Efficacy and safety of Siddha regimen for management of mild to moderate iron deficiency anaemia amongst reproductive age-group women as compared to iron folic acid supplements: A protocol for an open labelled, multicentric randomized equivalence trial.

BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency anaemia is the most prevalent dietary deficiency anaemia, affecting 30% of the global population. According to WHO (2019), anaemia affects 500 million women (15-49 years) globally. In India, 57.2% of women in this age group are anaemic despite the "Anaemia Mukt Bharat Programme". The main challenge with standard iron and folic acid therapy is poor compliance due to forgetfulness and gastrointestinal side effects, necessitating alternative treatments like Siddha medicines with better efficacy and tolerability. OBJECTIVE: The primary objective is to compare the effic

Autoimmune diseases and autoimmune polyglandular syndromes in adult patients with biopsy-confirmed celiac disease: A prospective study.

Celiac disease (CD) is an immune-mediated disorder frequently associated with autoimmune diseases (ADs) and nutritional deficiencies. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and spectrum of additional ADs and autoimmune polyglandular syndromes (APS), as well as micronutrient deficiencies, in adults with biopsy-confirmed CD. This prospective observational study included 102 adults with previously diagnosed, biopsy-confirmed CD who were under regular outpatient follow-up. Demographic and clinical characteristics, additional ADs, APS subtypes, laboratory parameters, micronutrient deficiencie

Levels of adherence, barriers and facilitators to antenatal supplementation of iron-containing supplements in sixty-nine low- and middle-income countries: a secondary analysis of demographic and health surveys data.

Fe-deficiency anaemia is common during pregnancy and can lead to serious health consequences for mothers and babies. Antenatal Fe supplementation is associated with lower anaemia prevalence and improved pregnancy outcomes, and the WHO recommends daily oral Fe (30-60 mg) with folic acid (0·4 mg) during pregnancy. However, data on uptake and adherence in many low- and middle-income countries remain fragmented and outdated. We conducted a secondary analysis of Demographic and Health Surveys from sixty-nine low- and middle-income countries to assess uptake and adherence to Fe-containing supplement

Complete Resolution of Unprovoked Left Renal Vein Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolism Associated With Severe Iron Deficiency Anemia: A Five-Year Follow-Up Case Report and Dual-Energy CT Appraisal.

Combined renal vein thrombosis (RVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) in young adults without nephrotic syndrome, malignancy, or an identified major thrombophilia is uncommon. Severe iron deficiency anemia (IDA) has been associated with increased thrombotic risk, although a causal relationship cannot be established from an individual case. A 21-year-old male patient presented with flank and chest pain. Diagnostic workup confirmed acute left RVT and an acute embolism of the posterior basal segmental artery of the right lower lobe with pulmonary infarction, concurrent with profound microcytic IDA (he

Anemia Mukt Bharat Index: Methodology and State Rankings of Iron and Folic Acid Supplementation Coverage in India, 2018-2019 to 2022-2023.

In 2018, the Government of India launched the Anemia Mukt Bharat (AMB) program to accelerate reductions in the prevalence of anemia among children aged 6-59 months, children aged 5-9 years, adolescents aged 10-19 years, pregnant women, and lactating mothers through 6 programmatic interventions and 6 institutional mechanisms. We describe the process of computing the AMB index, aimed at providing timely and systematic information on iron and folic acid (IFA) supplementation coverage across these groups to aid in evaluating the effectiveness of the program. This study presents data from fiscal ye

Effect of Vitamin B12 Supplementation on Hematological and Athropometric Parameters in Children With Severe Acute Malnutrition, Aged 1 to 60 Months in Nutritional Rehabilitation Center (RCT).

Microcytic hypochromic anemia is common in severe acute malnutrition (SAM) children, but macrocytic anemia (vitamin B12/folate deficiency) is not uncommon. Vitamin B12 deficiency leads to anemia and developmental slowing. We looked for the response of vitamin B12 supplementation on hematological and anthropometric parameters in SAM children. All children aged 1 to 60 months with SAM were included and divided in 2 groups. Group A children received vitamin B12 for 6 weeks additionally as compared with Group B. Both groups were followed up at discharge and at 6 weeks for hematological and anthrop

Hippophae rhamnoides: Way to Ameliorate Depressive Augury by Cyanocobalamin.

INTRODUCTION: Vitamins are essential for maintaining wellness since they are involved in several distinct physiological functions. In addition to being necessary for the methylation cycle and the creation of monoamine oxidase, vitamin B complex is also required for deoxyribonucleic acid synthesis, phospholipid preservation, and repair. Vitamin B deficiency or excess may affect dementia, cognitive decline, and memory. Deficits in these vitamins, particularly B12 (cobalamin, or vitamin B12), are therefore strongly linked to depression. Cyanocobalamin is used to assist in managing deficiencies, a

Ameliorative Effect of Beetroot Against Folic Acid Deficiency: A Review.

A lack of vegetables or other folate-rich foods in the diet leads to folate insufficiency. The most significant cause of this malformation may be a lack of folic acid. Folic acid deficiency, a critical maternal health component, can result in megaloblastic anemia, neural tube anomalies, cardiovascular complications, cancer, and Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) imbalance. Beetroot (Beta vulgaris) is one of the most widely consumed vegetables worldwide. Red beets have attracted more attention because of their rich source of bioactive substances, including betalain, indolent nitrates, polyphenols, and

Folate and global health umbrella review series, part 1: methodological framework and syntheses on anaemia and neural tube defects.

