Women's intention and factors associated with duration of use of Iron-folic acid supplement use in Karu, Nasarawa State, Nigeria: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Iron-folic acid supplementation is one of the key interventions provided during antenatal care (ANC) services to reduce iron deficiency, maternal anemia, low birthweight and other pregnancy-related complications responsible for maternal and neonatal mortality. However, use of iron-folic acid supplements and adherence with recommended dosage in Nigeria is low. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to examine factors associated with iron-folic acid supplements use among pregnant women in Karu local government area (LGA), Nasarawa, Nigeria. METHODS: Questionnaires were admini

Assessing the adherence and acceptability to iron and folic acid compared with multiple micronutrient supplements during pregnancy: a cluster-randomized noninferiority trial in Cambodia.

BACKGROUND: The Cambodian Ministry of Health is exploring transitioning from iron and folic acid (IFA) to multiple micronutrient supplements (MMS) during pregnancy and is seeking rigorous evidence to inform this policy change. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to assess the adherence and acceptability of MMS compared with IFA supplementation during pregnancy. METHODS: We conducted an open-label cluster-randomized noninferiority trial across 48 health centers in Cambodia. A total of 1546 healthy pregnant individuals (18-45 y) were recruited at their first antenatal care (ANC) visit (<14 weeks of gestation)

Copper Deficiency Presenting With Bicytopenia During Long-Term Parenteral Nutrition for Short Bowel Syndrome: A Case Report and Literature Review.

The patient was a 24-year-old female with pyruvate dehydrogenase complex deficiency and cerebral palsy. At 14 years of age, she developed short bowel syndrome due to intestinal obstruction and began receiving total parenteral nutrition (TPN) at home. At 15 years of age, the patient developed intestinal failure associated with liver disease. At 23 years of age, she rapidly developed jaundice and liver dysfunction. Liver biopsy revealed significant iron deposition, which led to the discontinuation of trace element supplementation. She was referred to our department 10 months after the discontinu

Dietary supplementation with conjugated linoleic acid induces anemia with combined features of megaloblastic and hemolytic anemia.

This study investigates whether dietary supplementation with conjugated linoleic acids (CLA) induces anemia in mice. Male Kunming White mice were randomly assigned to two groups: one fed a CLA-supplemented diet and the other a linoleic acid (LA)-supplemented diet as control. Compared with those in LA group, periodic manual erythrocyte counts revealed red blood cells (RBCs) in CLA group significantly reduced on days 47 (p < 0.05), 61 (p < 0.01), and 86 (p < 0.001). Complete blood count (CBC) analysis demonstrated that CLA group exhibited 48.96 % lower RBCs (p < 0.01) and 46.49 % reduced hematoc

Multiple micronutrient supplementation for maternal anemia prevention (MMS-MAP): an individually randomized trial of higher-dose iron (60 mg, 45 mg) compared to low-dose iron (30 mg) in multiple micronutrient supplements in pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Antenatal multiple micronutrient supplementation (MMS) has been shown to be more effective than iron-folic acid (IFA) alone in reducing adverse pregnancy and birth outcomes. However, there is a concern that MMS containing 30 mg of iron may be less effective in reducing maternal anemia compared to IFA supplements containing 60 mg of iron. This poses a clinical and programmatic dilemma for countries with a high burden of maternal anemia (> 40% prevalence) where the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends using IFA with 60 mg of iron. METHODS/DESIGN: We will conduct an individuall

New Insights into Folate-Vitamin B12 Interactions.

Folate and vitamin B12 (B12) are essential cofactors in folate-mediated one-carbon metabolism (FOCM). FOCM includes a series of methyl transfer reactions for methionine regeneration and de novo synthesis of nucleotides, including thymidylate. Deficiency in either folate or B12 can result in negative health outcomes including megaloblastic anemia, with additional neurocognitive impairments observed as a result of B12 deficiency. While folate deficiency is not common in the United States due to mandatory folic acid fortification, B12 deficiency is observed more frequently, particularly in certai

Mean Corpuscular Volume and Risk of Autism Spectrum Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can be diagnosed as early as 18 months old, but more reliably after two years. Notably, no laboratory test exists to identify mothers at higher risk of having a child who will later be diagnosed with ASD or to identify at-risk infants before the manifestation of symptoms. One frequently described risk factor for neurodevelopmental disorders is vitamin B12 and folate deficiency, which results in macrocytic anemias. METHODS: We evaluated whether increased mean corpuscular volume (MCV), an indicator of macrocytic anemias in the mother or child, is assoc

Uncovering Glucose-6-Phosphate Isomerase (GPI) Deficiency in a Five-Year-Old With Hemolytic Anemia in Bahrain.

