BACKGROUND: Vitamin K deficiency can lead to severe coagulation dysfunction, which may be dangerous and fatal, especially in patients undergoing surgery.
METHODS: We report an 84-year-old male patient with gallstones and cholecystitis who had a severe coagulation disorder without bleeding symptoms after endoscopic papillary balloon dilation for removal of bile duct stones. After vitamin K supplementation, the coagulation dysfunction was corrected the next day.
RESULTS: In this case, long-term antibiotic treatment, inadequate diet, and abnormal liver function led to coagulation dysfunction. A

Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT), also known as Olser-Weber-Rendu, is a genetic disorder characterized by abnormal blood vessel formations. Inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern, the condition manifests through symptoms such as nosebleeds (epistaxis), spider-like blood vessels (telangiectasias) in mucous membranes often appearing as spots or lesions, and abnormal connections between arteries and veins. Here we present the case of a 66-year-old male who came to the emergency department (ED) with symptoms consistent with a respiratory tract infection. Relevant lab tests revealed

Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is due to autoantibodies against platelet surface antigens. ITP is considered as either primary, with no clear etiology, or as secondary ITP (drug-induced; underlying diseases). Autoantibodies lead both to loss of platelets in the spleen and/or liver but simultaneously reduce their production. Contrary to other disorders with thrombocytopenia, ITP has reduced levels of thrombopoetin. ITP remains a diagnosis of exclusion. A single defining laboratory test does not exist. Glycoprotein-specific antibodies can be detected in only about 50% of cases. Ruling out EDTA-in

BACKGROUND: Primary Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP) is an autoimmune hematological condition characterized by isolated thrombocytopenia and frequently presents with oral manifestations. However, reports of primary ITP in patients with Turner Syndrome (TS) are exceptionally rare, with few cases documented in the literature. Herein, we describe an unusual case of primary ITP with exuberant oral manifestations in a patient with TS.
CASE REPORT: A 29-year-old woman was referred to an oral diagnostic service with complaints of "blood blisters and gum bleeding" lasting 8 h. On extraoral physi

Primary immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is an acquired autoimmune disorder characterized by an isolated decrease in platelets below 100 × 109/l after the exclusion of other conditions associated with thrombocytopenia. We investigated the role of different memory T-cell subsets, including T stem cell memory (TSCM), in children diagnosed with primary ITP and its association with therapeutic duration. This case-control study included 39 pediatric patients with acute ITP admitted to the Children's Hospital at Assiut University. Using a FACSCanto flow cytometer, CD8 + and CD4 + T-lymphocytes were gat

BACKGROUND: Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is a prevalent autoimmune bleeding disorder, with the primary objective of treatment being the prevention of bleeding. Clinical investigations have indicated that individuals with ITP face an elevated risk of thrombosis, and the occurrence of thromboembolic events in ITP patients can be attributed to a multitude of factors. However, establishing a definitive causal relationship between ITP and thrombosis remains challenging.
METHODS: A two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study utilizing summary data from FinnGen consortium and UK Biobank was under

BACKGROUND: Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is a common cause of severe thrombocytopenia in dogs. The pathogenesis of nonassociative, primary ITP (pITP) appears complex, with ill-defined thrombopoietic response.
OBJECTIVES: Develop an immunoassay to measure plasma canine thrombopoietin (TPO) concentration and characterize TPO concentrations in dogs with pITP.
ANIMALS: Forty-one healthy dogs, 8 dogs in an induced ITP model (3 control, 5 ITP), and 58 pITP dogs.
METHODS: Recombinant canine TPO (rcTPO) was purchased and its identity confirmed by mass spectrometry. Monoclonal antibodies were raise

BACKGROUND: Scurvy is an uncommon disease in developed countries caused by deficiency of vitamin C. We present a case of scurvy in a 14-year-old male with autism with both novel presentation and imaging findings. This case had the novel presentation of lower limb deep vein thrombosis (DVT) secondary to compression of the external iliac vein from large bilateral iliac wing subperiosteal hematomas. Subperiosteal hematoma is a well-recognised feature of scurvy but large and bilateral pelvic subperiosteal hematoma causing DVT has not previously been described.

