Clinical Presentations and Nosocomial Infections of Neurolisteriosis.

Neurolisteriosis is a listerial invasive disease, which is characterized by brain parenchymal and meningeal involvement, with a high fatality rate and frequent neurological sequelae. The main clinical presentations of neurolisteriosis are meningitis, meningoencephalitis, rhombencephalitis, and brain abscess. Neuroradiological imaging is useful to distinguish these clinical presentations. The diagnosis of neurolisteriosis may be confirmed by cerebrospinal fluid or blood cultures, but these tests may have different yields depending on the clinical presentation of neurolisteriosis. The elderly an

Listerial Meningitis and Brain Abscess With Coexisting COVID-19 Infection in a Young, Immunocompetent Male: A Case Report.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Listeria monocytogenes (LM) is a gram-positive intracellular pathogen that can cause central nervous system infections such as meningitis, meningoencephalitis, rhombencephalitis, or cerebritis. It rarely causes a brain abscess. Listerial meningitis and brain abscess most commonly occur in immunocompromised individuals, neonates, pregnant females, alcoholics, and the elderly. We present a unique case of a young immunocompetent male who presented with listerial meningitis and brain abscess. Coexisting coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection was also present. Since LM was not included in th

Human Listeriosis.

Listeria monocytogenes is a Gram-positive facultative intracellular pathogen that can cause severe invasive infections upon ingestion with contaminated food. Clinically, listerial disease, or listeriosis, most often presents as bacteremia, meningitis or meningoencephalitis, and pregnancy-associated infections manifesting as miscarriage or neonatal sepsis. Invasive listeriosis is life-threatening and a main cause of foodborne illness leading to hospital admissions in Western countries. Sources of contamination can be identified through international surveillance systems for foodborne bacteria a

Listeria Bacteremia Presenting With Cerebral Abscess and Endocarditis in an Elderly Patient With Chronic Immune Thrombocytopenia.

Central nervous system involvement by Listeria monocytogenes usually presents as meningitis, meningoencephalitis or, less frequently, rhombencephalitis. Listerial brain abscesses are rare. Moreover, only 5-8% of listerial bacteremia is complicated by infective endocarditis (IE). A 70-year-old man with chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) presented to our emergency department with acute onset of altered mental status and right-sided weakness. He was afebrile, with no heart murmurs or peripheral IE stigmata. Neurologic examination showed disorientation, expressive aphasia, and right-sided hemip

Supratentorial Listeria monocytogenes Brain Abscess in a Patient with Liver Cirrhosis.

Meningitis and meningoencephalitis account for the majority of central nervous system infections by Listeria monocytogenes (Lm). Macroscopic listerial brain abscess is a rare infection. Early recognition of Listeria brain abscesses represents a major diagnostic challenge. Mortality from Listeria brain abscesses is high but can be reduced when appropriate treatment is timely started. Immunosuppressed patients are more often affected, and a high suspicion is needed for prompt identification. Treatment should be individualized taking into account the comorbidities, lesion size and location, bacte

A case report of sporadic ovine listerial meningoencephalitis in Kosovo.

In 2018, a case of neural disease suspected of listeriosis was reported in a flock of sheep in Kosovo with the death of ewes and 5 lambs. Samples from the brain of only three dead animals were subjected to histopathological and bacteriological analysis. MALDI-TOF MS was applied to confirm suspected Listeria spp. isolates from culture and multiplex PCR was applied for molecular serotyping. All isolates were tested for antimicrobial susceptibility by microdilution broth method. The histopathological analysis of the brain specimens showed typical changes for Listeria monocytogenes. Listeria spp.

Residual Variation Intolerance Score Detects Loci Under Selection in Neuroinvasive Listeria monocytogenes.

Listeria monocytogenes is a Gram-positive bacterium that can be found in a broad range of environments, including soil, food, animals, and humans. L. monocytogenes can cause a foodborne disease manifesting as sepsis and meningo-encephalitis. To evaluate signals of selection within the core genome of neuroinvasive L. monocytogenes strains, we sequenced 122 L. monocytogenes strains from cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of Dutch meningitis patients and performed a genome-wide analysis using Tajima's D and ω (dN/dS). We also evaluated the residual variation intolerance score (RVIS), a computationally les

Fever and temporal headache in a 70-year-old male with presumed large vessels vasculitis.

