Characterization and arbovirus susceptibility of cultured CERNI cells derived from sika deer (Cervus nippon).

Cervus nippon (sika deer) are widely distributed throughout eastern Asia. Deer possess a variety of antibodies against several zoonotic pathogens, indicating that they act as reservoir of zoonoses. In this study, we reported the characterization of cultured cells derived from sika deer and evaluated their susceptibility to arthropod-borne viruses to clarify their usefulness in virological studies. Cells derived from testicular tissue in Dulbecco's modified eagle medium with 16% fetal bovine serum started growing as primary cultured cells. The diploid cells consisted of 68 chromosomes, consiste

Crescentic Glomerulonephritis and Portal Hypertension with Chronic Q Fever: A Case Report and Comprehensive Literature Review.

Q fever, an infectious zoonotic disease caused by Coxiella burnetii, remains prevalent in China. Systemic infections can result in renal or hepatic complications; however, it is rare for both the kidneys and liver to be simultaneously affected. We present a case of a patient who exhibited fever, rapid deterioration in renal function, thrombocytopenia, and severe ascites. Renal biopsy revealed crescentic glomerulonephritis, while liver biopsy demonstrated non-cirrhotic portal hypertension. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) identified the presence of Coxiella burnetii in both venous

Development of an all-in-one real-time PCR assay for simultaneous detection of spotted fever group rickettsiae, severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus and hantaan virus prevalent in central China.

Central China has been reported to be one of the most important endemic areas of zoonotic infection by spotted fever group rickettsiae (SFGR), severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV) and hantaan virus (HTNV). Due to similar clinical symptoms, it is challenging to make a definite diagnosis rapidly and accurately in the absence of microbiological tests. In the present study, an all-in-one real-time PCR assay was developed for the simultaneous detection of nucleic acids from SFGR, SFTSV and HTNV. Three linear standard curves for determining SFGR-ompA, SFTSV-L and HTNV-L were obt

Japanese spotted fever in an area endemic to SFTS virus: Case report and review of the literature.

RATIONALE: The geographic spread of Japanese spotted fever (JSF) in China is gradually expanding, particularly in regions where severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is highly prevalent, with both diseases sharing similarities in epidemiology and clinical presentation. The microbiological diagnosis of JSF is challenging, compounded by low awareness among healthcare professionals in newly affected areas. Moreover, primary healthcare facilities without polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing capabilities for SFTS often misdiagnose JSF as SFTS. PATIENT CONCERNS: All 3 patients had a

Epidemiology and clinical characteristics of Mediterranean spotted fever suspects in a university hospital, Tunisia, 2000-2020.

Mediterranean spotted fever (MSF) is a rickettsial disease caused by Rickettsia conorii, transmitted by brown dog ticks, and endemic in the Mediterranean region. Its incidence is increasing, with varied presentations and potential complications because of delayed diagnosis. This study retrospectively included 173 adult patients hospitalized for MSF at La Rabta University Hospital, Tunis, from 2000 to 2020. Patients, predominantly male (67.6%) and averaging 40 years of age, mostly resided in urban areas (82.7%). Animal exposure was reported in 74.6%, and cases peaked during the hot season (68.8

Human granulocytic anaplasmosis with rash and rhabdomyolysis: A case report.

Human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA) is a tick-borne infection caused by Anaplasma phagocytophilum. Only seven cases of HGA have been reported in Japan to date. We report the case of a 61-year-old female farmer who developed HGA with rash and rhabdomyolysis. The patient had fever and erythema covering the entire body, including the palms. An induration with an eschar was observed on the right leg, indicating that the patient had been bitten by a tick. Elevated serum creatinine and creatinine kinase levels and hematuria indicated rhabdomyolysis. We suspected Japanese spotted fever, a tick-born

Thrombocytopenia as a Prognostic Marker in Patients with Acute Encephalitis at a Tertiary Care Center in Northern India.

BACKGROUND: Acute encephalitis (AE) is associated with a high burden of mortality and permanent disability and has a spectrum of underlying etiologies. The prognosis of encephalitis is difficult and almost all the patients seem to be at a high risk of poor outcomes. A number of physiological changes take place during encephalitis and have been evaluated for their prognostic value. Platelet count, which has been recognized as a surrogate prognostic marker in various viral illnesses, has recently been recognized to have a prognostic value in AE too. In the present study, we attempted to study th

Flea-Borne Typhus as a COVID-19 Mimic: A Report of Four Cases.

Flea-borne typhus (FBT), due to Rickettsia typhi and R. felis, is an infection causing fever, headache, rash, hepatitis, thrombocytopenia, and diverse organ manifestations. Cough occurs in about 30% of patients with FBT, and chest X-ray abnormalities are seen in 17%. Severe pulmonary manifestations have also been reported in FBT, including adult respiratory distress syndrome and pulmonary embolism. Because of these pulmonary manifestations, FBT can mimic Coronavirus Illness 2019 (COVID-19), a febrile illness with prominent respiratory involvement. Flea-borne typhus and COVID-19 may also have s
