Retrospective study.
PARTICIPANTS: We analysed 1043 consecutive hospitalised patients with HF (66±

BACKGROUND: Gestational anemia remains an important public health problem, especially in developing countries, and is associated with adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes. Prophylactic iron supplementation during pregnancy is a simple and effective strategy to prevent this condition and is routinely recommended during prenatal care. In Brazil, supplements are provided free of charge through the public health system; however, adherence to treatment remains variable. This study aimed to identify the sociodemographic and healthcare-related factors associated with inadequate iron supplementatio

Iron deficiency anemia affects one-third of the global human population. Paradoxically, the daily iron required to fuel the production red blood cell (RBC) and prevent anemia is provided through its recycling from senescent RBC. This is achieved by splenic red pulp macrophages (RPM) that extract iron from the heme groups of hemoglobin (Hb). How these professional erythrophagocytic macrophages prevent intracellular iron flux from inducing cell death via ferroptosis is unknown. Here we show that SPI-C, the master transcriptional regulator of the erythrophagocytic lineage, orchestrates two redund

Iron is an essential element as it participates in a wide variety of metabolic processes, including oxygen transport, deoxyribonucleic acid synthesis and electron transport. However, as iron can form free radicals, its concentration in body tissues must be tightly regulated because, in excessive amounts, it can lead to tissue damage. Disorders of iron metabolism are among the most common diseases of humans with diverse clinical manifestations. Iron deficiency is the most common mineral deficiency, affecting approximately 20% of the population. Patients may present with an iron deficiency witho

COVID-19 infection is associated with multi-system complications other than primary pulmonary disease. It is well-documented that it causes an inflammatory response, which in severe cases can lead to pathologies in other organ systems. Gastrointestinal (GI) manifestations are common and includes anorexia, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. An uncommon GI manifestation in COVID-19 infection is GI bleeding (GIB). Angioectasia is one of the rare causes of GIB, not very common, reasonably straightforward to diagnose, but difficult to treat, with no consensus in the literature on the

Anemia is a major global health problem, particularly in developing countries such as India, due to the greater prevalence of dietary iron deficiency, hemoglobinopathies, macronutrient deficiencies, and infections such as malaria, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and hookworm infestation. Anemia-induced hypoxia triggers a range of vascular and structural changes in the placenta, potentially leading to complications for both the mother and the fetus. Studies have shown that placentae from anemic mothers often exhibit hypertrophy, characterized by increased placental weight relative to fetal

Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) is an uncommon cerebrovascular condition with highly variable clinical presentations and a wide spectrum of underlying causes. Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) has been increasingly recognized as a significant predisposing factor for CVT. We describe the case of a 45-year-old woman who presented with a gradually intensifying headache, followed by acute onset of left facial palsy and left-sided weakness. Laboratory tests demonstrated microcytic, hypochromic anemia, consistent with IDA. Computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and magnetic resonanc
