INTRODUCTION: The new red blood cell (RBC) parameters such as reticulocyte haemoglobin content and percentage of hypochromic red cells or equivalent, although useful in the laboratory assessment of iron deficiency anaemia (IDA), are confounded by thalassaemia trait (TT). We aim to evaluate the new red cell parameters on the Beckman Coulter DxH800 in distinguishing between IDA and TT.
METHODS: A total of 246 normal subjects, 102 patients with IDA and 115 subjects with TT were accrued for the study. The parameters studied were red blood cell size factor (RSF), low haemoglobin density (LHD%), mi

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate an immunochromatographic (IC) strip assay for Hb Bart's as a routine screening test for α-thalassaemia in area with a high prevalence of thalassaemia and haemoglobinopathies.
METHODS: A total of 300 adult screen positive blood specimens were collected at an ongoing thalassaemia screening programme in northeast Thailand. Routine screening was done using red blood cell indices, osmotic fragility, and dichlorophenolindophenol tests. The IC strip assay for haemoglobin Bart's was performed on all samples. The result was evaluated against thalassaemia genotypes determined usi

We report a live birth from a couple with two genetic diseases, namely: reciprocal translocation carrier and alpha-thalassaemia trait, following pre-implantation genetic diagnostic tests. This is the first case in Hong Kong in which the technique of using one blastomere biopsy for two diseases was established, using array comparative genomic hybridisation and polymerase chain reaction.

Haemoglobinopathies are a leading cause of child mortality worldwide, although with a variable geographical incidence. A reliable estimate of prevalence of the disease is necessary for reducing its burden. However, most studies in India are either hospital based or from certain regions of the country and hence may not realistically reflect the disease burden. The eastern Indian states of Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand and eastern region of Uttar Pradesh, which comprise ~25 % population of the country, are poorly studied with respect to haemoglobinopathies. The present study, conducted on 1,

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of α-thalassaemia in β-thalassaemia individuals in a Chinese population.
METHODS: The standard diagnostic marker for β-thalassaemia was elevation of the Hb A2 level (>3.5%) with low mean corpuscular volume. The common α-thalassaemia mutations were studied by molecular analysis in all identified β-thalassaemia carriers.
RESULTS: A prevalence rate of 3.3% for β-thalassaemia was found in our population; α- and β-thalassaemia interactions were found to co-exist in 17.8% of the β-thalassaemia carriers. The -SEA deletion was the most common α-thalassaemia mut

INTRODUCTION: The coagulation activation in β-thalassaemia is multifactorial and most likely a consequence of the exposure of phosphatidylserine (PS) on RBCs surface. The degree of PS exposure and procoagulant activity of RBCs in β-thalassaemia trait (BTT) subjects carrying common Mediterranean mutations were assessed.
METHODS: Eighty BTT subjects carrying common Mediterranean mutations (β+, n = 53 and β0 , n = 27) and sixty healthy subjects served as controls were studied. Plasma prothrombin fragment 1+2 (F1+2), percentage of PS expression on RBCs membrane, clotting times of modified thrombo

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: In a routine community health survey conducted in adult Adivasis of the costal Maharashtra, microcytosis and hyprochromia were observed in more than 80 per cent of both males and females having normal haemoglobin levels suggesting the possibility of α-thalassaemia in these communities. We conducted a study in Adivasi students in the same region to find out the magnitude of α-thalessaemia.
METHODS: The participants (28 girls and 23 boys) were 14-17 yr old studying in a tribal school. Fasting venous blood samples (5 ml) were subjected to complete blood count (CBC), Hb-H

This study investigated the prevalence of iron-deficiency anaemia, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency and β-thalassaemia trait among Arab migrating nomad children in southern Islamic Republic of Iran. Blood samples were analysed from 134 schoolchildren aged < 18 years (51 males, 83 females). Low serum ferritin (< 12 ng/dL) was present in 17.9% of children (21.7% in females and 11.8% in males). Low haemoglobin (Hb) correlated significantly with a low serum ferritin. Only 1 child had G6PD deficiency. A total of 9.7% of children had HbA2 ≥ 3.5 g/dL, indicating β-thalassaemia trai

BACKGROUND: Hypertensive disorders in pregnancy are responsible for 14% of maternal deaths. Maternal mortality is not only due to medical disorder but also due to underlying social-cultural factors lead to delays in getting timely and appropriate intervention. This study aimed to analyse three delays, to identify socio-cultural, demographic and accessibility factors that contributed to maternal deaths due to hypertension in pregnancy.
METHOD: It was a prospective observational study. Verbal autopsy was done for each maternal death that occurred due to hypertensive disorder. The "3 delay model

AIMS: Classical carriers of β-thalassaemia are identified by a raised HbA2 level. Earlier studies indicated that the Filipino β-deletion has high raised HbA2 levels. The introduction of automated high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for thalassaemia screening is an important advance in technology for haematology laboratories. The BioRad Variant II Hb analyser is a common instrument used to quantify HbA2 levels in thalassaemia screening. This study aimed to determine HbA2 levels in carriers of Filipino β-mutation using the BioRad Variant II Hb analyser.
METHODS: The Filipino β-deletio

BACKGROUND: Neonatal screening for haemoglobin (Hb) disorders is a standard of care in several developed countries with the main objective to detect Hb S. Such practice has not been established in Thailand where α-thalassaemia and haemoglobin E (Hb E) are highly prevalent. Early identification of thalassaemias could be helpful and strengthen the programme for prevention and control for severe thalassaemias.
METHODS: Data from isoelectric focusing (IEF) and Isoscan® for detecting types and amount (%) of each haemoglobin in 350 newborn's dried blood spots were analysed and compared with the com

UNLABELLED: Contaxt: Every year in India 6000 to 8000 children are born with thalassaemia major. The birth of such a child produces considerable physical and economic strain on the affected child, its family and the community at large. Thus, the emphasis must shift from the treatment to the prevention of such births in the future.
AIMS: To find out the prevalence of the Beta Thalassaemia trait among the pregnant women who attended the antenatal clinics in a Primary Health Centre, by using the NESTROF test; to describe the socio-demographic characteristics of the study subjects, to find out th

AIMS: Alpha (α) thalassaemia may be caused by large deletions of the α globin gene(s), or rarely, non-deletional mutations. Both types of mutations may co-exist, and if located on the same allele (α), produce a reproductive risk of hydrops fetalis. We illustrate how clinical-laboratory correlation and accurate α gene sequencing are essential in identifying such patients.
METHOD: Nine asymptomatic patients with -α thalassaemia trait were noted to have significant microcytosis that was insufficiently explained by a single α deletion. Hence α1 and α2 globin gene sequencing were performed, which

The thalassaemias are blood disorders with hereditary transmission. Their distribution is global, with particular incidence in areas affected by malaria. Their diagnosis is mainly based on haematologic and genetic analyses. The aim of this study was to differentiate between persons with the thalassaemia trait and normal subjects by inspecting characteristics of haemochromocytometric data. The paper proposes an original method that is useful in screening activity for thalassaemia classification. A complete working system with a friendly graphical user interface is presented. A unique feature of
