BACKGROUND: Myocarditis is a serious consequence of diphtheria; however, the occurrence of a subsequent right ventricular (RV) thrombus is exceedingly rare. We provide an uncommon case of post-diphtheritic myocarditis complicated by a right ventricular thrombus and secondary pneumonia, emphasizing its effective multi-modal therapy and subsequent recovery.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 19-year-old female arrived at our emergency department with acute dyspnea and chest pain two weeks after a 3-day hospitalization for pharyngeal diphtheria at Galkacyo Regional Hospital. Laboratory analyses revealed incre

OBJECTIVES: Diphtheria remains endemic in Pakistan, with cases increasing following the COVID-19 pandemic despite ongoing vaccination programs. This study analyzes the genomic diversity, virulence, and antimicrobial resistance patterns of pharyngeal diphtheria strains collected during the Karachi outbreak.
METHODS: Corynebacterium diphtheriae isolates from a tertiary care hospital laboratory in Karachi (August 2023-October 2024) were included. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing and whole-genome sequencing of phenotypically confirmed isolates were performed. Phylogenetic and bioinformatics a

Diphtheria is a vaccine-preventable disease and is caused by toxigenic strains of Corynebacterium diphtheriae. Several case reports have been published in the recent years, and this resurgence of cases has occurred mainly in adolescent and adult populations. Also, several research articles have reported waning immunity against diphtheria in adults who have completed childhood immunization. Thus, it is an important need to conduct larger sero-surveillance studies to understand the cause of rising diphtheria cases. Here, we report a case of a 23-year-old pregnant women of 8 weeks' gestation who

INTRODUCTION: Diphtheria due to Corynebacteriumdiphtheriae (C. diphtheriae) has become rare in developed countries. In France only 10 cases of toxigenic diphtheria have been reported since 1989, in all cases causing pharyngitis and all emanating from endemic countries with exception of one contact case. We report herein 13 cases with cutaneous diphtheria, in 5 of which diphtheria toxin was produced, and all imported into France between 2015 and 2018.
OBSERVATIONS: Thirteen patients aged 4 to 77 years presented painful and rapidly progressive round ulcerations of the legs, that were superficia

Corynebacterium diphtheriae is the leading cause of pharyngeal diphtheria, a respiratory disease characterized by formation of a pseudomembrane at the site of infection. Although outbreaks of C. diphtheriae infections are rare nowadays, the emergence of multidrug-resistant C. diphtheriae strains is one of the most significant public health concerns worldwide. Although C. diphtheriae has been studied for more than a century and diphtheria toxin and pili have been identified as major virulence factors, little is known about factors involved in bacterial colonization and development of disease. Corynebacterium diphtheriae (C. diphtheriae) is a relatively rare pathogen in most Western countries. While toxin producing strains can cause pharyngeal diphtheria with potentially fatal outcomes, the more common presentation is wound infections. The diphtheria toxin is encoded on a prophage and can also be carried by Corynebacterium ulcerans and Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis. Currently, across Europe, infections are mainly diagnosed in travelers and refugees from regions where diphtheria is more endemic, patients from urban areas with poor hygiene, and intravenous drug users. Diphtheria is an infectious but vaccine preventable disease caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae and humans are the only reservoir. While toxigenic strains most frequently cause pharyngeal diphtheria, non-toxigenic strains commonly cause cutaneous infections. In 2016, there was a sudden increase in cases of C. diphtheriae reported in Malaysia. The toxigenic strains are currently determined using Elek's test and are carried out only in the reference laboratory. With the sudden increase in diphtheria cases in Malaysia, it is important for local laboratories in state hospitals to be able to perf

BACKGROUND: In June 2015, a 45-year-old man suffering from acute necrotic tonsillitis and throat phlegmon was hospitalized in Nuremberg, Germany. After emergency surgery the patient was initially treated with antibiotics.
RESULTS: A throat swab grew a toxigenic Corynebacterium diphtheriae biovar mitis strain. The patient's vaccination status was not documented and the patient was tested serologically for anti-diphtheria antibodies showing no protective immunity. Extensive control investigations were performed by the local health department showing no likely source of his infection.