BACKGROUND: Folate is essential for normal growth and in human health throughout the lifecycle. Clinical deficiency of folate impairs DNA synthesis and results in megaloblastic anaemia, while suboptimal folate status before and in early pregnancy results in an elevated risk of neural tube defects (NTD). The evidence on the association of folate status with other health outcomes is largely fragmented and understudied. We conducted a series of umbrella reviews examining the association between folate and multiple health outcomes in various populations and settings. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE,

Persistent Anemia Revealing Underlying B-cell Malignancies: A Report of Two Cases Highlighting a Diagnostic Gap in Primary Care.

Persistent anemia in older adults is commonly attributed to nutritional deficiency, chronic disease, or age-related change, particularly when routine laboratory investigations are unrevealing. However, plasma cell and lymphoplasmacytic disorders may present subtly, with anemia as the only consistent abnormality. We report two cases in which extended laboratory evaluation led to early identification of clinically significant B-cell malignancies. The first case involved a man in his early 70s with stable, asymptomatic normocytic anemia despite normal iron studies, vitamin B12 and folate levels,

Milk and honey: how skin changes reveal the deeper dangers of nutritional deficiencies.

INTRODUCTION: The wide-reaching consequences of a restrictive diet are often underestimated or poorly recognized both by the public and many physicians. Deficiency symptoms may go unnoticed leading to unnecessary investigations and ineffective treatments, and a delay in a simple and directed treatment: suppletion of the missing nutrients. CASE PRESENTATION: This case-report describes a 68-year-old man in a high-income country who presented with a 3-week history of painful, indurated edema of the lower legs, immobility due to pain, and dyspnea. Optimizing diagnostic thresholds of total vitamin B12 (B12) for identifying cobalamin deficiency in adults with macrocytic anemia.

OBJECTIVES: Identifying individuals with vitamin B12 (B12) deficiency is challenging due to poor harmonization across total B12 assays. To establish clinically meaningful thresholds for the Roche assay, we characterized B12 concentrations associated with deficiency by comparing individuals with macrocytic anemia and other anemia subtypes or no anemia. METHODS: We retrospectively analysed 10 years of laboratory data from adults tested for total B12 and folate (Roche Cobas), homocysteine (Abbott Architect), and haematological parameters (Sysmex XE/XN). Individuals receiving vitamin supplementat

Nutritional adequacy of the EAT-Lancet diet: a Swedish population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The EAT-Lancet planetary health diet emphasises plant-based foods while including moderate amounts of animal-sourced foods. Simulation-based modelling studies suggest that the diet can provide adequate micronutrients, but concerns remain about potential deficiencies as studies have used different methodologies and few have assessed nutrient intakes using both dietary and biomarker data in population-based studies. This study aimed to evaluate nutrient adequacy, defined as the ability of a diet to provide sufficient essential vitamins and minerals to meet physiological requirements,

Unusual Micronutrient Deficiencies as Causes of Anemia.

Anemia due to micronutrient deficiencies has received little attention in public health and modern-day clinical practice. Increasing numbers of persons, mainly in low- and middle-income nations, are faced with malnutrition and malabsorption syndromes, giving rise to various micronutrient deficiencies that can lead to anemias refractory to treatment with iron, folate or vitamin B12. Though relatively uncommon, such underlying nutrient deficiencies may be difficult to recognize as they can coexist with more common causes and there may be few or no specific clinical characteristics pinpointing a

A Rare Case of Reversible Pulmonary Hypertension Phenotype in a Child with Scurvy: Aetiologies Insights.

Background and Clinical Significance: Scurvy, caused by chronic vitamin C deficiency, is re-emerging in Western countries, particularly among pediatric patients with highly selective diets. While its musculoskeletal and mucocutaneous manifestations are well-known, its association with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is rare and poorly understood. Ascorbic acid and iron are essential cofactors for prolyl hydroxylases (PHD), which regulate Hypoxia-Inducible Factors. Their combined deficiency may trigger a "pseudohypoxic" state, leading to pulmonary vascular remodeling and vasoconstriction.

Vitamin B12 Deficiency Does Not Induce Homocysteine Increase in Transfusion-Dependent β-Thalassemia Major Patients Receiving Folic Acid Supplementation.

Vitamin B12 deficiency is a frequent but underdiagnosed complication in patients with transfusion-dependent β-thalassemia. Folic acid supplementation, commonly prescribed in this population, may mask hematological signs and alter homocysteine metabolism, complicating diagnosis. We conducted a cross-sectional study of 80 patients with transfusion-dependent β-thalassemia receiving daily folic acid supplementation (1 mg). Fasting serum vitamin B12 and plasma homocysteine levels were measured, and the correlation between B12 status and homocysteine was analyzed. Nineteen patients (23.8%) had bioch

Beyond iron deficiency: A comprehensive national survey of anaemia etiology in Sri Lankan young adults.

Previous studies in Sri Lanka have explored the prevalence and causes of anaemia, mainly emphasizing iron deficiency while overlooking other important factors such as enzymopathies, membranopathies, and haemoglobinopathies. Moreover, many studies reported unexplained cases of anaemia even after detailed evaluation. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and underlying causes of anaemia among community-based young adults in Sri Lanka. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted from January 2023 to December 2024 among young adults aged 18-30 years. Data and blood samples were collec

Incidental Detection of Glutamate Formiminotransferase Deficiency Through Newborn Screening in a Clinically Asymptomatic Infant: Molecular Findings and Counseling Considerations.

We report a seven-week-old male infant, born to consanguineous (double cousin) parents, incidentally through routine newborn screening, following an abnormal acylcarnitine profile caused by elevated formiminoglutamate (FIGLU), with subsequent biochemical confirmation of glutamate formiminotransferase cyclodeaminase (FTCD) deficiency. The infant was born at 37 weeks' gestation via spontaneous vaginal delivery, was vigorous at birth, and required no resuscitation. He remained clinically asymptomatic at the time of metabolic and genetic evaluation. Plasma acylcarnitine analysis demonstrated eleva
