Whole-body X-ray treatment was experimentally applied (380 median-line dosage) to eight Merino mutton sheep aged approximately one year. Five of the test animals were lost between 16 and 25 days after irradiation. In view of the possible role of platelets and coagulation mechanisms in the growth and dissemination of solid tumors, a number of hematological parameters were followed during development of an experimental syngeneic tumor in mice, Lewis lung carcinoma. This report reviews 10 years' experience with elective splenectomy in patients over 55 years of age. Of 55 patients, 25 were over the age of 65. The majority of splenectomies (41) were performed for hematological disorders exclusive of lymphoma, but including ITP, hypersplenism (both primary and secondary), Felty's syndrome and myeloid metaplasia. Eighty-two patients with metastatic tumor received a therapeutic regimen consisting of BCNU, 100 mg/m2, and cyclophosphamide, 400 mg/m2, both intravenously on day 1, followed by adriamycin, 40 mg/m2, on day 2. Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), a disorder of unknown etiology, appears to be a syndrome often associated with infectious, vascular, or autoimmune diseases. Two patients with Wegener's granulomatosis have been treated with chlorambucil and prednisolone continuosly for 3 and 5 years, respectively. This treatment was effective in controlling the disease, but bone marrow toxicity with severe pancytopenia developed in both cases. An atypical pyruvate kinase (PK) in erythrocytes was studied in a family with several different haematological diseases: non-spherocytic haemolysis, thrombocytopenia, myelofibrosis and polycythaemic traits. Atypical intraerythrocytic PK was also found in a group of non-related patients with myelofibrosis and polycythaemia vera. The atypical PK was characterised by abnormal urea inhibition and other relevant biochemical parameters.

Disorders which produce an increase in blood loss after skin trauma do not necessarily result in a prolongation of the bleeding time. A standardized method to quantify this blood loss using the Coulter Counter model S (or other available haemoglobinometer) is reported. The need for and use of such a technique is illustrated by the investigation of primary or secondary haemostatic disorders and assessment of transfusion studies.
