Invasive Listeriosis with COVID-19: A Case Report and a Literature Review.

We present the case of a young, immunocompromised woman with invasive listeriosis who initially presented with respiratory symptoms after being diagnosed with COVID-19. She had a 6-day history of nasal discharge, malaise, and headache, with positive COVID-19 PCR results. A blood culture revealed Listeria monocytogenes with an elevated initial cerebrospinal fluid pressure, pleocytosis, and reduced glucose levels. On presentation, she was alert and successfully treated with intravenous ampicillin for three weeks, with no neurological sequelae.

Molecular Dissection of the UvrC Protein Involved in Nucleotide Excision Repair in Listeria monocytogenes.

Nucleotide excision repair (NER) is a conserved DNA repair pathway that removes a wide range of DNA lesions and preserves genome integrity. In bacteria, this process is carried out by the UvrABC excinuclease complex, in which UvrC performs dual incisions flanking the damaged sites. Despite its central role in repair, the biochemical properties and mechanistic features of UvrC from several pathogenic bacteria remain poorly defined. Here, we present a biochemical characterization of UvrC from Listeria monocytogenes (LmUvrC), a major food-borne pathogen. LmUvrC exhibits appreciable DNA-binding ca

Whole-genome sequencing and machine learning reveal candidate genomic features associated with Listeria monocytogenes persistence in two ice cream facilities.

Listeria monocytogenes is a major foodborne pathogen responsible for listeriosis. Ice cream has emerged as an important vehicle for L. monocytogenes transmission, yet genomic data describing strain persistence in ice cream production environments in China remain limited. In this study, we conducted whole-genome sequencing (WGS) of 57 L. monocytogenes isolates recovered from two ice cream production facilities in China between 2016 and 2018 to characterize population structure, persistence, and associated risk factors. Genomic typing revealed dominance of lineage II serotype 1/2a sequence type

Genetic variations and accelerated growth at low temperatures in a Listeria monocytogenes isolate.

UNLABELLED: Listeria monocytogenes contamination of fresh-cut produce poses a threat to consumers due to its high mortality rate in humans. Because it is widespread in the environment, as well as able to grow and survive in harsh conditions, such as low temperatures, it is difficult to control. A strain of L. monocytogenes, L008, with significantly faster growth than other strains, was identified in our laboratory during experiments with fresh-cut produce. The L008 strain had a consistently shorter lag phase and reached maximum spectrophotometric absorbance (optical density) faster than three

Cytosolic CTH senses bacterial lipoproteins and drives noncanonical inflammasome activation.

Pathogen-associated molecules can have both membrane-associated and intracellular receptors. Bacterial lipoproteins are recognized by Toll-like receptor 2, but it is unclear whether they can also be sensed by cytoplasmic receptors. Here we found that bacterial lipoproteins could be recognized in the cytoplasm of macrophages by cystathionine γ-lyase (CTH) and hydrolyzed into lipid chains containing sulfhydryl groups. The hydrolyzed lipid chains form molecules containing four acylated chains linked through disulfide bonds, which further cleave caspase-11 and activate the noncanonical inflammasom

Whole Genome Sequence-Based Surveillance of Human Clinical Listeria monocytogenes Isolates From Switzerland, 2019-2024.

BACKGROUND: Listeria monocytogenes is a foodborne pathogen that poses a significant public health risk due to the high case-fatality rate of listeriosis. Whole genome sequencing (WGS) is critical for identifying outbreak clusters and enables high-resolution characterization of isolates. METHODS: We collected 335 L monocytogenes isolates from human cases of listeriosis occurring in Switzerland between 2019 and 2024. WGS was used to identify disease clusters and characterize the phylogenetic relatedness, virulence profiles, and antimicrobial resistance genes of the isolates. RESULTS: The major

Evaluation of selective enrichment media for accurate most probable number enumeration of Listeria monocytogenes in ready-to-eat seafood products.

Listeria monocytogenes is a foodborne bacterium that can cause listeriosis. Ready-to-eat (RTE) seafood products are among the food categories associated with listeriosis. Because contamination levels of L. monocytogenes in RTE seafood products are often below 10 CFU/g, accurate enumeration of low bacterial concentrations is essential for reliable risk assessment of these products. A most probable number (MPN) method is widely used for enumerating low bacterial concentrations in food samples; however, the choice of selective enrichment medium strongly affects recovery, especially in the presenc

Synergistic Roles of InlA, InlB and LLO in the Infection of Trigeminal Ganglion Neurons by Ovine-Derived Listeria monocytogenes LM90SB2.

Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) is an important zoonotic foodborne pathogen that causes severe rhombencephalitis in ruminants. The trigeminal ganglion is a critical node for Lm invasion of the central nervous system via neural pathways. However, the roles of key virulence factors InlA, InlB, and LLO from ovine-derived Lm in trigeminal ganglion neuron infection remain unclear. In this study, LM90SB2, an ovine-derived Lm strain isolated from a sheep with encephalitis in Xinjiang, China, was used as the wild type, and its ΔInlAB double-gene deletion and ΔInlABO triple-gene deletion mutants were const

High-quality draft genome of the Listeria monocytogenes, one more vaccine strain against livestock listeriosis.

Foodborne listeriosis is one of the severe food-borne diseases affecting both animals and humans worldwide. No vaccine to control listeriosis in humans is available, while a relatively high level of hospitalization (up to 90%) and mortality (up to 20-30%). However, listeriosis is a vaccine-preventable veterinary disease in livestock, which serves as the main reservoirs and the principal source of this infection in humans. Here, we represent the high-quality draft genome of two variants of the second reference Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) strain, routinely attenuated from the ovine virulent Lm s
