Renal papillary necrosis (RPN) is an uncommon but important cause of hematuria in patients with sickle cell trait. We report a 28-year-old female with sickle cell trait and beta thalassemia who developed recurrent, transfusion-dependent gross hematuria. Despite extensive imaging, endoscopic evaluation, and conservative management, bleeding persisted. Ureteroscopy demonstrated findings consistent with RPN. The patient required intensive multidisciplinary care and 21 units of packed red blood cells. Hematuria ultimately resolved following treatment with oral epsilon-aminocaproic acid. This case

We present a 23-year-old at 35 weeks' gestation with Marfan syndrome (MFS) and sickle cell trait (SCT) with acute Type A aortic dissection (TAAD) requiring concurrent cesarean delivery and aortic repair. Delivery, hemi-arch aortic replacement, and coronary reconstruction were successfully performed. Despite intraoperative complexity and postoperative complications, the patient was managed with fewer ischemic complications compared to previous cases of coincident SCT and aortic repair. This case demonstrates critical principles for managing cardiothoracic emergencies in pregnancy with high-risk

A previously healthy 6-year-old white boy presented emergently after trauma to his right eye. On examination, intraocular pressure (IOP) was 49 mm Hg, and visual acuity was 20/50. He was diagnosed with a 3 mm layering hyphema. Despite medical therapy and lifestyle modifications, the patient's IOP continued to rise, peaking at 77 mm Hg on day 3 after presentation. Given his elevated IOP despite the addition of new topical medications on daily follow-up, the patient was screened for sickle-cell disease to assess for an underlying pathology that could be exacerbating his elevated IOP. After testi

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder with motor and non-motor symptoms. Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) with its rapidly rising ageing population is experiencing a surge in the burden of PD in clinical care. Delayed diagnosis and treatment initiation, coupled with socioeconomic and healthcare barriers, may uniquely contribute to the population of PD with advanced clinical disease in SSA. This study aimed to clinically characterize Ghanaian PD patients, and identify predictors of mid-to-advanced disease.
METHODS: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was c

BACKGROUND: Infectious Pathogens (IP) remain a significant contributor to stillbirths and under-five deaths in resource-limited settings. Children with sickle cell disease (SCD) are susceptible due to weakened immunity, influencing infection outcomes. This sub-study, nested within the Kenya Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS) network, investigated infectious pathogens associated with stillbirths and under-five deaths in Western Kenya, as well as the role of the sickle cell condition.
METHODS: We analysed stillbirths (n = 387) and ≤ 5 child deaths (n = 945) enrolled in

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell trait (SCT) is considered a benign carrier state. Though not associated with vaso-occlusive crises of sickle cell disease (SCD), physiological stress like hypoxia, hypothermia, and sympathetic activation experienced during surgery can lead to sickling in patients with SCT. Some reports suggest that perioperative sickling may lead to thrombosis or flap loss. In the context of microsurgery, SCT is assumed to pose less risk than SCD due to lower hemoglobin S (HbS) levels. This study aims to characterize microsurgical outcomes in patients with SCT.
METHODS: We identified a

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Blood transfusion saves lives, but red cell enzymopathies and hemoglobin variants can reduce red cell survival under oxidative stress. In sub-Saharan Africa, blood donors are not routinely screened for glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency or sickle cell trait (SCT). Evidence on co-inheritance in donors is limited, despite possible harm to vulnerable recipients such as neonates and chronically transfused patients. This study determined the prevalence of G6PD deficiency, SCT, and their co-inheritance among blood donors, and assessed donor awareness and selecte

INTRODUCTION: Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is one of the most prevalent genetic diseases in the world. For women with SCD or those with Sickle Cell Trait (SCT) reproductive choices not only require consideration of genetic inheritance but also the exacerbation of pregnancy induced SCD symptoms and potential birth complications. To explore these issues a qualitative synthesis was conducted incorporating the views of women with SCD or SCT as well as healthcare professionals working with these women in maternity settings.
METHODS: Database searches were performed in MEDLINE, Embase, MIDIRS, CINAHL

This case report describes the successful perioperative anesthetic management of a 60-year-old woman with Mayo Level IV clear cell renal cell carcinoma and sickle cell trait who underwent radical nephrectomy, inferior vena cava thrombectomy, and right atrial thrombus excision under cardiopulmonary bypass. The anesthetic challenges included a large intracardiac mass with a high probability of producing mechanical obstruction across the right ventricular inflow and embolization, risk of massive hemorrhage, and perioperative concerns related to sickle cell trait. Intraoperative transesophageal ec

Allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) and autologous hematopoietic stem cell-based gene therapies are potentially curative for sickle cell disease (SCD). Although most patients experience resolution of overt clinical symptoms associated with SCD with donor-dominant myeloid chimerism after undergoing HCT or the induction of a substantial amount of alternative hemoglobin (Hb) after gene therapy (GT), whether the underlying subclinical physiology is normalized in these individuals is unknown. One approach to evaluating the underlying physiology is to characterize the blood rheology

4-HNE carbonylation and phosphorylation in the Zu5-ANK domain have been observed in human erythrocytes with sickle cell trait and G6PD deficiency. However, the atomic-level effects of phosphorylation and multiple carbonylations by 4-HNE on the Zu5-ANK domain are not yet fully understood. The present work provides further insight into understanding the changes caused by polymodifications in Zu5-ANK due to oxidative stress and phosphorylation. Here, we present a molecular dynamics simulation-based study of the polycarbonylated, phosphorylated, and phosphocarbonylated Zu5-ANK domain. Our results

Sickle cell trait (SCT) is often benign but can be associated with occasional hemoglobin sickling, particularly in the setting of physical exertion. Screening for SCT, while controversial, reduces exertional events and death. Exertional sickling (ES) is the presumed and hypothesized etiology of collapse and death in athletes, where sickling, microvascular occlusion, and muscle necrosis result in ischemia, hyperkalemia, arrhythmia, and fulminant rhabdomyolysis. Due to the lack of clarity surrounding ES, the term exercise collapse associated with SCT (ECAST) was developed to describe individuals

Sickle cell disease is caused by the HBB c.20A > T (p.Glu6Val; HbS) variant. Although Cyprus has a long-standing hemoglobinopathy prevention program, current population-specific data on HbS among Turkish Cypriots remain limited. Two hundred unrelated Turkish Cypriot adults were included. The HBB c.20A > T variant was genotyped by PCR-RFLP and confirmed by allele-specific real-time PCR. Genotype distribution was evaluated for Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. No homozygous HbS genotype was detected. Three individuals were heterozygous carriers (AS), corresponding to a carrier frequency of 1.5%. The H

High-degree atrioventricular block in young patients often requires pacing, posing long-term risks. We present a 15-year-old athlete with sickle cell trait and high-degree atrioventricular block managed with cardioneuroablation. Post-cardioneuroablation, atrioventricular conduction normalised, and a nine-month follow-up showed no arrhythmias. This case underscores cardioneuroablation as a promising, less invasive alternative to pacing for young patients, requiring further research.

Haemoglobinopathies are increasingly encountered in low-prevalence countries due to migration, placing greater demands on effective antenatal screening pathways. In Denmark, antenatal haemoglobinopathy screening is offered through general practice to women considered at high risk. We evaluated the implementation of this screening programme in the Capital Region of Denmark during 2022-2023 and estimated the national burden of haemoglobinopathy carriers. Using laboratory data from the Danish Red Blood Cell Centre, we identified women aged 15-40 years who underwent diagnostic haemoglobinopathy te

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic hemoglobinopathy that disproportionately affects individuals of African descent and is associated with elevated risks of maternal complications. However, the contribution of specific SCD genotypes to severe maternal morbidity (SMM) and postpartum readmission remains poorly characterized at the population level.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to examine the association between SCD genotypes-hemoglobin SS (HbSS) disease, hemoglobin SC (HbSC) disease, sickle thalassemia, and sickle cell trait-and SMM, hospital readmission, and related adverse maternal out

RATIONALE: Sickle cell trait (SCT), carried by millions worldwide, is generally considered benign. However, SCT is increasingly linked to life‑threatening complications under environmental stress.
OBJECTIVES: We tested whether sickle cell trait confers heightened vulnerability to oxidant inhalation injury and whether post-exposure haptoglobin mitigates injury.
METHODS: Using humanized SCT (AS) and control hemoglobin (AA) mice carrying human hemoglobin knock‑in genes, we examined physiologic, biochemical, histologic, mitochondrial, and proteomic responses to chlorine (Cl₂) inhalation at conce
