Mechanical‑immune feedback regulation in distraction osteogenesis: From mechanotransduction to immune microenvironment remodeling (Review).

BACKGROUND: Prostatic male genital schistosomiasis and prostate cancer co-existence cases are uncommon however, some studies have indicated that schistosomiasis may trigger development of prostate cancer regardless of age. Schistosomiasis is a public health problem in sub-Saharan Africa and may account for some undocumented cases of schistosomiasis prostatic cancer in schistosome endemic rural communities. It is against this background that we investigated the association between schistosomiasis and risk of prostate cancer development in residents of Murehwa Community, a schistosomiasis endemi

ΔNp63α‑mediated regulation of tumor‑associated genes and pathways in hepatocellular carcinoma progression.

An understanding of the neural control of lower oesophageal sphincter (LOS) relaxation is clinically relevant because transient LOS relaxations (TLOSRs) are a mechanism of acid reflux into the oesophagus. Preganglionic motor neurones innervating the LOS are localized in the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus (DMV). Based on a single study in cats, it is now widely accepted that these neurones are functionally organized into two separate populations, such that stimulation of the caudal and rostral DMV evokes LOS relaxation and contraction, respectively. Our goal was to map the functional LOS res

Genomic characterization of Listeria monocytogenes isolated from small ruminants in integrated crop-livestock systems.

Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes), a foodborne pathogen shed by asymptomatic ruminants, poses a contamination risks in integrated crop-livestock systems (ICLS), where ruminants are introduced to graze cover crops prior to replanting fresh produce in a field. As a follow-up study, we conducted whole genome sequencing of 30 L. monocytogenes isolates obtained from sheep and goat fecal and soil samples collected during our previously published ICLS field trial studies (2019-2022) at organic farms in California and Minnesota. One goat fecal isolate was genetically identical to one soil isol

A pbpB1 mutation causing reduced β-lactam susceptibility in clinical Listeria monocytogenes isolates.

Listeriosis is a severe foodborne infection and associated with high mortality. Treatment is based on ampicillin, amoxicillin or penicillin, often combined with gentamicin, but meropenem is also used occasionally. β-lactam resistant Listeria monocytogenes isolates are infrequently described but the mechanism of resistance is not known. A clinical L. monocytogenes isolate with reduced β-lactam susceptibility was collected from a German listeriosis patient. Resistance profiling, whole genome sequencing, comparative genomics and genetic experiments were used to identify the causative DNA polymorp

A rising threat: Emergence of Listeria monocytogenes infection from hilly terrain of North India.

Listeria monocytogenes is a foodborne pathogen capable of causing severe invasive infections, particularly meningitis, in neonates, immunocompromised individuals, and pregnant women. This report represents a neonate with multiple complications including meningitis. This case underscores the diagnostic difficulties and therapeutic challenges posed by L. monocytogenes, especially in high-risk populations. Early recognition, timely antimicrobial therapy, and close long-term follow-up are critical for improving outcomes in affected patients and minimizing the risk of neurological sequelae or fatal

Automated high-throughput microscopy screening unveiled new Listeria monocytogenes genes involved in cell infection.

To uncover novel genetic factors required for Listeria monocytogenes cell infection, we developed an automated high-throughput microscopy screening pipeline that integrates GFP-expressing bacteria with machine learning-based image analysis. Using this approach, we screened a mariner transposon library comprising 4224 L. monocytogenes EGDe mutants and identified 58 with significantly reduced numbers of intracellular bacteria. Sequencing revealed 24 unique insertion sites corresponding to 14 genes, including previously known virulence factors and nine novel candidates not previously implicated i

Evolved populations of Listeria monocytogenes related to biofilm formation and biocide stress in the context of food production environment niches.

Cleaning and disinfection of food production environments (FPE) are fundamental components of food safety programmes designed to control microbial pathogens and prevent food contamination. Yet, FPE can still harbour foodborne pathogens, including Listeria monocytogenes, a significant concern to food manufacturers and health authorities due to the high mortality rate associated with invasive listeriosis. Mechanisms contributing to L. monocytogenes persistence in FPE include biofilm formation and reduced susceptibility to biocides, such as benzalkonium chloride (BC), for which several mechanisms

Protective role of the gut microbiota against Listeria monocytogenes: From colonization resistance to therapeutic approaches.

Listeria monocytogenes (LM) is a significant foodborne pathogen with considerable resilience in diverse environments. Following ingestion via contaminated food, LM can breach the intestinal barrier and infect target organs, causing systemic infection. This breach represents a critical step in its pathogenesis. The gut microbiota, a key component of intestinal defense, can restrict the colonization and invasion of the pathogen through mechanisms such as nutrient competition and bacteriocin production. In response, LM has evolved counterstrategies to enhance its survival and invasiveness in the

Dietary antigens drive the generation of functional cytotoxic intraepithelial lymphocytes for early defense against foodborne pathogens.

INTRODUCTION: Intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs) constitute the largest lymphocyte population in the body and exhibit direct cytotoxic effector functions. Despite their abundance and importance in mucosal immunity, the mechanisms governing the generation and maintenance of functional IELs remain incompletely understood. Given the predominance of dietary components in the small intestine, dietary antigens may play a critical role in regulating the generation, maintenance, and functional maturation of IELs. METHODS: To assess the relative contributions of gut microbiota and dietary antigens to

A cross-sectional study on clinical vigilance in the diagnosis and treatment of listeriosis among pregnant women and their knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding listeriosis in Gansu Province, China.

BACKGROUND: Listeriosis is a serious foodborne disease that threatens the health of pregnant women and their fetuses. Gansu Province, in northwest China, is economically underdeveloped and covers a large geographic area. No population-based studies on listeriosis have been conducted there. In 2022, Gansu added listeriosis to its foodborne disease surveillance system and started a pilot program at five tertiary hospitals in four cities. By the end of 2024, 13 confirmed cases had been reported, including three linked to pregnancy: one miscarriage and two preterm births at 27 weeks and 34 weeks p

Rapid Raman Fingerprinting Identification of Listeria monocytogenes via Immunomagnetic Enrichment Coupled with Droplet-Shrinkage-Assisted SERS.

Rapid identification of Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes) is critical to preventing outbreaks of foodborne listeriosis. Conventional methods required immunoassay or nucleic acid sequence recognition for indirect/labeled detection or identification of L. monocytogenes, separately. Herein, a facile label-free fingerprinting method was developed for direct identification of L. monocytogenes using immunomagnetic enrichment coupled with droplet-shrinkage-assisted surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). Immunomagnetic beads were used for specific enrichment of L. monocytogenes from the c

Evaluating the Performance of Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification for the Detection of Listeria monocytogenes Biofilms on Stainless Steel Surfaces.

L. monocytogenes is the causative agent of human listeriosis, a deadly disease with fatality rates up to 20%. L. monocytogenes has the ability to grow under harsh environmental conditions. It can form biofilms in food industries, making it capable of persisting in facilities. Given this scenario, it is of utmost importance to rapidly detect this bacterium not only in foods but also on food-contact surfaces. For the successful outcome of any given detection technology, it is imperative to properly process the samples. In the present work, PBS, LPT, and LPT-Pronase were compared to determine whi
