OBJECTIVES: Ineffective erythropoiesis, although at a mild degree, could make individuals with beta thalassaemia trait (BTT) vulnerable to folate deficiency. This could be more pronounced in communities where dietary intake of folate is substantially lower. We aimed to assess serum folate levels and dietary folate consumption in individuals with BTT and compare them with healthy matched controls.
DESIGN: A case-control study.
SETTING: This study was conducted between June 2021 and June 2022 at a regional thalassaemia centre in Sri Lanka.
PARTICIPANTS: The study includes 100 sets of samples,

BACKGROUND: The long-term follow-up studies investigating the risk of anemia and iron deficiency following bariatric procedures are scarce. This study aimed to determine the influence of body weight reduction and type of bariatric surgery on iron metabolism parameters.
METHODS: We included 138 consecutive patients who underwent bariatric surgery (120 underwent sleeve gastrectomy and 18 underwent other types of bariatric surgery) between 2010 and 2016. At baseline and at follow-up (median observation: 10 years), examination weight and height were measured, and blood samples for iron metabolism

BACKGROUND: Maternal iron deficiency anemia is a persistent global health challenge with increased risk of adverse perinatal outcomes. Obstetric guidelines advocate for first-line treatment of moderate iron deficiency anemia with twice-daily oral iron; however, rates of iron deficiency anemia in pregnancy remain above global targets and are rising.
OBJECTIVE: Determine whether single-dose intravenous iron for primary treatment of maternal iron deficiency anemia in the second trimester is superior to twice daily oral iron in reducing incidence of low birth weight infants and maternal anemia at

OBJECTIVES: Celiac disease (CeD) requires long-term follow. The role of laboratory testing other than celiac serology during follow up is unclear. We aimed to determine which laboratory tests are required during follow up based on the prevalence of abnormal tests and timing of abnormalities appearance.
METHODS: Retrospective chart-review of children diagnosed with CeD between 1999 and 2018 was conducted. Demographic, clinical and laboratory data were recorded from diagnosis and during follow-up.
RESULTS: The cohort included 500 children with CeD [59.8% females, median(IQR) age at diagnosis 5

Anemia is a frequent complication in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients. The etiology is multifactorial, with iron deficiency and anemia of chronic disease being the main reasons. Other causes include vitamin B12 and folate deficiency, hemolytic anemia and medications such as azathioprine and sulfasalazine. Apart from physical symptoms, it is associated with several negative outcomes, including poor quality of life, increased risk of hospital admission, increased risk of surgery and higher treatment costs. Diagnostic evaluation aims to identify the underlying cause and severity to deter

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization has recommended daily supplementation with iron folic acid, to prevent anemias during pregnancy. However, due to many factors, compliance of pregnant women with this recommendation of iron and folic acid supplementation remains low, both in Africa and Ethiopia. Studies conducted in issue shows setting specific difference regarding determinants of iron and folic acid compliance.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the determinants of iron and folic acid supplementation compliance among antenatal care attendee pregnant women in the Bule Hora district,

Severe haemolytic anaemia is a rare and often overlooked presentation of folic acid deficiency. Here we describe a case of severe haemolytic anaemia secondary to folic acid deficiency in a patient with beta thalassaemia trait. A 20-year-old young woman of Pakistani origin, previously independent and active with no significant past medical history, presented with vertigo, dizziness, tiredness, and muscle stiffness. On admission, she had a haemoglobin level of 23 grams/L, folic acid level <1.3 micrograms/L with evidence of haemolysis. Her peripheral blood film was consistent with severe haematin

BACKGROUND: Few countries have succeeded to decrease the prevalence of anemia in women of reproductive age (WRA), and where improvements have been observed, contributing factors are not well understood.
OBJECTIVES: To synthesize cross-cutting findings from specific exemplar studies in Uganda, Senegal, the Philippines, and Pakistan by reviewing anemia trends, policies, and programs, comparing drivers of change, and proposing strategies to achieve further reductions in WRA anemia.
METHODS: A mixed-methods approach was used for exemplar case studies: 1) descriptive analyses of Demographic and H

Folate (vitamin B9) is an essential nutrient that plays a crucial role in various bodily functions. Its deficiency can lead to health issues, such as megaloblastic anemia, neural tube defects in the developing fetus and increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. Consequently, there is interest in increasing folate content in food crops by classical and molecular breeding. Since folate is a water-soluble vitamin that is sensitive to heat, we chose to manipulate its synthesis pathway in lettuce, which is often used for salads and sandwiches, without heat treatment, which makes it a good vehicle

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Our previous study found that 60 of 588 oral lichen planus (OLP) patients have vitamin B12 deficiency. This study assessed whether the vitamin B12-deficient OLP (B12D/OLP) patients had significantly higher frequencies of anemia, hematinic deficiencies, hyperhomocysteinemia, and serum gastric parietal cell antibody (GPCA) positivity than healthy control subjects and evaluated whether all B12D/OLP patients had pernicious anemia (PA).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The blood hemoglobin (Hb) and serum iron, vitamin B12, folic acid, homocysteine, and GPCA levels in 60 B12D/OLP patients

