To investigate potential causal links between sarcopenia and iron deficiency anemia (IDA), we conducted a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study using genome-wide association study data. Instrumental variables were selected based on genome-wide significance (P < 5 × 10-⁸), linkage disequilibrium pruning (r2 < 0.001), minor allele frequency > 0.01, and F-statistics > 10. Analysis used inverse-variance weighted method, with MR-Egger, weighted median, and weighted mode for robustness. Sensitivity analyses included Mendelian randomization pleiotropy residual sum and outlier, MR-Egger regres

Background: Patients undergoing hemodialysis commonly exhibit deficiencies in water-soluble vitamins, primarily as a result of inadequate dietary intake and loss into the dialysate. Given the essential role of vitamin C in numerous metabolic pathways, routine supplementation has been proposed as a potentially beneficial intervention in this population. Aim: We aimed to evaluate the current evidence on vitamin C supplementation in patients undergoing hemodialysis, with particular attention to clinical conditions associated with renal replacement therapy, including anemia, chronic inflammation,

BACKGROUND: Uterine leiomyomata (or fibroids) are common benign tumors of the uterus. Fibroids are classified into subtypes by location: submucosal, intramural, subserosal. Although the symptomology and comorbidities associated with fibroids have been extensively assessed, there is less knowledge regarding factors associated with fibroid subtypes. We tested the associations between fibroid subtypes and a broad range of clinical diagnoses to characterize their shared and unique comorbidity profiles.

INTRODUCTION: Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) causes various age-related symptoms, including epistaxis, telangiectasia, and anemia. These symptoms often require a variety of treatments, including iron supplementation and blood transfusions. The resulting anemia can lead to atypical presentations of comorbidities, such as diabetes.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 46-year-old Hispanic woman with a history of HHT presented for diabetes evaluation due to asymptomatic, elevated nonfasting blood glucose despite normal hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels. Following initiation of continuous glucose monito

BACKGROUND: Hypoxic microenvironment is an important characteristic of solid tumors. A series of adaptations associated with hypoxia occur in cancer cells, including reprogramming of multiple metabolic pathways. Gastrointestinal bleeding is a common clinical symptom of CRC, resulting in anemia and iron deficiency. CRC patients have unbalanced iron homeostasis due to blood loss, chronic inflammation, etc. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the effect of hypoxia-induced reprogramming of iron metabolism on chemosensitivity in CRC remain unclear.
METHODS: RIP-seq combined with lncRNA-se

AIMS: The prevalence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in the Netherlands is approximately 100,000 individuals currently (578 per 100,000 inhabitant), and is rising. Iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) is common in patients with IBD, secondary to chronic blood loss and impaired iron absorption. Intravenous iron is recommended as first-line treatment in patients with clinically active IBD, with previous intolerance to oral iron and in patients who need erythropoietin stimulating agents. The objective was to evaluate the difference in treatment costs and consequential costs of ferric derisomaltose (

This systematic review and meta-analysis assessed the efficacy and safety of ferric carboxymaltose (FCM) in treating iron-deficiency anemia secondary to gastrointestinal bleeding. A comprehensive search across multiple databases identified randomized controlled trials comparing FCM with other iron formulations. A total of 13 publications, reporting 16 trials and involving 1939 patients, were included. Pooled analyses demonstrated that FCM led to significantly greater improvements in key anemia parameters compared to alternative iron therapies, including a higher hemoglobin response rate [risk

Malignant melanoma is the most common tumour to metastasise to the gastrointestinal (GI) tract; however, symptomatic involvement is uncommon during life. We report a case of small bowel metastatic melanoma presenting as a large aneurysmal jejunal mass in an elderly man with chronic iron-deficiency anaemia and weight loss many years after excision of early-stage cutaneous melanomas. Despite cross-sectional imaging and endoscopic investigations, diagnosis remained uncertain until exploratory laparotomy was performed. En bloc resection of the jejunal segment with associated mesentery achieved com

Uterine leiomyomas are noncancerous smooth muscle neoplasms that occur in up to 70% of women and the single most common cause of hysterectomy. There is a variety of treatments available for uterine leiomyomas, including medications, uterine artery embolization, myomectomy, and hysterectomy but surgical treatments predominate. Medical optimization of anemia is often required prior to surgical treatment secondary to heavy menstrual bleeding and resultant iron deficiency anemia from chronic blood loss. While iron and multivitamins are critical to increase hemoglobin, pharmacologic therapy to supp

Rendu-Osler disease is a rare, autosomal dominant vascular malformation disorder with diverse clinical manifestations. It commonly presents with recurrent epistaxis, iron deficiency, and secondary anemia. The condition affects small vessels in the nasal, oral, and gastrointestinal mucosa, the skin of the face, lips, and fingertips, and solid organs. This article discusses general and specific manifestations of the disease, along with its general and particular management. A case presentation is included to demonstrate that treatment must be individualized, taking into account all aspects of th

Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is estimated to affect over 1.2 billion people worldwide and is particularly common in children and reproductive-age women in low- and middle-income countries. Iron deficiency (ID) without anemia has an even higher prevalence. Absolute ID is caused by increased iron requirements, inadequate iron intake, impaired iron absorption, and chronic blood loss. ID triggers multiple adaptive physiological mechanisms, including modifications in cellular iron handling orchestrated by iron regulatory proteins, as well as alterations in systemic iron handling secondary to suppre

We report a rare case of a female patient in her early 50s who presented with unilateral transient visual symptoms that resolved shortly. On examination, the anterior segment exam was unremarkable bilaterally; however, her fundus examination showed unilateral anaemic retinopathy, including Roth spots. Her blood tests showed iron deficiency anaemia due to chronic menorrhagia, and her abdominal ultrasound scan showed large uterine fibroids. The gynaecology team was involved; medical therapy failed to control her heavy menstrual bleeding and subsequently correct her anaemia; thus, surgical manage

BACKGROUND: Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia (HHT), also known as Osler-Weber-Rendu syndrome, is a rare autosomal dominant vascular disorder. It is characterized by abnormal blood vessel formation, leading to arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) and telangiectasias, which can cause chronic or acute bleeding. This report presents the case of a 44-year-old Saudi female with severe recurrent iron deficiency anemia (IDA) of an unknown etiology, highlighting the diagnostic challenges and the importance of a thorough clinical and family history.
OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of this case stud

INTRODUCTION: Infestation with Pediculus species, or common lice, is frequently diagnosed in the emergency department (ED). Because lice ingest human blood, prolonged and heavy infestation can plausibly lead to iron deficiency anemia. Severe anemia attributable to lice infestation has infrequently been reported to date. Our objective in this study was to retrospectively review cases of lice-related anemia at a single public hospital to identify risk factors and associated demographic and clinical features of this disease process.
METHODS: We screened the medical records for patients presentin

A female patient in her 80s presented with chronic iron-deficiency anaemia secondary to gastric antral vascular ectasia (GAVE), despite repeated endoscopic treatment. Her medical history was notable for chronic myeloid leukaemia, for which she took imatinib. Due to a possible association between imatinib and GAVE described in a small number of case reports, cessation of imatinib was trialled. This led to a significant improvement in the patient's anaemia and resolution of GAVE on repeat endoscopy. GAVE is an uncommon cause of gastrointestinal bleeding, the aetiology of which is uncertain. Iron is an essential nutrient and a constituent of ferroproteins and enzymes crucial for human life. Generally, nonmenstruating individuals preserve iron very efficiently, losing less than 0.1% of their body iron content each day, an amount that is replaced through dietary iron absorption. Most of the iron is in the hemoglobin (Hb) of red blood cells (RBCs); thus, blood loss is the most common cause of acute iron depletion and anemia worldwide, and reduced hemoglobin synthesis and anemia are the most common consequences of low plasma iron concentrations. The term iron deficiency (ID) refers to

Anemia is a common complication of chronic kidney disease (CKD) that has been classically attributed to inadequate production of endogenous erythropoietin.1 Though there are many other common causes of refractory anemia in CKD like iron deficiency, vitamin B12, and folic acid deficiency, noncompliance to dialysis and erythropoietin therapy rare causes like blood loss, bone marrow failure, infections causing aplastic crisis like CMV, parvovirus B19 should be ruled out. Parvovirus has an extreme tropism for erythroid cells and is an uncommon cause of anemia in patients with CKD on maintenance di

Anemia in a patient with cirrhosis is a clinically pertinent but often overlooked clinical entity. Relevant guidelines highlight the algorithmic approach of managing a patient of cirrhosis presenting with acute variceal hemorrhage but day-to-day management in hospital and out-patient raises multiple dilemmas: Whether anemia is a disease complication or a part of the disease spectrum? Should iron, folic acid, and vitamin B complex supplementation and nutritional advice, suffice in those who can perform tasks of daily living but have persistently low hemoglobin. How does one investigate and mana

Pediculosis is a parasitic infestation of the human head and body by Pediculus humanus. This is a benign condition commonly seen in children and capable of causing severe pruritus. The parasite thrives on human blood and in some cases, the volume of blood loss over time could be large enough to precipitate anemic symptoms in the patient. We describe the case of a 13-year-old girl who presented with shortness of breath on exertion, palpitations, and easy fatigability. An incidental finding of Pediculus humanus capitis infestation was made during physical examination. Complete laboratory investi
