Micronutrient Networks in Nutritional Anemia: A Narrative Review Beyond Pathophysiology, Diagnosis, and Management of Iron Deficiency.

Nutritional anemia remains one of the most persistent global health disorders, affecting populations across all age groups, particularly women, children, and individuals from low- and middle-income countries. Although iron deficiency has traditionally been considered the principal cause of nutritional anemia, emerging data indicate that anemia frequently results from intricate interactions among multi-micronutrient deficiencies, including folate, vitamin B12, vitamin A, zinc, copper, selenium, and antioxidant vitamins. Micronutrients regulate erythropoiesis, iron homeostasis, DNA synthesis, ox

Comparability of serum folate concentration measured by a microbiological method, LC-MS/MS and immunoassay.

BackgroundFolate, vitamin B9, is an essential micronutrient for DNA replication and repair. Deficiency is associated with megaloblastic anaemia and fetal neural tube defects. Serum folate measurement provides a convenient biomarker of folate status in clinical and research settings, including nutritional surveys. The overall aim of this evaluation was to compare serum folate results measured from three different technologies within the same laboratory to determine systematic biases and equivalence between methods.Methods58 serum samples from the UK National Diet and Nutrition Survey were used

Evaluating the Role of School-Based Weekly Iron-Folic Acid Supplementation in Shaping Common Morbidity and Growth Outcomes Among Adolescent Girls: Evidence From a Cluster-Randomized Controlled Trial in Central Ethiopia Region.

Nutritional deficiencies and parasitic infections continue to undermine immune defenses and drive anemia rates among adolescents, creating a significant public health challenge in sub-Saharan Africa. Although multiple factors contribute to this burden, the prevention and treatment of iron deficiency (ID) remain the most critical levers for progress. The longer-term effects of weekly iron-folic acid supplementation (WIFAS) on morbidity symptoms and growth outcomes remain unclear. A cluster randomized controlled trial was implemented within a school setting involving a cohort of 306 adolescent g

Double Burden of Malnutrition Prevalence in Pregnant Women: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The coexistence of undernutrition and overweight, obesity, or diet-related noncommunicable diseases and micronutrient deficiency in pregnant women is defined by the WHO as a double burden of malnutrition (DBM). These coexistences are a critical aspect of maternal and antenatal care, especially in low- and middle-income countries. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the global prevalence of DBM in pregnant women through a systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: The systematic review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA recommendations. Studies that reported prevalence measures o

Knowledge-Attitude-Practice Gap Among Mothers of Under-Five Children With Iron-Deficiency Anemia and the Association of Maternal Knowledge With Hemoglobin Levels: A Cross-Sectional Study at a Rural Tertiary Care Center in Haryana.

BACKGROUND: Anemia is the third leading cause of disability globally, with iron deficiency as the most common nutritional cause. India accounts for nearly half of the global anemia burden in children under five years of age. Given that mothers play a critical role in child care, this study aimed to identify gaps in their knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) regarding anemia prevention. METHOD: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 102 mothers of anemic children aged 6-59 months diagnosed with iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) and presented to a rural tertiary care center

The Possible Hematological Cost of Metabolic Success: Do Incretin-Based Therapies Silently Trigger Anemia?

Diabetes mellitus and obesity represent a growing global health burden with high morbidity and mortality. In the last several years, novel incretin-based therapies have been developed, and their use has risen dramatically. Beyond their proven metabolic, glycemic, cardiovascular, renal, and many other benefits, there are some observational data linking anemia development with their use. From the era of gliptins to retatrutide, in this review we tried to explore whether erythroid suppression is the hidden paradigm of advanced incretin-based therapies. Potential pathophysiological explanations in

Oral iron supplements for children in malaria-endemic areas.

RATIONALE: Iron deficiency anaemia is a common nutritional disorder among children in malaria-endemic regions and is associated with adverse developmental and health outcomes. However, concerns have been raised that iron supplementation might increase the risk of malaria by enhancing parasite growth, particularly in areas lacking adequate malaria prevention and treatment services. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effects and safety of iron supplementation, with or without folic acid, in children living in areas with hyperendemic or holoendemic malaria transmission, where malaria is intense and occ

Independent Association Between Lumbar Intervertebral Disc Degeneration and Fatty Degeneration of Paravertebral Muscles.

Malaria is an infectious disease caused by parasitic protozoans of the genus Plasmodium. Malaria control efforts on a global scale are in danger due to the emergence and spread of drug-resistant malaria. Despite stakeholders' dedication to the prevention and treatment of malaria, the current state of global health does not offer an effective answer to the issue of drug resistance. Furthermore, there is an information gap about the molecular mechanisms of Plasmodium falciparum's drug resistance, which makes it difficult to develop monitoring systems. Most countries lack adequate and comprehensi

Iturin A disrupts Cryptococcus neoformans membrane integrity, attenuates virulence, and synergizes with amphotericin B.

BACKGROUND: Use of the ergot-derived dopamine receptor agonists (cabergoline and pergolide) is associated with an increased risk of cardiac valvulopathy. Pergolide was withdrawn from the US market in 2007 because of the risk of valvular heart disease, while the European Medicines Agency (EMA) required a reduction in the maximum daily dosage of cabergoline and pergolide from 6 mg/day to 3 mg/day in 2008. In Japan, the package inserts of both drugs were revised in April 2007 to request that physicians conduct periodic ultrasonic cardiography (UCG) examinations for patients taking cabergoline or

Piezo1 knockdown alleviates high‑altitude cerebral edema by improving brain microvascular endothelial cell tight junctions via blocking the calcium influx‑mediated Calpain‑1 activity.

BACKGROUND: Since lifestyle changes are main therapies for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), changing dietary components (nutritional or bioactive) may play a parallel important role. Few studies have assessed the effects of curcumin on NAFLD (mainly antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects). We aimed to determine the effects of nano-curcumin (NC) on overweight/obese NAFLD patients by assessing glucose, lipids, inflammation, insulin resistance, and liver function indices, especially through nesfatin. METHODS: This double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial was condu