Iron deficiency (ID) is a top five leading cause of disability-adjusted life-years in women of reproductive age around the world. Despite its enormous health burden, no screening guidelines exist for the detection and treatment of ID in women of reproductive age. We sought to determine the cost-effectiveness of screening versus no screening for ID in women of reproductive age in the United States. A lifetime simulation of women of reproductive age was conducted using a Markov cohort model under three strategies: (1) no screening, (2) screening at a ferritin threshold of 15 μg/L, and (3) screen

Pregnancy is a period characterized by extensive physiological changes in both the mother and fetus. During this period, the nutritional status of the mother has a profound and irreversible impact on her health and the growth and development of the fetus. The fetus depends exclusively on the mother and drives nutrients through the placenta. Therefore, mothers must be provided with a well-balanced diet that is adequate in both macro- and micronutrients. Most pregnant women generally manage to get adequate macronutrients; however, many women fail to get micronutrients up to the recommended dieta

BACKGROUND: Iron-folic acid supplementation is one of the key interventions provided during antenatal care (ANC) services to reduce iron deficiency, maternal anemia, low birthweight and other pregnancy-related complications responsible for maternal and neonatal mortality. However, use of iron-folic acid supplements and adherence with recommended dosage in Nigeria is low. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to examine factors associated with iron-folic acid supplements use among pregnant women in Karu local government area (LGA), Nasarawa, Nigeria.
METHODS: Questionnaires were admini

The patient was a 24-year-old female with pyruvate dehydrogenase complex deficiency and cerebral palsy. At 14 years of age, she developed short bowel syndrome due to intestinal obstruction and began receiving total parenteral nutrition (TPN) at home. At 15 years of age, the patient developed intestinal failure associated with liver disease. At 23 years of age, she rapidly developed jaundice and liver dysfunction. Liver biopsy revealed significant iron deposition, which led to the discontinuation of trace element supplementation. She was referred to our department 10 months after the discontinu

This study investigates whether dietary supplementation with conjugated linoleic acids (CLA) induces anemia in mice. Male Kunming White mice were randomly assigned to two groups: one fed a CLA-supplemented diet and the other a linoleic acid (LA)-supplemented diet as control. Compared with those in LA group, periodic manual erythrocyte counts revealed red blood cells (RBCs) in CLA group significantly reduced on days 47 (p < 0.05), 61 (p < 0.01), and 86 (p < 0.001). Complete blood count (CBC) analysis demonstrated that CLA group exhibited 48.96 % lower RBCs (p < 0.01) and 46.49 % reduced hematoc

BACKGROUND: Antenatal multiple micronutrient supplementation (MMS) has been shown to be more effective than iron-folic acid (IFA) alone in reducing adverse pregnancy and birth outcomes. However, there is a concern that MMS containing 30 mg of iron may be less effective in reducing maternal anemia compared to IFA supplements containing 60 mg of iron. This poses a clinical and programmatic dilemma for countries with a high burden of maternal anemia (> 40% prevalence) where the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends using IFA with 60 mg of iron.
METHODS/DESIGN: We will conduct an individuall

Folate and vitamin B12 (B12) are essential cofactors in folate-mediated one-carbon metabolism (FOCM). FOCM includes a series of methyl transfer reactions for methionine regeneration and de novo synthesis of nucleotides, including thymidylate. Deficiency in either folate or B12 can result in negative health outcomes including megaloblastic anemia, with additional neurocognitive impairments observed as a result of B12 deficiency. While folate deficiency is not common in the United States due to mandatory folic acid fortification, B12 deficiency is observed more frequently, particularly in certai

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can be diagnosed as early as 18 months old, but more reliably after two years. Notably, no laboratory test exists to identify mothers at higher risk of having a child who will later be diagnosed with ASD or to identify at-risk infants before the manifestation of symptoms. One frequently described risk factor for neurodevelopmental disorders is vitamin B12 and folate deficiency, which results in macrocytic anemias.
METHODS: We evaluated whether increased mean corpuscular volume (MCV), an indicator of macrocytic anemias in the mother or child, is assoc

Glucose-6-phosphate isomerase (GPI) deficiency is a rare autosomal recessive enzymopathy that presents with chronic nonspherocytic hemolytic anemia. We report the case of a five-year-old Bahraini girl with a history of neonatal jaundice and recurrent episodes of anemia. A comprehensive diagnostic workup, including peripheral smear, bone marrow examination, and whole-exome sequencing, revealed a homozygous likely pathogenic variant in the GPI gene, confirming the diagnosis of GPI deficiency. The patient was managed with supportive measures including blood transfusions, folic acid, vitamin D sup
