OBJECTIVES: Colchicine is an essential component of familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) treatment. It is suggested that it may affect vitamin B12 levels by affecting intestinal absorption. This research focused on examining the impact of colchicine therapy on anemia parameters, as well as levels of vitamin B12 and folate in patients who have recently been diagnosed with FMF.
METHOD: This prospective cohort investigation assessed children diagnosed with FMF between October 2016 and February 2017, evaluating anemia parameters as well as vitamin B12 and folate levels at baseline and at the third

Perioperative anemia and coagulopathy are frequent yet modifiable conditions in pediatric patients with medical complexity, significantly influencing surgical morbidity and mortality. Iron deficiency anemia is the most common type of anemia, underscoring the importance of early detection, dietary modification, and timely oral or intravenous iron supplementation. Restrictive transfusion thresholds and selective use of erythropoiesis-stimulating agents are recommended to reduce transfusion-related complications. Management of other nutritional (folate, vitamin B12, copper, and zinc) and non-nutr

Low-dose methotrexate (MTX) (5-25 mg/week) is widely used in the treatment of autoimmune diseases and is considered relatively safe. There have been reports of toxicities caused by MTX, but the characteristics remain unclear. Through a retrospective case series at our hospital, we describe the clinical features, management, and outcomes of adverse reactions caused by MTX. This is a retrospective, single-center case series of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) who developed adverse reactions while receiving low-dose MTX (5-25 mg/week) between March 2022 and August 2025. There is a tacit assumption that the majority of nutritional anemia is caused by iron deficiency. However, several other key micronutrients are involved in iron and/or erythrocyte metabolism and thus play a role in the development of nutritional anemia. This consensus paper provides an updated review that synthesizes current evidence on the role of individual micronutrients, beyond iron, in the development of nutritional anemia and identifies emerging hypotheses and potential mechanistic links to erythropoiesis and iron metabolism involving nutrients of both established and growing interest. OBJECTIVES: Red blood cell (RBC) morphology in peripheral blood smears (PBS) remains essential for the differential diagnosis of anemia and other hematologic disorders. As yet unclassified poikilocytes, fish-shaped RBCs and pincer (mushroom-shaped) cells are rarely observed but have been described as "bizarre erythrocytes" and linked to hereditary spherocytosis. This study aimed to investigate their relevance across a spectrum of hematologic diseases and provide a basis for future morphological standardization.
METHODS: Peripheral blood smears from 251 specimens were systematically reviewed,

Pernicious anemia (PA) is an autoimmune-mediated vitamin B12 deficiency that classically presents with macrocytic anemia and neurologic dysfunction. The case described highlights a rare variant of PA that paralleled concerns for microangiopathic hemolytic anemia (MAHA) like thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP). A 40-year-old African American female with limited past medical history presented with progressive fatigue, lower-extremity weakness, gait instability, and ataxia, accompanied by chronic gastrointestinal symptoms, weight loss, and menorrhagia. Initial evaluation revealed profound m

Megaloblastic anemia may present with biochemical features suggestive of hemolysis, creating diagnostic uncertainty. We describe two middle-aged women who presented with severe symptomatic macrocytic anemia, markedly elevated lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), undetectable haptoglobin, and low reticulocyte counts. Further investigation confirmed a combined vitamin B12 and folate deficiency. No definitive underlying cause was identified, although long-term proton pump inhibitor (PPI) use was considered a potential contributing factor to vitamin B12 deficiency. Both patients were treated with vitamin

RATIONALE: Vitamin B12 deficiency is an important public health problem in children, and has been associated with anaemia and impaired growth, cognition, and development. Vitamin B12 deficiency may develop in children due to lower content in breast milk, low dietary intake, and as requirements increase with age. Vitamin B12 supplementation may confer benefits to child growth and development, due to its role in DNA synthesis and methylation, red blood cell formation, and folate metabolism. However, no systematic reviews have been conducted to examine the effects of vitamin B12 supplementation i

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies may impact the oral mucosa even before any other symptoms become clinically obvious. This makes the oral cavity an important site for early detection of nutritional imbalance. Across the literature review, the most documented vitamin is vitamin B12. Other widely reported nutrients are iron, folate, and zinc. Less consistently documented are vitamins A, C, and D. Their correlation with recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS), atrophic glossitis, angular cheilitis, burning mouth symptoms (BMS), mucosal erythema, and oral candidiasis (OC) is bro

BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is the most common form of anemia worldwide. Emerging evidence suggests that vitamin D (VD) and micronutrient deficiencies may impair erythropoiesis and iron metabolism. However, clinical data on their combined effects in the Indian population are limited.
OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the impact of adjunctive VD supplementation alongside iron-containing micronutrient supplements and additional minerals (oral IDA therapy) in VD-sufficient (VD-S) and VD-deficient (VD-D) adults >18 years.
METHODS: IDA participants were categorized in Group I (VD-S+Fe,

