The mitochondrial branched chain aminotransferase-deficient mouse model (BCATm KO), which exhibits elevated plasma and tissue branched chain amino acids (BCAAs), was used to study the effect of BCAAs on mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) regulation of organ size. BCATm is the first enzyme in the BCAA catabolic pathway. BCATm KO mouse exhibited hypertrophy of heart, kidneys, and spleen. On the other hand, the mass of the gastrocnemius was reduced relative to body mass. Feeding the mice with a diet supplemented with rapamycin prevented the enlargement of the heart and spleen, sugge

A 72-year-old man was referred for a triphasic bone scintigraphy to evaluate painful prosthetic implant of the knee. In all the study phases, images showed abnormal uptake close to the tibial portion of the implant. Interestingly, later whole-body images revealed high radiopharmaceutical accumulation in the left hypochondrium. Subsequent radiolabeled leukocyte scintigraphy confirmed radiotracer accumulation in the same localizations. As an important background the patient underwent splenectomy owing to Banti syndrome 60 years earlier. A Tc-labeled heat-damaged red blood cell scintigraphy was t

OBJECTIVES: Mature lymphoid neoplasms presenting with 'prominent splenomegaly without significant lymphadenopathy' are uncommon and pose unique diagnostic challenges as compared to those associated with lymphadenopathy. Their descriptions in the literature are largely limited to a few case series. We analyzed the spectrum of these lymphomas diagnosed by peripheral blood (PB) and/or bone marrow (BM) examination.
METHODS: Over a period of 6 years, 75 patients were diagnosed with a lymphoma from PB/BM who had presented with predominant splenomegaly. Their clinical and laboratory records includin

Splenic marginal zone lymphoma (SMZL) accounts for less than 2% of all non-Hodgkin lymphomas. We identified 107 cases diagnosed with SMZL between 1985 and 2012 from the British Columbia Cancer Agency Centre for Lymphoid Cancer and Lymphoma Pathology Databases. Patient characteristics were: median age 67 years (range 30-88), male 40%, stage IV 98%, splenomegaly 93%, bone marrow involvement 96%, peripheral blood involvement 87%. As initial treatment, 52 underwent splenectomy (10 with chemotherapy), 38 chemotherapy alone (21 chemoimmunotherapy containing rituximab, 1 rituximab alone), two antivir

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 3-year-old 10-kg (22-lb) neutered male Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was referred because of an episode of acute vomiting and diarrhea.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: On physical examination, mild splenomegaly and prominent submandibular and popliteal lymph nodes were detected. Complete blood cell count revealed a high WBC count, characterized by a moderate lymphocytosis with 62% unclassified cells and severe thrombocytopenia with macroplatelets. On cytologic evaluation, the unclassified cells were described as large, neoplastic lymphoid cells containing a large nucleus with lacy chro

Ultrasound provides data of extremely great value when studying spleen pathology, being diagnostic in splenomegaly and splenic trauma, as well as offering a good approach to the diagnosis of both benign and malignant focal pathology, particularly lymphoma. However, for the evaluation of adrenal and retroperitoneal diseases, other techniques such as CT or MRI are more suitable, even though ultrasound is still an excellent screening and monitoring method, as well as being useful in non-invasive therapeutic approaches.

PURPOSE: Splenomegaly and splenic siderosis are well-known findings in beta-thalassemia major. We explored the relation between splenic size, splenic and hepatic siderosis in transfusion-dependent beta-thalassemic patients, assessed by MR imaging.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Abdominal MR imaging studies of 47 consecutive thalassemic patients and 10 healthy subjects, used as controls, were retrospectively reviewed. The signal intensity ratios of spleen and liver to the right paraspinous muscle (S/M, L/M, respectively) were calculated on T1, intermediate, and T2*-weighted gradient-echo sequences, sp

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the frequency of different sonographic splenic disorders in dogs with different anatomic forms of malignant lymphoma. Additionally, the occurrence of the moth-eaten pattern in the parenchyma of the spleen in patients with diseases other than lymphoma should be investigated.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective analysis of patient data collected from dogs histologically or cytologically diagnosed with malignant lymphoma and for which ultrasonographic images were available before the initiation of therapy. Patient data from dogs with a moth-eaten pattern within the splenic

