Heat-related illnesses encompass a spectrum of disorders resulting from exposure to high temperatures and the body's inability to efficiently dissipate heat. These syndromes range from mild illnesses, such as heat edema, heat rash, and heat cramps, to more concerning manifestations such as exercise-associated collapse, heat exhaustion, and exertional rhabdomyolysis. The most severe and potentially life-threatening heat-related illnesses include exercise collapse associated with sickle cell trait, severe exercise-associated hyponatremia, and heat stroke. Common risk factors of heat-related illn

Uncertainty remains about whether sickle cell trait (SCT) shortens life or predisposes to disease. Therefore, we examined whether SCT carriers had an increased risk of death or diseases linked to SCT. We studied 467 779 general population individuals from the UK Biobank. All had undergone whole-exome sequencing and were observed prospectively for a median of 15 years. Individuals with SCT (n = 1253) were not at an increased risk of all-cause death (hazard ratio [HR], 1.04; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.84-1.29) or cardiovascular death (1.34; 0.90-2.00) or for having myocardial infarction (0.

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is characterized by recurrent vaso-occlusive crises and chronic pain, often requiring multimodal analgesia that frequently includes opioids. Given the risks associated with long-term opioid therapy, there is a growing need for effective non-opioid alternatives. Suzetrigine, a selective NaV1.8 sodium channel inhibitor, represents a novel analgesic approach targeting peripheral nociceptive signaling.
METHODS: We present a case series of three patients with sickle cell-related pain treated with suzetrigine as part of a multimodal pain management strategy. Th

Perinatal and early-life arterial ischemic stroke are important causes of hemiparesis and lifelong neurodevelopmental morbidity. While many cases are considered idiopathic, inherited thrombophilia is increasingly implicated in selected patients. We report an infant who developed right-sided motor impairment recognized at nine months of age. He was born at term after an uncomplicated pregnancy, although the neonatal period was complicated by transient respiratory distress and a small atrial septal defect requiring brief neonatal intensive care admission. Examination demonstrated right spastic h

BACKGROUND: Anemia remains a persistent public health challenge among adolescent girls in India, with states like Gujarat continuing to report a high burden despite ongoing national nutrition and anemia control programs. Regional disparities, particularly across rural and tribal populations, further exacerbate the problem. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of anemia among adolescent girls in Gujarat, India, and examine its sociodemographic, nutritional, behavioral, hematological, and biochemical associated factors.
METHODS: A community-based, multi-centric cross-sectional study was

Sickle cell hemoglobinopathy is not merely a genetic disorder but a deeply embedded socio-cultural phenomenon in the remote regions of Odisha. Drawing on long-term ethnographic fieldwork in Koraput and surrounding districts, this study explores the lived experiences of individuals with sickle cell trait (SCT) and sickle cell disease (SCD), focusing on social discrimination, medical uncertainty, and healthcare accessibility. The findings reveal reluctance toward screening, particularly among unmarried women, due to fears of marital exclusion and family stigma. Misconceptions about SCT, includin

Renal papillary necrosis (RPN) is an uncommon but important cause of hematuria in patients with sickle cell trait. We report a 28-year-old female with sickle cell trait and beta thalassemia who developed recurrent, transfusion-dependent gross hematuria. Despite extensive imaging, endoscopic evaluation, and conservative management, bleeding persisted. Ureteroscopy demonstrated findings consistent with RPN. The patient required intensive multidisciplinary care and 21 units of packed red blood cells. Hematuria ultimately resolved following treatment with oral epsilon-aminocaproic acid. This case

We present a 23-year-old at 35 weeks' gestation with Marfan syndrome (MFS) and sickle cell trait (SCT) with acute Type A aortic dissection (TAAD) requiring concurrent cesarean delivery and aortic repair. Delivery, hemi-arch aortic replacement, and coronary reconstruction were successfully performed. Despite intraoperative complexity and postoperative complications, the patient was managed with fewer ischemic complications compared to previous cases of coincident SCT and aortic repair. This case demonstrates critical principles for managing cardiothoracic emergencies in pregnancy with high-risk

A previously healthy 6-year-old white boy presented emergently after trauma to his right eye. On examination, intraocular pressure (IOP) was 49 mm Hg, and visual acuity was 20/50. He was diagnosed with a 3 mm layering hyphema. Despite medical therapy and lifestyle modifications, the patient's IOP continued to rise, peaking at 77 mm Hg on day 3 after presentation. Given his elevated IOP despite the addition of new topical medications on daily follow-up, the patient was screened for sickle-cell disease to assess for an underlying pathology that could be exacerbating his elevated IOP. After testi

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder with motor and non-motor symptoms. Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) with its rapidly rising ageing population is experiencing a surge in the burden of PD in clinical care. Delayed diagnosis and treatment initiation, coupled with socioeconomic and healthcare barriers, may uniquely contribute to the population of PD with advanced clinical disease in SSA. This study aimed to clinically characterize Ghanaian PD patients, and identify predictors of mid-to-advanced disease.
METHODS: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was c

BACKGROUND: Infectious Pathogens (IP) remain a significant contributor to stillbirths and under-five deaths in resource-limited settings. Children with sickle cell disease (SCD) are susceptible due to weakened immunity, influencing infection outcomes. This sub-study, nested within the Kenya Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS) network, investigated infectious pathogens associated with stillbirths and under-five deaths in Western Kenya, as well as the role of the sickle cell condition.
METHODS: We analysed stillbirths (n = 387) and ≤ 5 child deaths (n = 945) enrolled in

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell trait (SCT) is considered a benign carrier state. Though not associated with vaso-occlusive crises of sickle cell disease (SCD), physiological stress like hypoxia, hypothermia, and sympathetic activation experienced during surgery can lead to sickling in patients with SCT. Some reports suggest that perioperative sickling may lead to thrombosis or flap loss. In the context of microsurgery, SCT is assumed to pose less risk than SCD due to lower hemoglobin S (HbS) levels. This study aims to characterize microsurgical outcomes in patients with SCT.
METHODS: We identified a

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Blood transfusion saves lives, but red cell enzymopathies and hemoglobin variants can reduce red cell survival under oxidative stress. In sub-Saharan Africa, blood donors are not routinely screened for glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency or sickle cell trait (SCT). Evidence on co-inheritance in donors is limited, despite possible harm to vulnerable recipients such as neonates and chronically transfused patients. This study determined the prevalence of G6PD deficiency, SCT, and their co-inheritance among blood donors, and assessed donor awareness and selecte

INTRODUCTION: Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is one of the most prevalent genetic diseases in the world. For women with SCD or those with Sickle Cell Trait (SCT) reproductive choices not only require consideration of genetic inheritance but also the exacerbation of pregnancy induced SCD symptoms and potential birth complications. To explore these issues a qualitative synthesis was conducted incorporating the views of women with SCD or SCT as well as healthcare professionals working with these women in maternity settings.
METHODS: Database searches were performed in MEDLINE, Embase, MIDIRS, CINAHL

This case report describes the successful perioperative anesthetic management of a 60-year-old woman with Mayo Level IV clear cell renal cell carcinoma and sickle cell trait who underwent radical nephrectomy, inferior vena cava thrombectomy, and right atrial thrombus excision under cardiopulmonary bypass. The anesthetic challenges included a large intracardiac mass with a high probability of producing mechanical obstruction across the right ventricular inflow and embolization, risk of massive hemorrhage, and perioperative concerns related to sickle cell trait. Intraoperative transesophageal ec
