Risk analysis of air pollutants and types of anemia: a UK Biobank prospective cohort study.

Previous studies have suggested that exposure to air pollutants may be associated with specific blood indicators or anemia in certain populations. However, there is insufficient epidemiological data and prospective evidence to evaluate the relationship between environmental air pollution and specific types of anemia. We conducted a large-scale prospective cohort study based on the UK Biobank. Annual average concentrations of NO2, PM2.5, PM2.5-10, and PM10 were obtained from the ESCAPE study using the Land Use Regression (LUR) model. The association between atmospheric pollutants and different

Apparent amylose content positively influences the quality of extruded fortified rice kernels.

The present research studies the impact of apparent amylose content (AAC) on the quality of fortified rice kernels (FRK), a health food designed to combat iron deficiency anemia by fortifying with iron, folic acid, and vitamin B12. Five FRK formulations with varying AAC (0.46-23.89 %) were prepared, and AAC influence on the extruder-system parameter and physicochemical, cooking, and textural properties of FRK was investigated. The torque, die-pressure, length, redness, and cooking time increased with an increase in AAC and were in the range of 12.55-22.81 Nm, 58.31-88.96 bar, 4.58-5.09 mm, 0.3

Possible hemoglobin enhancing effect of phytol in methotrexate-induced folate deficient Swiss albino mice: In vivo and in silico studies.

The diterpenoid phytol is evidently acting against anemia in experimental animals. However, the molecular mechanisms behind this issue are yet to be discovered. This study aimed to evaluate phytol's effect on methotrexate-induced folate-deficient animals through in vivo and in silico studies. For this, a total of thirty adult male Swiss albino mice were randomly divided into six different groups, namely the normal control (vehicle), the negative control (folate deficiency inducer, methotrexate 3 mg/kg), the standard (folic acid 1.5 mg/kg), two test groups comprising phytol 25 and 50 mg/kg,

Vitamin B12 Deficiency Manifesting As Pancytopenia, Lymphadenopathy, and Fever: A Clinical Mimic of Hematologic Malignancies.

Pancytopenia is a complex medical condition characterized by decreased levels of red blood cells (RBCs), white blood cells (WBCs), and platelets (PLTs). It can arise from impaired production, peripheral destruction, or a combination of both. The causes of pancytopenia range from reversible factors like infections and medication reactions to irreversible conditions. Vitamin B12 deficiency is a notable reversible cause that can take years to manifest in adults due to stored reserves. However, deficiencies caused by impaired absorption, especially due to the lack of intrinsic factors (IFs), can l

A Rare Case of Severe Folate Deficiency-Induced Pancytopenia.

Chronic alcoholism is a well-documented cause of folate deficiency, with past studies revealing high prevalence rates among alcoholics. Despite mandatory folate fortification in the UK from 2021, individuals with chronic alcohol consumption remain susceptible to severe folate deficiencies. This case study explores the hematological impact of severe folate deficiency in a 38-year-old female chronic alcoholic who presented with pancytopenia. The patient's symptoms included cough, shortness of breath, lethargy, reduced appetite, constipation, and rectal bleeding. Her medical history included poly

Red Cell Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency With Hypertriglyceridemia: A Case Report.

Red cell pyruvate kinase (PK) deficiency is a genetic disorder affecting the enzyme PK in red blood cells. A deficiency in PK leads to hemolytic anemia. Hypertriglyceridemia means elevated levels of triglycerides in the blood. The hypertriglyceridemia disorder can be primary or secondary to an underlying disease. Hypertriglyceridemia with β-thalassemia major is a known association and is called hypertriglyceridemia-thalassemia syndrome. A four-month-old male child was found to have milky serum. On investigation, there was severe anemia, with triglycerides at 1197 mg/dL and high lactate dehydro

A Spongy Appetite: A Case of Pica.

Pica is an eating disorder defined as the compulsive and repeated ingestion of substances that have no nutritional value for at least one month. This condition may be hard to diagnose without complications, as a high degree of suspicion is needed. The subject in this case was a teenager who presented with asthenia and unspecific abdominal pain. The etiological workup showed no abnormalities other than mild anemia and iron and folate deficiencies. After a thorough anamnesis, the patient's mother mentioned sporadic ingestion of synthetic mattress foam since childhood, which had become more frequ

A Study of the Prevalence of Anemia in Children With Severe Acute Malnutrition at a Pediatric Tertiary Care Hospital in South India.

