Micronutrient Deficiencies and Nutritional Status in Children with Celiac Disease: A Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Celiac disease (CD) is a systemic autoimmune disorder triggered by gluten ingestion, and the only effective treatment is strict adherence to a gluten-free diet (GFD). Many factors, including limited dietary diversity and poor adherence, are associated with an increased risk of specific micronutrient deficiencies and malnutrition. This study aims to evaluate the relationship between adherence to GFD, celiac antibody levels, micronutrient levels, and nutritional status in children with CD. METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted on 402 children aged 2-18 years with a

Micronutrient Status, Health Implications, and Assessment Aproaches in Older Adults: A Narrative Review of Recent Studies.

As populations age, micronutrient deficiencies increase and are linked to frailty, functional decline, cognitive impairment, anemia, and a higher healthcare burden. This review synthesizes evidence from the past five years on adults ≥65 years, comparing residents of nursing homes/assisted-living facilities with community-dwelling peers. Community-dwelling older adults show high prevalence of deficiencies-particularly vitamin D, calcium, magnesium, folate, and zinc-while vitamin B12 deficiency is less common overall but increases with age due to malabsorption. Institutionalized adults face high

Fish-shaped erythrocytes and pincer cells co-occur in distinct hematological disorders and are associated with anemia severity.

OBJECTIVES: Red blood cell (RBC) morphology in peripheral blood smears (PBS) remains essential for the differential diagnosis of anemia and other hematologic disorders. As yet unclassified poikilocytes, fish-shaped RBCs and pincer (mushroom-shaped) cells are rarely observed but have been described as "bizarre erythrocytes" and linked to hereditary spherocytosis. This study aimed to investigate their relevance across a spectrum of hematologic diseases and provide a basis for future morphological standardization. METHODS: Peripheral blood smears from 251 specimens were systematically reviewed,

Recurrent subcutaneous hemorrhage and leg weakness: A case of scurvy presenting as simple Purpura.

Although uncommon, scurvy can still occur in developed contries and can cause substantial morbidity and be life threatening if untreated. An impoverished 68-year-old woman with a low intake of fruit and vegetables presented with weakness and painful purpura on both legs, having experienced a similar episode 3 years previously. Laboratory tests revealed anemia, coagulopathy, a low folic acid concentration, and serum vitamin C concentration below the limit of detection. She was admitted and treated with transfusions of packed red blood cells and fresh frozen plasma owing to the coagulopathy, and

Haemolytic Anaemia; Beyond Sickle Cell Anaemia: A Case Series of Patients With Paroxysmal Nocturnal Haemoglobinuria in Kenya.

Paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria (PNH) is a rare, acquired clonal haematopoietic stem cell disorder characterised by intravascular haemolysis, thrombosis and bone marrow failure. It results from an acquired somatic mutation in the X-linked phosphatidylinositol glycan Class A (PIGA) gene, leading to deficiency of glycosylphosphatidylinositol-anchored complement regulatory proteins, particularly CD55 and CD59, and uncontrolled complement-mediated haemolysis. Although sickle cell disease is the most prevalent haemolytic anaemia in Kenya, other aetiologies need to be considered. We describe a

Severe Megaloblastic Anemia Secondary to Folate Deficiency in a 2-Year-Old Boy with Prolonged Predominant Goat Milk Feeding: A Case Report from a Low-Resource Setting.

INTRODUCTION: Megaloblastic anemia in young children is a significant but preventable condition, commonly caused by deficiencies in folate or vitamin B12. Prolonged predominant feeding with nutritionally inadequate milk substitutes, such as unfortified goat milk, increases the risk of severe nutritional anemia, particularly in low-resource settings. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 2-year-old Somali boy who presented with a 5-month history of fatigue, recurrent fever, poor appetite, abdominal distension, progressive weight loss, and cough. The child had a history of prolonged predominant goat m

Effect of iron dose in maternal multiple micronutrient supplement on perceived side effects, adherence, acceptability and preferences: protocol for a randomised crossover trial.

INTRODUCTION: Iron-folic acid (IFA) supplementation in pregnancy is recommended by the WHO, with a dose of 60 mg of iron in contexts where anaemia remains a severe public health problem. Iron-containing supplements may cause side effects that affect acceptability and adherence in a dose-response manner. Maternal multiple micronutrient supplements (MMS), which include iron and folic acid plus additional micronutrients, are also recommended in the context of rigorous research, and programmes are considering transitioning from IFA to MMS containing 30 mg of iron. We will evaluate the effect of ir

Severe Combined Vitamin B12 and Folate Deficiency Presenting With Features Suggestive of Hemolytic Anemia in Two Long-Term Proton Pump Inhibitor Users: A Case Report.

