BACKGROUND: Antenatal multiple micronutrient supplementation (MMS) has been shown to be more effective than iron-folic acid (IFA) alone in reducing adverse pregnancy and birth outcomes. However, there is a concern that MMS containing 30 mg of iron may be less effective in reducing maternal anemia compared to IFA supplements containing 60 mg of iron. This poses a clinical and programmatic dilemma for countries with a high burden of maternal anemia (> 40% prevalence) where the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends using IFA with 60 mg of iron.

Folate and vitamin B12 (B12) are essential cofactors in folate-mediated one-carbon metabolism (FOCM). FOCM includes a series of methyl transfer reactions for methionine regeneration and de novo synthesis of nucleotides, including thymidylate. Deficiency in either folate or B12 can result in negative health outcomes including megaloblastic anemia, with additional neurocognitive impairments observed as a result of B12 deficiency. While folate deficiency is not common in the United States due to mandatory folic acid fortification, B12 deficiency is observed more frequently, particularly in certai

BACKGROUND: Dietary shift is necessary for improving public health, mitigating climate change, and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Adaption of climate-friendly diets might prevent chronic diseases and reduce mortality; however, consuming diets with a low climate impact have been suggested to increase risk of some micronutrient deficiencies.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine whether self-reported dietary intake varying in climate impact is associated with nutritional risks and benefits based on both dietary intakes and blood concentrations of micronutrients.
METHODS: In the

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which is responsible for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), has infected > 700 million people and led to > 7 million deaths worldwide. Although COVID-19 primarily affects the lungs, it can also affect the kidneys through various pathways. SARS-CoV-2 affects the kidney via several common mechanisms, such as dysregulation of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2, transmembrane serine protease 2 and tissue proteinase L expression in kidney tissue. People with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and COVID-19 have an increased risk of mortality and

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Nutritional anemia is a widespread public health issue, impacting about one-quarter of the global population (24.3 % in 2021; ∼1.92 billion people). Iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) is the most prevalent form, primarily caused by inadequate dietary intake, poor iron absorption, or increased physiological needs. However, the complexity of nutritional anemia extends beyond iron deficiency, involving other micronutrients such as vitamin B12, folate, zinc, copper, and vitamin A. Additionally, anti-absorptive dietary inhibitors (e.g., phytates, polyphenols, oxalates), chronic infecti

Nutritional deficiencies are prevalent in populations across the world. Fortification of staple foods has been used as an alternative to supplementation to address many deficiencies. One such staple is salt, which has long been fortified with iodine, but more recently with iron, folate, and other micronutrients. Our objective was to determine the effects of fortified salt on nutritional and health outcomes among children, adolescents, and adults. We conducted a systematic review of published and unpublished literature using a pre-defined search strategy. Abstracts and full texts were screened

BACKGROUND: Significant physiological changes occur in adolescence, including the onset of menarche in girls. However, the extent to which menstrual bleeding contributes to anaemia and micronutrient deficiencies remains unclear. This study assesses the prevalence of anaemia and micronutrient deficiencies and examines their association with menarcheal status, menstrual bleeding severity and other factors among adolescent girls in Lebanon.
METHODS: Data were collected as part of a nationally representative cross-sectional study involving 2254 adolescent girls, 10-19 years of age. Household inte

Scurvy is considered rare in developed countries but can occur in patients with a poor diet that lacks vitamin C. Risk factors include, but are not limited to, eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, social isolation and dietary habits, and limited access to vegetables and produce due to low socioeconomic status. We describe a case of a middle-aged man who presented with bilateral thigh pain and inability to stand up or walk, skin rash, and swelling in his ankles. Initially, he thought he "pinched a nerve" during his daily exercise and that this caused his discomfort in his thighs. He was f

INTRODUCTION: Anemia during pregnancy is a significant public health issue globally, especially in developing nations. In India, the prevalence from 33.0% to 89.0%. According to the National Family Health Survey-5, anemia is frequent in all age group and is especially high among pregnant women-at 54.3%. In India, among the causes of maternal deaths anemia is the second leading cause. It contributes significantly to maternal, fetal, and neonatal mortality and morbidity. Therefore, the study evaluates the prevalence and cause of nutritional anemia in pregnancy using biochemical parameter (serum

The Indonesian government has provided iron-folic acid (IFA) supplementation in response to maternal pregnancy iron-deficiency anemia. However, community-based cohorts on IFA's effects on maternal and infant anemia are limited. A mixed-method study design with a primary longitudinal cohort was used to observe the association between IFA and anemia in mothers and infants. Iron-folic acid supplementation was observed throughout pregnancy. Anemia status was based on a single hemoglobin assessment using HemoCue Hb 201 + in the second or third trimester of pregnancy for the mother and at birth for

Vitamin B12 and folate deficiency are reversible causes of megaloblastic anemia. Strict vegetarians are at risk of megaloblastic anemia due to low cobalamin in their diet. Knuckle hyperpigmentation in patients with megaloblastic anemia is due to excess melanin synthesis in skin. Here we present a case of a young vegetarian male with megaloblastic anemia with knuckle hyperpigmentation managed successfully with intravenous followed by oral vitamin b12 and folate supplementation.

INTRODUCTION: Anaemia in the elderly is often difficult to treat with iron supplementation alone as prevalence of anaemia of chronic disease (ACD) alone or mixed with iron-deficiency anaemia (IDA) is high in this age group. Hepcidin remains high in ACD, preventing utilisation of iron for heme synthesis. Vitamin D3 has shown hepcidin suppression activity in both in vitro and in vivo studies. As there is no study assessing the effect of iron-folic acid (IFA) with vitamin D3 on haemoglobin levels in the elderly in India, we want to conduct this study to estimate the impact of supplementation of a

Iron deficiency anemia is a public health problem among adolescents that could be addressed by weekly Iron Folic Acid Supplementation (IFAS). The Ethiopian government piloted weekly IFAS in schools, where its effectiveness depends on compliance. We assessed the determinants of compliance with the weekly IFAS in Ethiopia. A school-based survey was conducted in 506 adolescent girls on weekly IFAS. Compliance was considered when girls reported WIFAS for at least three months without discontinuation. Bivariable and multivariable logistic regression models were modeled, with odds ratios reported. O

Anemia in breastfeeding women is a neglected global health issue with significant implications for maternal and child health. Despite its widespread occurrence and adverse effects, this problem remains largely unknown and overlooked on the global health agenda. Despite efforts to improve health access coverage and provide iron and folic acid supplementation, anemia persists. This underscores the need for a comprehensive approach to address the problem. Urgent action must be taken to prioritize education and awareness campaigns, ensure access to nutritious food, and enhance healthcare services.

Polycythemia vera (PV) is a chronic myeloproliferative disorder characterized by uncontrolled red blood cell production. Megaloblastic anemia is caused by deficiency of cobalamin (vitamin B12) and/or folate (vitamin B9). While B12 deficiency may be caused by insufficient dietary intake or impairment of its utilization, its association with PV is described without exact knowledge of the physiopathology. We herein report the occurrence of megaloblastic anemia due to Vitamin B12 deficiency in an 85-year-old North African woman patient with PV. This case highlights this atypical presentation of PV
