Listeriosis during pregnancy.

Listeriosis is an uncommon infection that has a unique predilection for pregnant women and may result in pregnancy loss. Contaminated food is the usual source of infection, and increased federal surveillance of foodstuffs is the most effective strategy for prevention of disease. Although dramatic epidemics have received the most publicity, more cases of perinatal listeriosis are isolated. If Listeria chorioamnionitis is diagnosed preterm, in contrast to other types of chorioamnionitis, in utero therapy with high-dose penicillin or trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole is possible, and preterm delivery

Protective immunity to Listeria monocytogenes elicited by immunization with heat-killed Listeria and IL-12. Potential mechanism of IL-12 adjuvanticity.

The results presented here demonstrate the striking potentiating effects of IL-12 when it is combined with listerial immunogens. Although HKLM alone does not elicit strong T-cell responses, the results presented here demonstrate that the combination of HKLM and IL-12 elicited vigorous Listeria-specific Th1-type T-cell responses when administered intraperitoneally. The intensity of these responses, as well as the cytokine profiles of the Listeria-specific peritoneal T cells and macrophages, was remarkably similar to that of Listeria-infected/immune mice. These studies also revealed that typical

Bacterial translocation and enteral nutrition in humans: an outsider looks in.

PURPOSE: To assess the literature documenting the existence of bacterial translocation in humans, the effects of enteral nutrition on bacterial translocation in humans, and the hypothesis that enteral nutrition prevents bacterial translocation in humans. DATA IDENTIFICATION: Sources included Medline search, references from review articles, and references from animal and human studies. STUDY SELECTION: The goal was to include all animal and human studies directly addressing questions of bacterial translocation and nutritional status or nutritional support. DATA EXTRACTION: An attempt was mad

Listeriosis in patients with connective tissue diseases.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with connective tissue diseases (CTD) are prone to infections, either from the disease itself or secondary to treatment. The incidence of listeriosis in immunosuppressed patients is increasing. We therefore evaluated the frequency of listeriosis, an otherwise rarely reported infection in the rheumatologic literature, in patients with CTD. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of listeria positive cultures in patients with CTD between 1982 and 1992 at a tertiary care center in Mexico City. RESULTS: We identified 8 patients: 7 with systemic lupus erythematosus and one with dermat

CD8+ T cell-mediated protection against an intracellular bacterium by perforin-dependent cytotoxicity.

Growth of Listeria monocytogenes is mainly controlled by macrophages, which are activated by specific T cells. A potential role of CD8+ T cells by direct lysis of infected cells was investigated in perforin-deficient mice generated by homologous recombination. The absence of perforin-mediated cytotoxicity resulted in delayed clearance of Listeria from the spleen but not the liver after primary infection, overall susceptibility to Listeria however was not increased. Protection against a secondary infection was drastically impaired in perforin-deficient mice. Adoptive transfer of immune spleen c

Pathogenicity and immunogenicity of Listeria monocytogenes small-plaque mutants defective for intracellular growth and cell-to-cell spread.

Listeria monocytogenes strains previously generated by transposon mutagenesis were examined with respect to virulence and induction of protective immunity in BALB/c mice. The phenotypic defects observed in these mutant L. monocytogenes strains included decreased hemolysin (listeriolysin O [LLO]) production, phospholipase C activity, intracellular growth, and/or cell-to-cell spread in vitro. While 50% lethal dose determinations performed with these mutant strains indicated reduced virulence for BALB/c mice, sublethal infection with the majority of these mutant strains provided protection agains

Latest news on listeriosis.

Emphasis is given essentially to the presentation of recent data in terms of our total knowledge of Listeria and human and animal listeriosis. This disease of extremely varied origin can be studied in terms of two groups of subjects: females in gestation and all other categories of individuals. There was initially only a single species of Listeria, but at least five are known today, only two of which are pathogenic. Their pathogenic power is related essentially to the presence of listerolysin O, although this is not the only factor involved. Identification of Listeria is easy and can be comple

Reproducibility of seasonal effects in antibody formation and host resistance in the outbred mouse.

The purpose of this study was to assess the reproducibility of any seasonal effects in the outbred CD1 mouse of antibody production to sheep red blood cells (SRBCs) and host resistance to the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. A marked seasonal effect on antibody production was seen when 5- to 6-week-old female CD1 mice were studied on a weekly basis for a period of 2 years. Maintained on a 12:12 h light:dark schedule, animals were held for 12 days prior to experiment to insure physical condition and acclimatization to the lighting regimen. Beginning at 4 h after lights on (HALO) for day 1 and

[The dilemma of listeriosis control by the public health office].

The frequent occurrence of Listeria monocytogenes both superficially and in certain foods requires measures in accordance with the Federal Laws on Communicable Diseases and Safe Foods to study possible sources of the infectious agent and prevention if positive findings are reported. On the other hand, due to good defence mechanisms, the majority of the population are not at great risk. This excludes, however, immunodeficient patients, aged persons and newborn. The Federal Law on Notifiable Diseases requires only the reporting of meningitis and encephalitis as well as of listeriosis in newborn.

Serological investigations of the hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) in Styria. 2. Report.

From 1975 to 1982 investigations of 64 hedgehogs for anthropozoonoses and infectious diseases were carried out in all regions of Styria, Austria. The serological investigations revealed positive results against rickettsiosis, (Q-fever and RMSF-groups antigen), (ornithosis, toxoplasmosis, listeriosis, against adenoviruses and herpesvirus). Other studies by NOSEK et al. (1967); TROGER et al. (1976); KAASERER et al. (1976) and STUNZNER et al. (1976) report on the hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) as indicator for the distribution of infectious diseases. The present study should help to clarify this

Foodborne listeriosis. WHO Working Group.

