Genetic profiles and hematological characteristics of the α-Hb variant Hb Chumphae (HBA2:c.32T>A) in association with -SEA deletion α0-thalassemia.

OBJECTIVE: Hemoglobin (Hb) variants and thalassemia interactions create complex syndromes, complicating diagnosis. This study aimed to characterize the molecular basis, genetic profile, and potential hematological features of a rare α-hemoglobin variant. METHODS: A 44-year-old Thai male presented with unspecified chronic anemia with hepatosplenomegaly. Hematological data were obtained using a standard automated cell counter. Hemoglobin analysis was performed using high-performance liquid chromatography and capillary electrophoresis. Mutational and globin haplotypes were analyzed using polymer

Acute spinal cord compression in the setting of chronic extramedullary hematopoiesis of the thoracic spine.

BACKGROUND: Though rare, pathologic extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH) can occur in response to myeloproliferative disorders and may present as paravertebral masses. CASE DESCRIPTION: We describe a 63-year-old female with unspecified thalassemia, hemochromatosis, and known asymptomatic extramedullary hematopoiesis of the thoracic spine who acutely developed severe spinal cord compression and a T9 vacuum phenomenon fracture 7 months after her initial diagnosis. OUTCOME: The patient was treated with urgent decompression and T9 kyphoplasty, which resulted in complete resolution of her neurologi

RASopathies are the most common set of monogenic syndromes identified by exome sequencing for nonimmune hydrops fetalis: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

RASopathies are a group of malformation syndromes known to lead to nonimmune hydrops fetalis (NIHF) in severe presentations. Pathogenic variants can be de novo or parentally inherited. Despite being a known frequent presentation, the fraction of monogenic NIHF cases due to RASopathies is limited in the literature. Also, the specific parental contribution of RASopathies to NIHF is not well described. Our objective was to review pooled exome sequencing (ES) diagnostic yield of RASopathies for NIHF and to determine the parental contribution of RASopathy to NIHF. We performed a systematic review o

Gross and radiographic appearance of porotic hyperostosis and cribra orbitalia in thalassemia affected skulls.

Porotic hyperostosis (PH) is the expansion of the cranial diploë, generating 'hair-on-end' appearance on X-rays. This condition is extremely rare and had a prevalence of 0.08%. It is alternatively known as cribra orbitalia (CO) when the orbital roof is affected. In this study, we describe the gross morphology of two skulls affected by PH and CO. The first skull belonged to a 41-year-old female previously diagnosed with beta thalassemia. The skull was affected by excessive PH and CO. The second skull, belonging to a 35-year-old male diagnosed with unspecified thalassemia, showed PH without CO.

Maternal Mirror Syndrome Masquerading as Congestive Heart Failure: A Case Report.

Mirror syndrome is a rare pregnancy complication, life-threatening to mother and fetus. Increasing survival rates of congenital heart disease into reproductive age mean that complications like Mirror syndrome in this population may be more challenging to diagnose, given overlapping signs of edema in cases of heart failure exacerbation. We report a case of a pregnant woman with a history of unspecified congenital heart disease, presenting with swelling and distension, with diagnostic findings not consistent with preeclampsia. Her course was complicated by dyspnea, oliguria, and fetal hydrops. A

Clinical course of dengue in patients with thalassaemia.

BACKGROUND: Dengue and thalassaemia are prevalent in tropical regions. Thalassaemia patients with dengue present with atypical clinical manifestations and may experience more severe disease and complications. AIMS: To investigate the clinical manifestations and outcome in thalassaemia patients with dengue. METHODS: Medical records of thalassaemia patients aged from birth to 18 years with serologically-confirmed dengue who were admitted to Chiang Mai University Hospital, Thailand from January 2005 to December 2010 were reviewed retrospectively. Clinical presentation, laboratory results and ou

Hydrops fetalis in the stillborn: a series from the central region of Thailand.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the cause of hydrops fetalis (HF) among fetal deaths in the central region of Thailand. Autopsy reports diagnosed as HF from 1999 to 2008 at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital were retrieved, and the pathologic findings, clinical information, fetal ultrasonographic studies, and laboratory investigations were reviewed. There were 78 stillborn autopsies during this 10-year period; the mean gestational age was 28 weeks. The causes of fetal hydrops were identified in 88.5%; no cases of immune hydrops were detected. Anemia was the predominant cause of HF (