BACKGROUND: Splenomegaly is a characteristic symptom of schistosome infection. Unlike the well known hepatic pathology of schistosomiasis, splenomegaly has received little scientific research and is generally considered to be a non-specific congestion caused by increased blood pressure within the venous sinuses. Moreover, to date, few studies have reported the deposition of schistosome eggs in the spleen. In a previous study, however, we observed that prolonged S. japonicum infections destroyed the structure of the lymphoid follicles in the spleen of mice at 8 weeks post-infection and found th

A 67-year-old male patient who was diagnosed with primary myelofibrosis 4 years ago did not respond to conventional therapies. The splenomegaly progressively increased, which caused spleen infarctions and led to the decision to perform a splenectomy procedure. After splenectomy, the patient started treatment with ruxolitinib. In the first month of ruxolitinib treatment, the patient became transfusion-free and all constitutional symptoms disappeared. However, in the sixth month of ruxolitinib treatment, the disease transformed to acute myeloblastic leukemia, and the patient died 1 month later.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis (or bilharzia), a major parasitic disease, affects more than 260 million people worldwide. In chronic cases of intestinal schistosomiasis caused by trematodes of the Schistosoma genus, hepatic fibrosis develops as a host immune response to the helminth eggs, followed by potentially lethal portal hypertension. In this study, we characterized hepatic and splenic features of a murine model of intestinal schistosomiasis using in vivo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and evaluated the transverse relaxation time T2 as a non-invasive imaging biomarker for monitoring hepati

Primary splenic angiosarcoma (PSA) is the most unusual type of malignancy with early multifocal metastasis through hematogenous spread. PSA is generally believed to originate from splenic sinusoidal vascular endothelium with a high rate of metastasis and to have a poor prognosis. Its etiology and pathogenetic mechanisms have not yet been clearly described. Thus far, only approximately 200 cases have been reported. PSA has variable symptomatology with the potential to present with life-threatening complications. The diagnosis of PSA is challenging; and often late. PSA should be considered in th

BACKGROUND: The management of intestinal rotational abnormalities (IRA) in heterotaxy syndrome (HS) remains inconsistent. Because of the high incidence of malrotation in HS, screening of asymptomatic patients is standard of care in some institutions. The Ladd procedure is the treatment for malrotation, and has been reported to have high complication rates in HS patients.
METHODS: We performed a systematic review of publications describing IRA in pediatric HS patients from January 1993 to present. The incidence of volvulus on surgical exploration was determined. Perioperative and long-term out

BACKGROUND: Splenic abcess is an uncommon complication for cancer treatment. It occurs more frequently in immunocompromised patients. They are characterized by high mortality. The classic triad (fever, pain of the left hypochondrium, and sensitive mass left) is only present in one-third of cases the clinical spectrum ranging from no symptoms to events such as fever, nausea, vomiting, weight loss, abdominal pain left, splenomegaly. Treatment options are limited, but must be discussed and adapted to the patient profile.

We report a case of a 47-year-old man who presented with hepatosplenomegaly, anaemia and massive splenic infarct. A series of investigations led us to a diagnosis of atypical chronic myeloid leucaemia, a rare variety of a mixed myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative neoplasm. This is the first case of atypical CML presenting with massive splenic infarction.

Splenic cyst(s) may be noted as an incidental finding on conventional imaging techniques, or as a result of evaluation of a patient with left upper quadrant pain, left shoulder pain, abdominal enlargement, or splenomegaly. Lymphangioma of the spleen is an extremely rare and benign neoplasm in adults, which is characterized by cystic dilatation of the lymphatic vessels in splenic parenchyma. This report describes a case of multiple splenic lymphangiomas in a 41-year-old female. She underwent abdominal ultrasonography for a health check-up. She had no symptoms, and physical examination did not r

Primary splenic angiosarcoma is an extremely rare and aggressive neoplasm. The prognosis of this disease is dismal, and the mean survival is less than 6 months after the diagnosis. This neoplasm typically presents with abdominal pain, splenomegaly, weight loss, and spontaneous splenic rupture. Fever is a very rare presentation of splenic angiosarcoma. Here we report the case of a 64-year-old man who presented with fever and anemia. A laparoscopic splenectomy was performed and revealed splenic angiosarcoma. The postoperative course was uneventful and the patient received 5 cycles of adjuvant ch