Glucose-6-phosphate isomerase (GPI) deficiency is a rare autosomal recessive enzymopathy that presents with chronic nonspherocytic hemolytic anemia. We report the case of a five-year-old Bahraini girl with a history of neonatal jaundice and recurrent episodes of anemia. A comprehensive diagnostic workup, including peripheral smear, bone marrow examination, and whole-exome sequencing, revealed a homozygous likely pathogenic variant in the GPI gene, confirming the diagnosis of GPI deficiency. The patient was managed with supportive measures including blood transfusions, folic acid, vitamin D sup

Balancing Environmental Sustainability and Nutrition: Dietary Climate Impact in Relation to Micronutrient Intake and Status in a Swedish Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Dietary shift is necessary for improving public health, mitigating climate change, and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Adaption of climate-friendly diets might prevent chronic diseases and reduce mortality; however, consuming diets with a low climate impact have been suggested to increase risk of some micronutrient deficiencies. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine whether self-reported dietary intake varying in climate impact is associated with nutritional risks and benefits based on both dietary intakes and blood concentrations of micronutrients. METHODS: In the

Kidney involvement and anemia in COVID-19 infection.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which is responsible for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), has infected > 700 million people and led to > 7 million deaths worldwide. Although COVID-19 primarily affects the lungs, it can also affect the kidneys through various pathways. SARS-CoV-2 affects the kidney via several common mechanisms, such as dysregulation of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2, transmembrane serine protease 2 and tissue proteinase L expression in kidney tissue. People with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and COVID-19 have an increased risk of mortality and

Demystifying intricate factors of nutritional anemia beyond iron deficiency-A narrative review.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Nutritional anemia is a widespread public health issue, impacting about one-quarter of the global population (24.3 % in 2021; ∼1.92 billion people). Iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) is the most prevalent form, primarily caused by inadequate dietary intake, poor iron absorption, or increased physiological needs. However, the complexity of nutritional anemia extends beyond iron deficiency, involving other micronutrients such as vitamin B12, folate, zinc, copper, and vitamin A. Additionally, anti-absorptive dietary inhibitors (e.g., phytates, polyphenols, oxalates), chronic infecti

Severe Macrocytic Anemia in a Young Alcoholic Male: A Case Report.

Vitamin B12 and folate deficiency can lead to severe macrocytic anemia, apart from other consequences such as central and peripheral neurological symptoms. We report a case of a 23-year-old male presenting with severe pancytopenia, who was treated initially with red blood cell transfusions, intramuscular cyanocobalamin, and oral folate. The patient's laboratory parameters were normal after 50 days of therapy. During the investigation, alcohol use disorder (AUD) was identified and considered to be the cause of the vitamin deficiencies once other etiologies were excluded. While these vitamin def

Uncovering the hidden hunger in translational research for periconceptional folic acid awareness among health care providers.

BACKGROUND: Although healthcare providers (HCPs) know folic acid (FA), many are unaware of its various fetal-maternal-offspring beneficial effects. METHODS: A cross-sectional study (September 2024) was conducted among HCPs using a pretested interviewer-based questionnaire. The total knowledge score was 30. The awareness score was good, average, and low for total scores >20, 11-20, and ≤10, respectively. RESULTS: Out of 300 participants, 96 were excluded because of incomplete responses to the questions marked for outcome assessment. The participants were medical officers (42/206; 20.38%), nur

Possible Link Between Macrocytosis and Hypertriglyceridemia: A Case Report.

Macrocytosis is relatively common and can be due to various etiologies. More common causes include vitamin B12/folate deficiency, liver disease, alcohol use, hypothyroidism, and myelodysplastic syndrome. A work-up often yields the etiology, but in some patients, it remains elusive. We present a case of a 75-year-old female with persistent and unexplained macrocytosis. A work-up for the common causes was unremarkable. However, she had a markedly elevated triglyceride level. This report implies a possible association between hypertriglyceridemia and macrocytosis. Further study is warranted to ex