Background Nutritional deficiencies persist as a major public health challenge in India alongside a rising non-communicable disease burden. The Center for Nutritional Health at AIIMS Mangalagiri provides comprehensive nutritional services including counseling, anthropometric assessment, and laboratory diagnosis of key deficiencies. We aimed to determine the prevalence of anemia, vitamin D and vitamin B12 deficiencies, and malnutrition (underweight and overweight/obesity); examine gender-based differences in nutritional parameters; identify patterns of multiple concurrent deficiencies; and anal

Nutritional anemia remains one of the most persistent global health disorders, affecting populations across all age groups, particularly women, children, and individuals from low- and middle-income countries. Although iron deficiency has traditionally been considered the principal cause of nutritional anemia, emerging data indicate that anemia frequently results from intricate interactions among multi-micronutrient deficiencies, including folate, vitamin B12, vitamin A, zinc, copper, selenium, and antioxidant vitamins. Micronutrients regulate erythropoiesis, iron homeostasis, DNA synthesis, ox

BACKGROUND: India has a high prevalence of anemia, vitamin B12 deficiency, and maternal folate insufficiency with associated spina bifida and anencephaly (SBA). Fortifying household iodized table salt can be a strategy to prevent several micronutrient deficiencies.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the effectiveness of quadruple fortified salt (QFS) on serum folate, vitamin B12, and iron concentrations after 4 months of intervention.
METHOD AND MATERIAL: A nonrandomized controlled trial using a pre- and post-intervention evaluation design was implemented from July 1, 2022, to November 30, 2022 in four r

Diabetes mellitus and obesity represent a growing global health burden with high morbidity and mortality. In the last several years, novel incretin-based therapies have been developed, and their use has risen dramatically. Beyond their proven metabolic, glycemic, cardiovascular, renal, and many other benefits, there are some observational data linking anemia development with their use. From the era of gliptins to retatrutide, in this review we tried to explore whether erythroid suppression is the hidden paradigm of advanced incretin-based therapies. Potential pathophysiological explanations in

BACKGROUND: Madagascar faces persistently high rates of anemia and undernutrition, yet limited nationally representative data on micronutrient (MN) deficiencies impede evidence-based interventions. MN deficiencies and infections such as malaria are known to interact and jointly contribute to this burden.
OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalence and co-occurrence of malaria, anemia, inflammation, and MN deficiencies among preschool children (PSC), adolescent boys and girls, and non-pregnant women.
METHODS: The 2024 National Micronutrient Survey used a 2-stage probabilistic design across 23 regi

BACKGROUND: Metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) is associated with postoperative nutritional deficiencies, yet whether temporal shifts in surgical practice and healthcare delivery have influenced the risk of nutritional anemia remains unclear. We compared the 2-year incidence of postoperative nutritional anemia between patients who underwent MBS between 2015 and 2017 and 2022-2023.
METHODS: Using the TriNetX Global Collaborative Network, we conducted a propensity score-matched cohort study of adult patients undergoing laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy or Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. The primary

Malaria is an infectious disease caused by parasitic protozoans of the genus Plasmodium. Malaria control efforts on a global scale are in danger due to the emergence and spread of drug-resistant malaria. Despite stakeholders' dedication to the prevention and treatment of malaria, the current state of global health does not offer an effective answer to the issue of drug resistance. Furthermore, there is an information gap about the molecular mechanisms of Plasmodium falciparum's drug resistance, which makes it difficult to develop monitoring systems. Most countries lack adequate and comprehensi

BACKGROUND: Since lifestyle changes are main therapies for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), changing dietary components (nutritional or bioactive) may play a parallel important role. Few studies have assessed the effects of curcumin on NAFLD (mainly antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects). We aimed to determine the effects of nano-curcumin (NC) on overweight/obese NAFLD patients by assessing glucose, lipids, inflammation, insulin resistance, and liver function indices, especially through nesfatin.
METHODS: This double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial was condu

PURPOSE: Increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) released by NADPH oxidase and inflammation are associated with arterial hypertension and eye diseases associated with high blood pressure, including glaucoma, retinopathies (e.g., age-related macular degeneration), and choroidopathies affecting ocular function; however, the mechanisms underlying these adverse outcomes remain undefined. The present study was designed to highlight the importance of oxidative stress in severe hypertension-related eye damage.
METHODS: Male Wistar rats (n = 7, unless otherwise specified for specific experiments) wer