Listeria monocytogenes is widely distributed in the environment and may be transmitted to man through contamination of foodstuffs at any point from source to kitchen. Milk and dairy products, meat, poultry, vegetables, salads and seafoods have all been found to be contaminated. Unlike most other foodborne pathogens, L. monocytogenes can multiply in refrigerators (4-6 degrees C). Pasteurization reduces their numbers in raw milk to levels that do not pose an appreciable risk to human health. The infection has relatively low morbidity but a high case fatality. At greatest risk are pregnant women a

Successful surgical treatment of a case of listeria monocytogenes endocarditis.

Endocarditis due to listeria monocytogenes is rare with only twenty one cases to our knowledge appearing in the world's literature to date. We report a further case with a successful surgical outcome and stress the importance of surgery in the treatment of infective endocarditis. There is a clear predilection of this organism for the left side of the heart and systemic embolization is frequent. In contrast to other clinical forms of listeriosis, endocarditis has not been associated with debilitating states or immunosuppressive treatments. Though clinical and laboratory data suggest a similarit

Defective anti-listerial responses in deciduoma of pseudopregnant mice.

Two different hormonal regimens to induce pseudopregnancy resulted in a pronounced increase in the susceptibility of the murine uterus to intraluminal injections of Listeria monocytogenes. Preimmunization, which profoundly augments systemic listeria resistance, had no effect on this increased uterine susceptibility. Anti-listerial responses in other organs were unaffected by pseudopregnancy. Animals manifesting increased susceptibility formed distinct uterine swellings in response to the combination of hormones and uterine listeria. These swellings correspond to previously described deciduoma

Listeria monocytogenes endocarditis.

A fatal case of endocarditis due to Listeria monocytogenes is reported. Case reports of endocarditis due to this organism are rare but indicate a higher mortality than with many other causes of bacterial endocarditis. The size of the problem may be underestimated because the organism has a "diphtheroid' appearance and may be incorrectly dismissed as a contaminant.

Clinical investigations in a goat herd with outbreaks of listeriosis.

The majority of 50 nonpregnant dairy goats in a herd showed acute symptoms of disease for 1–2 days after a sudden change in weather conditions, feeding regime and management. In 17 of the does the condition progressed with symptoms of septicaemia with depression, fever, inappetence and hypogalactia for a period of up to 5 weeks. Only 1 of these 17 animals died. Three weeks after the first symptoms were seen, 7 other animals showed typical symptoms of listeric encephalitis. All but 1 recovered within 2 weeks. Treatment with penicillin seemed to have good effect against both these disease forms.

[Neonatal listeriosis: third Spanish series on 45 observations (author's transl)].

During the period January'69-June'81, 45 cases of listeriosis in neonatal period were observed. 37 of them had an early onset (82%) while other eight had late infection disease (18%). Incidence was 1/6,346 newborns with most frequent presentation in spring. No epidemic forms or asymptomatic carriers were discovered. Perinatal, clinical, analytical, radiological, bacteriologic and pathological data are shown, emphasizing differences between the two clinical forms. Overall mortality of 43%, although brought to zero in the last six years, together with the same percentage of neurological sequela

[Listeriosis in the adult: report of 7 cases].

Human beings are frequently exposed to Listeria monocytogenes, but these microorganisms are rarely pathogenic for healthy subjects. In recent years an increase in the frequency of listeriosis has been reported, especially in patients with severe underlying diseases. In the present work the clinical, microbiological, therapeutic and prognostic characteristics of seven adult cases of listeriosis are reviewed. L. monocytogenes was isolated from blood, cerebrospinal fluid or both. Most patients had an underlying illness (one alcoholic, one diabetic, one lymphoma, and two aplastic anemia), and thre

The relevance to protection of three forms of delayed skin-test response evoked by m. leprae and other mycobacteria in mice. Correlation with the classical work in the guinea-pig.

The controversy surrounding the protective role of 'delayed hypersensitivity' in tuberculous guinea-pigs has never been resolved. This controversy has arisen because the term 'delayed hypersensitivity' is used indiscriminately to describe both a type of necrotic skin-test reactivity which does not appear until 4-6 weeks after infection, and also non-necrotic reactions which can be elicited within a few days. Responses closely analogous to both have been characterized in mice immunized with mycobacteria. Simple criteria are described which allow these responses to be distinguished from one anot

Polyadenylic acid-polyuridylic acid (poly A : U) and experimental murine brucellosis. I. Effect of single and double-stranded polynucleotides on Brucella abortus in vivo and in vitro.

The double stranded polynucleotide, poly A : U, when administered intraperitoneally at the same time as intravenous infection with Brucella abortus, suppressed the growth of that organism in the spleen and liver of mice. Single stranded poly A or poly U were not effective. On the other hand both the single and double stranded forms enhanced the growth of Br. abortus in broth culture. Poly A : U did not enhance the blood clearance of intravenously administered Br. abortus. Indeed its suppressive effect was not apparent until 2 days after administration. When mice given Br. abortus and poly A :

Listeria monocytogenes endocarditis: report of a case and review of the literature.

Endocarditis due to Listeria monocytogenes is rare with only 13 cases cited in the world's literature. We report an additional case with a review of the previously reported patients. In contrast to other clinical forms of listeriosis, endocarditis does not tend to occur in patients with severe underlying disorders or those on immunosuppressive regimens. Listeric endocarditis has a predilection for left-sided cardiac involvement (100 percent), and systemic embolization is a major clinical feature (58 percent). Prognosis of listeric endocarditis is unfavorable and the mortality rate (43 percent)