BACKGROUND: Listeria monocytogenes is an opportunistic pathogen that causes severe infections of the Central Nervous System, such as meningitis or meningoencephalitis, and brain abscesses. Abscesses account for approximately 1-10% of CNS listerial infections and are observed in 1% of all listerial infections. METHODS: We describe a case of 70-year-old male patient who had several admissions in different hospitals over the last 8 weeks. RESULTS: He suffered from intermittent fever for over a month, recurrent episodes of headaches, disorientation and other neurological symptoms. His condition

Neuroinvasive Listeriosis: Could Petechial Hemorrhages be a Diagnostic Clue?

INTRODUCTION: Listeria monocytogenes-related central nervous system infections may involve the cerebral parenchyma. Meningitis and meningoencephalitis are the most commonly seen forms and mainly affect immunocompromised patients; however, a less frequent form, rhombencephalitis, can occur in otherwise healthy people. Early treatment with appropriate antibiotic therapy is crucial for this otherwise fatal disorder. However, it is not always possible to rapidly establish the diagnosis because of varying presentations and discrepancies in diagnostic tests. CASE REPORT: Herein we report 3 cases of

Detection of very long antisense transcripts by whole transcriptome RNA-Seq analysis of Listeria monocytogenes by semiconductor sequencing technology.

The Gram-positive bacterium Listeria monocytogenes is the causative agent of listeriosis, a severe food-borne infection characterised by abortion, septicaemia, or meningoencephalitis. L. monocytogenes causes outbreaks of febrile gastroenteritis and accounts for community-acquired bacterial meningitis in humans. Listeriosis has one of the highest mortality rates (up to 30%) of all food-borne infections. This human pathogenic bacterium is an important model organism for biomedical research to investigate cell-mediated immunity. L. monocytogenes is also one of the best characterised bacterial sys

Matrix metalloproteinase expression in sheep with listerial meningoencephalitis.

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) have been implicated in the pathogenesis of several central nervous system (CNS) diseases. In this study, we investigated the presence of Listeria monocytogenes antigens and detected the expression of MMP-9 and MMP-7 in the brains of 22 sheep with clinical signs and histopathological findings characteristic of listerial meningoencephalitis. Archived sections from the brainstem, cerebrum, and cerebellum were stained for immunohistochemistry. L. monocytogenes antigens were located mainly in the cytoplasm of neutrophils and some macrophages and/or extracellularly

Orthotopic Liver Transplantation: Is There a Risk for Listeria monocytogenes Infection?

Immunosuppression of any kind is a known risk factor for infection with Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes). Particularly, patients with impaired liver function are at increased risk of developing an aggravated course of infection with this bacterial pathogen (see Nolla-Salas et al.; 2002 and Cabellos et al.; 2008). It is a well-known pathogen in immunocompromised patients, but has only seldom been reported following orthotopic liver transplantation. Invasion of the central nervous system presenting as meningitis or meningoencephalitis and bacteremia are the principal clinical manifestat

Listeria meningoencephalitis in an immunocompetent person.

Listeria monocytogenes is a small, aerobic or facultative anaerobic, non-sporulating gram positive bacillus that can be isolated from soil, vegetation or animal reservoirs. There are six species of Listeria, and only L. monocytogenes is pathogenic for humans. Human disease occurs mainly in immunocompromised people, neonates and in pregnancy, while the cases in immunocompetent people are rare. CNS manifestations of the disease can be in form of meningitis, encephalitis, and also cerebritis and abscess since L. monocytogenes shows tropism for brain and brain stem as well for the meninges. [Frequent problems with antibiotic chemotherapy of bacterial CNS diseases. Case reports and recommendations for initial treatment].

The initial antibiotic treatment of bacterial meningoencephalitis has major implications for the course of the disease. The current spectrum of infectious agents must be considered. Antibiotics have to reach sufficient concentrations in the blood and cerebrospinal fluid for a bactericidal action to occur at the site of infection. Frequent problems arising in this condition are: (1) the non-observation of listerial infections, (2) the use of antibiotics not sufficiently active against gram-positive bacteria in pneumococcal meningitis, (3) the development of meningitis following the use of cipro

An epidemic of food-borne listeriosis in western Switzerland: description of 57 cases involving adults.

This article describes 57 cases of listeriosis that occurred in adults in western Switzerland during an outbreak associated with the consumption of a soft cheese. Twenty-one percent of the cases were of bacteremia, 40% were of meningitis, and 39% were of meningoencephalitis. Overall, 42% of the patients had an underlying disease and 54% were > 65 years of age. Patients with bacteremia were significantly older than those with meningitis or meningoencephalitis (median ages, 75, 69, and 55 years, respectively). The epidemic strain, defined by phage typing, was isolated in three-quarters of the li