Scurvy is caused by vitamin C deficiency and is often thought of as an ancient malady. However, it still afflicts present-day patients with insufficient nutrition, excessive alcohol consumption and disorders of absorption. Scurvy is traditionally characterised by ecchymosis, petechiae, haemorrhages, poor wound healing, myalgias and arthralgias, but it can also present with non-specific symptoms, including mood changes, fatigue, malaise and dyspnoea. Although scurvy can present with signs of excess bleeding, it does not involve blood clotting. We present a case of concurrent scurvy and pulmonar

Scurvy is a disease caused by vitamin C deficiency. Although rare, in recent years, the number of scurvy cases in children with eating disorders has increased. Its manifestations are varied because vitamin C is a cofactor in numerous processes, such as collagen synthesis. The typical skin manifestations include petechiae, bruising, and hyperkeratosis. Mucosal involvement manifests as gingivitis with hypertrophy, bleeding, and loss of teeth. The diagnosis is based on clinical findings and may be confirmed by measuring plasma vitamin C levels. The objective of this study was to describe a cohort

The immune-mediated small vessel vasculitis is known as Schoenlein-Henoch purpura predominantly from pediatrics and in these cases occurs more frequently after infections of the upper airways. In adults, immunoglobulin A (IgA) vasculitis often proceeds more severely und recurrently with the classical tetrad of skin manifestations in the sense of leukocytoclastic vasculitis, joint affection, gastrointestinal involvement and IgA nephritis, in contrast to the mostly mild and self-limiting course in children. The background of this systemic vasculitis with formation of IgA immune complexes is cons

BACKGROUND Leukocytoclastic vasculitis (LCV) is an atypical form of cutaneous paraneoplastic manifestation. Its association with multiple myeloma (MM) is even rarer and is associated with poor prognosis and short survival, regardless of the therapy instituted. Different treatment approaches are necessary. We present a case in which LCV was the first manifestation of MM, and high-intensity laser therapy (HILT) was used as an option to accelerate healing and control pain. CASE REPORT A 76-year-old woman presented with pain and paresthesia in her lower limbs, associated with palpable purpura. The

Scurvy is a rare nutritional disorder caused by deficiency of ascorbic acid (vitamin C). It is often under-diagnosed in clinical settings, especially in North America where population statistics are unavailable. However, scurvy is more common than previously thought and appears to be re-emerging in children with developmental delays. Here, we review the pertinent literature and present a case of a previously healthy, 5-year-old, non-verbal boy who presented with multiple, acute, and subacute spontaneous epidural hemorrhages managed by neurosurgical intervention. He remained in hospital for 17

Primary immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is an autoimmune bleeding disorder, and chemokines have been shown to be dysregulated in autoimmune disorders. We conducted a prospective analysis to identify potential chemokines that could enhance the diagnostic accuracy and bleeding evaluation in ITP patients. In the discovery cohort, a Luminex-based assay was employed to quantify concentrations of plasma multiple chemokines. These levels were subjected to comparative analysis using a cohort of 60 ITP patients and 17 patients with thrombocytopenia other than ITP (non-ITP). Additionally, comparative eval

Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) represents an uncommon hematological side effect associated with nivolumab, and its distinct clinical attributes remain poorly defined. This research aimed to explore the clinical manifestations and outcomes of ITP induced by nivolumab. Reports on nivolumab induced ITP up to April 30, 2024, were collected for retrospective analysis. The study involved 34 patients with a median age of 67 years (range 32, 82). The onset of ITP varied from 10 to 100 days post initial dosage, with a median onset at 70 days. The majority of patients exhibited no symptoms, with only 23.

Scurvy is a nutritional disease caused by ascorbic acid (vitamin C) deficiency. Althought currently it is a rare disease, we should considerer it in the differential diagnosis of purpura and arthritis in patients with restrictive diets. We present the case of a 49-year-old man with a history of a nutritional disorder presented to our hospital with generalized purpura and hemarthros. Following the anamnesis and laboratory findings, rheumatological, infectious and hematological etiologies were excluded. Finally, the diagnosis of scurvy was made upon demostration poor levels of vitamin C and a sp