Introduction In developing countries such as India, severe acute malnutrition (SAM) has been a cause for great concern in the pediatric population. SAM is associated with significant morbidity and mortality in children less than 60 months of age and leaves them vulnerable to diseases due to a decrease in immunological response. Children with SAM are prone to infections, and due to nutritional deficiency, many have anemia which may be a direct or indirect cause of morbidity and mortality. They are affected by frequent respiratory and gastrointestinal infections. Methodology A cross-sectional st

Thiamine-Responsive Megaloblastic Anemia Syndrome Mimicking Myelodysplastic Neoplasm.

INTRODUCTION: Thiamine-responsive megaloblastic anemia syndrome (TRMA) is a rare autosomal recessive disease with a homozygous or compound-heterozygous mutation in the SLC19A2 gene characterized by megaloblastic anemia, diabetes mellitus (DM), and sensorineural hearing loss with onset in childhood. Folic acid and vitamin B12 in serum are normal with dysplastic erythropoiesis in the bone marrow often mimicking myelodysplastic neoplasms (MDS) as a potential differential diagnosis. Thiamine substitution leads to normalization of anemia, without effects on hearing loss or DM. CASE PRESENTATION: W

Comparing Holotranscobalamin and Total Vitamin B12 in Diagnosing Vitamin B12 Deficiency in Megaloblastic Anemia Patients.

Background Megaloblastic anemia is characterized by abnormally large red blood cells caused by a deficiency in either vitamin B12 or folic acid, both of which are essential for DNA synthesis. Vitamin B12 insufficiency can lead to severe neurological damage, making early identification of vitamin B12 deficiency crucial to prevent irreversible harm. Vitamin B12 deficiency results in decreased levels of holotranscobalamin (Holo-TC) and increased levels of methylmalonic acid (MMA). Methylmalonic acid is considered the gold standard for diagnosing B12 deficiency because it is a specific marker that

Adherence to and predictors of iron-folate acid supplementation among pregnant women in a pastoral population in Ghana: a community-based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Iron-Folate Acid Supplementation (IFAS) interventions have been recognized globally as key in reducing the burden of anemia among pregnant women. However, adherence to and determinants of IFAS remain indistinct, as it is the main constraint with supplementation therapy, particularly among minority populations. Hence, this study sought to determine the adherence to and predictors of IFAS among nomadic Fulani pregnant women in the West Gonja Municipality of Ghana. METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional design was employed to involve 130 respondents between February to July, 2022

Anemia in Infants and Children: Evaluation and Treatment.

Anemia affects more than 269 million children globally, including 1.2 million children in the United States. Although anemia can present with numerous symptoms, children are most often asymptomatic at the time of diagnosis. Anemia in infants and children most often arises from nutritional iron deficiency but can also be a result of genetic hemoglobin disorders, blood loss, infections, and other diseases. In the United States, newborn screening programs assess for various genetic causes of anemia at birth. The US Preventive Services Task Force notes insufficient evidence to recommend universal

Coexistence of Cold Agglutinin and Cryoglobulin in a Patient With Severe Anemia Following COVID-19 Infection.

We report a case of coexisting cold agglutinin and cryoglobulin in a patient with severe anemia following COVID-19 infection, in whom direct antiglobulin testing revealed C3d positivity and immunoglobulin G negativity. There was no evident hemolytic anemia, thrombosis, or clinically significant IgM monoclonal gammopathy. The anemia improved with folic acid supplementation alone accompanied by a decrease of the cold agglutination titer, and the direct antiglobulin test became negative. Despite continuous positivity for cryoglobulinemia, the patient exhibited no clinical symptoms such as thrombo

An Unusual Case of Hemolytic Anemia: A Case Report.

Vitamin B12 deficiency is a potentially severe condition with clinical manifestations ranging from nonspecific symptoms, such as asthenia and glossitis, to severe hematological problems, including pancytopenia and megaloblastic anemia. One of the rare phenomena associated with this condition is pseudo-thrombotic microangiopathy (pseudo-TMA), which can mimic diseases such as thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), leading to possible misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment. In this article, we present the case of a 62-year-old man with a history of intravenous drug use, untreated hepatitis