The complete genome sequence of the type strain Corynebacterium imitans DSM 44264 comprises 2,565,321 bp with a mean G+C content of 64.26%. The detection of the antibiotic resistance genes erm(X), aphA1-IAB, strA-strB, and cmx is fully consistent with the previously observed multidrug-resistant pattern of C. imitans isolates.

Acquired bone marrow failure can result after infections caused by viruses, exposure to toxins, or chemicals. Majority of acquired cases of marrow failure labeled as "idiopathic" are probably immune mediated through activated T-cells and cytokines. We observed pancytopenia in the second week, after pharyngeal diphtheria in a 14-year-old child. Bone marrow examination showed reduced marrow precursors affecting all 3 cell lines. There are no clinical cases of myelosuppression reported in diphtheria infection and this is probably the first reported case of bone marrow failure after diphtheria inf

Diphtheria is under control in industrialized countries. However, single cases and outbreaks still occur and the disease is not completely understood. Forty-three individuals suspected of having diphtheria who were referred to the Infectious Disease Hospital of Arkhangelsk from December 1994 to March 1995 were included in this study. Fifteen patients were diagnosed as having diphtheria and received equine hyperimmune antidiphtheria toxin antiserum, and 28 were diagnosed as carriers, 12 with nondiphtherial tonsillitis or pharyngitis and 16 without symptoms. Serum samples were obtained on admiss

This study analysed the number of patients admitted with diphtheria to a teaching hospital in the state of Assam in India over a period of five years and compared the disease characteristics and management with outcomes and incidences of diphtheria reported in the literature. It was a retrospective analysis of data elicited from clinical records of patients admitted to hospital. A total of 101 admissions were recorded during a five-year period between March 1997 to March 2002, mostly with pharyngeal diphtheria (90 per cent). The majority of patients had no history of immunization (70 per cent)

In 1994-1996, the Republic of Moldova was stricken with an epidemic of diphtheria after >30 years of routine diphtheria immunization and the near absence of the disease for nearly 20 years. The intensity of the epidemic gradually grew, reaching a peak in 1994-1995. The epidemiology of diphtheria in Moldova during this period is described along with laboratory findings and control measures. Pharyngeal diphtheria was the predominant clinical form of the disease (97% of cases), and it most often developed in a localized form (70%), with 20% in the toxic form. The clinical diagnosis of diphtheria

A 5-month-old boy of a Romanian family traveling via Ukraine to Poland developed a respiratory disease that resembled and that was initially diagnosed as pharyngeal diphtheria. The child recovered after treatment with antidiphtheria antitoxin. A coryneform bacterium had been isolated from a nasopharyngeal specimen from the child and was initially identified as an atypical Corynebacterium diphtheriae strain. Seven adults who had contact with either the child or an adult contact person also developed symptoms of pharyngeal diphtheria, were also treated with antitoxin, and recovered uneventfully.

We report the case of a 32-year-old woman who presented upon returning from India with cutaneous ulcers on the feet and pharyngitis. Microbiological testing showed the causative organism to be a toxigenic strain of Corynebacterium diphtheriae. She was treated successfully with penicillin and diphtheria antitoxin. This case emphasises the importance of maintaining a high index of suspicion for such rare but significant infectious diseases.

A seven week old infant developed pharyngeal diphtheria. The child quickly deteriorated with severe dyspnea and bradycardia. These symptoms made endotracheal intubation necessary. The pharynx and the larynx were covered with pseudomembranes. At the fourth day of hospital stay antitoxin has been administrated. At first the condition of the child became much better. Then progredient paralysis of the diaphragm occurred and led again to intubation. The neurologic complications resolved completely. Diphtheria--above all in an infant--is a rare disease. Our report shows, that it has to be kept in mi

A case of pharyngeal diphtheria with mild course was observed in a man aged 21 years who had had received four vaccinations. This was the first case of this disease in Poland since 1983, and the possibility is discussed of diphtheria spread in a country with widespread Di-Per-Te vaccinations, as pointed out in the present literature.