Megaloblastic anemia may present with biochemical features suggestive of hemolysis, creating diagnostic uncertainty. We describe two middle-aged women who presented with severe symptomatic macrocytic anemia, markedly elevated lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), undetectable haptoglobin, and low reticulocyte counts. Further investigation confirmed a combined vitamin B12 and folate deficiency. No definitive underlying cause was identified, although long-term proton pump inhibitor (PPI) use was considered a potential contributing factor to vitamin B12 deficiency. Both patients were treated with vitamin

Vitamin B12 supplementation for growth, development, and cognition in children.

RATIONALE: Vitamin B12 deficiency is an important public health problem in children, and has been associated with anaemia and impaired growth, cognition, and development. Vitamin B12 deficiency may develop in children due to lower content in breast milk, low dietary intake, and as requirements increase with age. Vitamin B12 supplementation may confer benefits to child growth and development, due to its role in DNA synthesis and methylation, red blood cell formation, and folate metabolism. However, no systematic reviews have been conducted to examine the effects of vitamin B12 supplementation i

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Iron deficiency (ID) can occur before anemia and may impair performance, recovery, and hematological function, particularly in athletes. Female basketball players may be especially vulnerable due to high training demands and sex-specific iron losses. Therefore, this study aimed to compare nutrient intake and hematological and iron status biomarkers between ID and non-ID female basketball players, and to examine diet-biomarker correlations. METHODS: Twenty-four female basketball players completed the study. Athletes were stratified by ferritin, with ID defined as <30 μg/

How Nutrient Deficiencies Impact the Oral Mucosa and How to Manage Them: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies may impact the oral mucosa even before any other symptoms become clinically obvious. This makes the oral cavity an important site for early detection of nutritional imbalance. Across the literature review, the most documented vitamin is vitamin B12. Other widely reported nutrients are iron, folate, and zinc. Less consistently documented are vitamins A, C, and D. Their correlation with recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS), atrophic glossitis, angular cheilitis, burning mouth symptoms (BMS), mucosal erythema, and oral candidiasis (OC) is bro

Effect of combined probiotic and iron-folic acid supplementation on iron status and gut inflammation markers: a randomized controlled trial among anaemic children.

BACKGROUND: Iron supplementation can negatively affect gut health, while probiotics may improve intestinal iron absorption and gut health. Therefore, combined supplementation of iron and probiotics could be beneficial. METHODS: A placebo-controlled randomised controlled trial was conducted among 248 anaemic (Hb 7-10.9 g/dL) children under 5 years of age. Participants were randomly assigned to receive intervention either with Iron-Folic acid (IFA) syrup (3 mg elemental iron/kg body weight/day) along with probiotic (Lactobacillus plantarum UBLP40, 1010CFU) or control (IFA along with placebo) fo

Vitamin D Supplementation Enhances Hematologic Recovery in Vitamin D-Deficient Adults With Iron Deficiency Anemia.

BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is the most common form of anemia worldwide. Emerging evidence suggests that vitamin D (VD) and micronutrient deficiencies may impair erythropoiesis and iron metabolism. However, clinical data on their combined effects in the Indian population are limited. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the impact of adjunctive VD supplementation alongside iron-containing micronutrient supplements and additional minerals (oral IDA therapy) in VD-sufficient (VD-S) and VD-deficient (VD-D) adults >18 years. METHODS: IDA participants were categorized in Group I (VD-S+Fe,

Facilitators and barriers to implementing national iron and folic acid supplementation programmes for adolescents in India: a protocol for systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Anaemia remains a major public health concern among Indian adolescents, particularly girls. National-level and state-level initiatives led by the Government of India, such as the Weekly Iron and Folic Acid Supplementation, Anaemia Mukt Bharat and the Intensified National Iron Plus Initiative, aim to control iron-deficiency anaemia through systematic supplementation and behaviour change communication strategies. However, implementation challenges persist. Given the limited evidence on barriers, facilitators and interventions implemented to improve the outlined national schemes, we

Adolescent Acceptability of School and Home Micronutrient Supplementation and Nutrition Curriculum in Mozambique.

Iron-deficiency anemia is the most common micronutrient deficiency and a leading cause of disability-adjusted life years among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) globally. Although multiple micronutrient supplementation (MMS) provides a broader range of micronutrients than iron-folic acid supplementation (IFAS) prior to conception, the acceptability of MMS and home-based supplementation strategies remains underexplored. We assessed the acceptability of MMS, IFAS, and a contextualized nutrition curriculum delivered via school clubs in a two-arm cluster-randomized trial across three rural s
