INTRODUCTION: Listeria monocytogenes is a known food-borne risk associated with ready-to-eat (RTE) foods, including fish. An estimated 90% of cases of invasive human listeriosis result from ingestion of foods containing >2.0 × 103 CFU/g, with growth after purchase being a significant factor. This study aimed to evaluate the biological characteristics, lytic spectra, and determine the biocontrol potential of a strictly lytic L. monocytogenes bacteriophage A511 in comparison with a commercial phage PGL (P100) on raw Scottish salmon fillets.
METHODOLOGY: The lytic spectra of phage A511 and the c

Foodborne listeriosis can cause stillbirth in pregnant individuals, prompting numerous population-specific food safety guidelines. Dose-response models are employed in quantitative microbial risk assessments (QMRAs) to develop such guidelines; however, pregnant hosts are under-considered when developing dose-response models, and the few published dose-response models for pregnant hosts do not consider the biological plausibility of the model. Therefore, this study aims to develop biologically plausible dose-response models for pregnant hosts using infection and stillbirth as health outcomes. T

Listeria monocytogenes remains a major challenge in the food industry. However, data on its genetic variability and the gene markers associated with persistence in food production environments are still limited. To expand current knowledge on the diversity and persistence of L. monocytogenes in the cheese production chain, 194 isolates collected over a 24-year period from 50 cheese processing facilities in Switzerland were characterized using WGS-based analyses. The isolates were classified into 23 different clonal complexes (CCs) with CC3, CC1 and CC101 being the most prevalent. Notably, 7 is

Listeria monocytogenes is a rare but serious illness, especially in the immunocompromised patient. It causes invasive infection, such as bacteremia and meningitis with insidious presentation and high mortality without treatment. A cluster of six Listeria monocytogenes bacteremia was noted within 10 months at a tertiary care referral center. Patients were 27-72 years old; four also had concomitant immunosuppressive diseases, including chronic renal disease, diabetes mellitus, and cancer. All the infections were confirmed on blood culture performed with the VITEK 2 system. The organisms were all

Listeria monocytogenes is a common bacterial pathogen causing listeriosis. Phage-based products are increasingly used in food safety, but their use raises concerns about the emergence of phage-resistant bacteria. The broad-host-range phage P100 is applied in foods, however, little is known about the genetic basis of resistance and associated fitness trade-offs in L. monocytogenes. In this study, recently (2014-2020) circulating, clinical and food-associated L. monocytogenes strains (n = 14) were exposed to a commercial P100 phage preparation in soft agar at 20 °C and 10 °C. Eight mutants were

Foodborne disease outbreaks, particularly those associated with antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) bacterial pathogens, have become an issue of severe public health concern owing to increased globalisation and active food trade among countries. These disease outbreaks include listeriosis, which can cause notable complications such as diarrhoea, headaches, and vomiting. The data generated during the South African foodborne outbreak caused by AMR Listeria monocytogenes led to the inclusion of listeriosis on the South African list of mandatory notifiable medical conditions. Prospective solution to man

Severe infection caused by L. monocytogenes in humans is primarily linked to the pathogen's ability to cross the intestinal barrier and disseminate within the host. Once internalized, L. monocytogenes exhibits intracellular motility that enables colonization of secondary target organs, including the brain and placenta. This review aims to critically compare the infection pathways of L. monocytogenes in humans and ruminant hosts, highlighting the molecular mechanisms that enable bacterial survival, organ tropism, and adaptation to host-specific stressors. By focusing on these comparative pathwa

Although one of the biggest listeriosis outbreaks was reported in South Africa, due to a ready-to-eat (RTE) meat product, to date, very few data on L. monocytogenes in foods and food environments are available from other African countries. The aims of this study were to document L. monocytogenes presence in RTE products and food environments from Namibia, Sudan, and Zambia, provide isolates' genomic characterization, and evaluate genomic similarity using data available at the Italian National Reference Laboratory for L. monocytogenes database. A total of 768 samples, including RTE meat product

This study determined the antimicrobial resistance profiles of L. monocytogenes and other Listeria spp. isolated from beef and beef products sold in retail outlets across Mpumalanga province, South Africa. A total of 153 isolates were obtained from 30 retail outlets. Standard bacteriological methods and PCR were used for isolation and confirmation, and disc diffusion was used to assess resistance to 16 antimicrobials. All isolates showed resistance to at least one antimicrobial, with MDR observed in 51.5% of L. monocytogenes and 47.5% of Listeria spp. All 33 isolates of L. monocytogenes were s

