This review is based upon an invited lecture for the 52nd Annual Meeting of the British Association of Paediatric Surgeons, July 2015. The aetiology of biliary atresia (BA) is at best obscure, but it is probable that a number of causes or pathophysiological mechanisms may be involved leading to the final common phenotype we recognise clinically. BACKGROUND: Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterised by abnormal ciliary motion and impaired mucociliary clearance, leading to recurrent respiratory infections, sinusitis, otitis media and male infertility. Some patients also have laterality defects. We recently reported the identification of three disease-causing PCD genes in the Irish Traveller population; RSPH4A, DYX1C1 and CCNO. We have since assessed an additional Irish Traveller family with a complex phenotype involving PCD who did not have any of the previously identified PCD mutations.

INTRODUCTION: Spontaneous splenic rupture is a rare but dangerous event that requires prompt diagnosis and frequently an emergency splenectomy. Previous case reports have described the occurrence in patients with medical conditions, anticoagulant treatments, endoscopic procedures, laparoscopic surgery or no particular predisposing factor. PURPOSE: We retrospectively assessed the feasibility of a side-hole catheter placement with fixation and embolization in the common hepatic artery (CHA) (modified CHA-coil method) for hepatic arterial infusion (HAI) chemotherapy.

We present a case report of splenic abscess causing pneumoperitoneum in a case of uncontrolled diabetes. The patient presented with chronic pain abdomen and fever which later evolved to acute abdomen during the course of hospital stay. An X-ray showed pneumoperitoneum and exploratory laparotomy was performed under a strong clinical suspicion of hollow viscus perforation. The patient was treated with antibiotics and had an uneventful recovery.

Imaging plays a major role in the evaluation of patients who present to the emergency department with acute left upper quadrant (LUQ) pain. A 46 years old female patient presented with worsening of abdominal pain of 12 days duration & abdominal swelling of 15 years. On examination, she had an elliptical, mildly tender mass on the periumblical area extending to the right flank & the suprapubic area. It is mobile & firm in consistency. The intra op finding was huge spleen weighing 2 kgs, rotated 360 degrees clockwise, situated over the right side of the abdomen. Wandering spleen is a rare condition that accounts for less than 0.25% of all indications for splenectomy. It is characterized by ectopic localization of the spleen owing to the lack or weakening of its ligaments. Torsion is the most common complication due to its long pedicle and high mobility, which may result in acute abdomen. We report a case of torsion in a wandering spleen in a 28-year-old male presenting with an acute abdomen that was treated by splenectomy.

PURPOSE: To assess T2 HASTE MR in acute abdominal imaging and ascertain if it is a reliable alternative to CT in patients under 60.
METHOD AND MATERIALS: In a prospective diagnostic performance study from January 2009 to December 2013, patients under 60 presenting with acute abdominal pain, that required imaging following surgical review, were imaged with T2 HASTE MR. Rapid acquisition HASTE (Half Fourier Acquisition Single Shot Turbo Spin Echo) coronal and axial sequences were obtained, without intravenous contrast.