Listeria monocytogenes (LM) is a major foodborne pathogen causing illnesses ranging from gastroenteritis to severe systemic infections. The key virulence factors include bacterial motility, hemolysin and lecithinase production, and invasion of host tissues. This study investigated the anti-virulence effects of cannabidiol (CBD), the main non-psychoactive compound in Cannabis sativa, against LM. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC, 2289 μM; 719.8 µg/mL) and sub-inhibitory concentration (SIC, 11.92 μM; 3.75 µg/mL) of CBD were determined for LM strains Scott A and ATCC 19115. Cultures were

Listeria monocytogenes is an important bacterial pathogen transmitted through milk and dairy products. This study that aimed to detect L. monocytogenes contamination of raw milk using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is the first PCR-based detection of L. monocytogenes from raw milk in Ogun and Oyo States. Twenty-six bovine milk samples were collected for analysis. L. monocytogenes isolation, molecular identification, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and plasmid detection were done using standard bacteriological, Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion, and molecular methods, respectively. In the food-borne pathogen Listeria monocytogenes, SigB is the central regulator of general stress response (GSR) and it mediates host entry by promoting acid resistance and epithelial cell attachment. However, mutations can readily arise to disable regulators of SigB (Rsb proteins), which suggests a considerable genetic plasticity in the GSR. To further investigate this, we defined the complete genome sequence of a clinical isolate and elucidated how sequential mutations within sigB operon (rsbX N77K and rsbU Q317*) impacted fitness through modulation of SigB activity. To investigate the plas

BACKGROUND: The hippocampal formation is indispensable to convert short-term into long-term memories. It is a brain region particularly vulnerable to a variety of noxious stimuli. Severe hippocampal injury with complete inability to convert short-term into long-term memories is very rare in bacterial meningitis.
CASE PRESENTATION: At the age of 62 years, a white German female teacher acquired Listeria monocytogenes meningitis after the consumption of goat cheese manufactured from raw milk. Malabsorptive hydrocephalus required placement of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt. The further course becam

Listeria monocytogenes is a facultative intracellular pathogen capable of direct intercellular transmission, enabling it to evade extracellular immune defenses and modulate host–pathogen interactions. This study examined the temporal and tissue-specific expression patterns of five genes associated with the Janus kinase/signal transducer and activator of transcription (JAK/STAT) signaling pathway in the insect host Tenebrio molitor following L. monocytogenes infection. Post-infection, whole body, gut, and Malpighian tubules were dissected at defined time points to assess differential gene expre

Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes) is a significant zoonotic pathogen responsible for listeriosis, a foodborne infection with high mortality. The inflammasome, an innate immune complex, plays a critical role in controlling pathogenic infections through its rapid inflammatory output. During L. monocytogenes infection, pore-forming toxins such as listeriolysin-O and flagellin are quickly recognized by pattern recognition receptors (PRRs), triggering inflammatory responses and activating the host's anti-infection immunity. However, excessive or chronic inflammasome activation and subsequen

Listeria monocytogenes (Lm), a prototypical intracellular bacterial pathogen, expresses ActA to initiate ARP2/3-mediated actin-based motility in the cytosol of host cells. Motile bacteria generate Lm-containing protrusions at the cell surface, facilitating direct cell-to-cell spread and dissemination within the host. Protrusion formation is an active, spatially regulated process, yet how Lm coordinates bacterial and host factors to orchestrate this process remains unclear. Here, we identify Abelson-interactor 1 (ABI1) as a host factor required for efficient Lm protrusion formation and cell-to-

Ready-to-eat (RTE) fresh salads are widely consumed for their convenience and nutritional value, but they could represent a relevant food safety concern, as they do not undergo a lethal heat treatment before consumption, and furthermore, they may support the growth of Listeria monocytogenes during refrigerated storage. In this study, the growth potential of L. monocytogenes was evaluated by standardised challenge tests in five commercially available RTE salads: crispy lettuce, baby lettuce, a baby lettuce-spicy mustard mix, and two mâche products from different producers. Three different batch

Listeria monocytogenes (LM) is a food-borne pathogen that can cause severe invasive infections, particularly in immunocompromised or elderly patients. Bacterial co-infections are frequently reported in COVID-19 patients, with both COVID-19-induced immune dysregulation and immunosuppressive therapies such as corticosteroids specifically creating risk for more unusual pathogens such as LM. We report a case of a 78-year-old woman with underlying cirrhosis due to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis who presented with fever and weakness, tested positive for COVID-19, and rapidly developed evidence of LM
