Sea-blue histiocyte syndrome with cutaneous involvement. Case report with ultrastructural findings.

A patient with infiltration of the skin resulting in eyelid swelling and facial nodules was recognized as a case of sea-blue histiocyte syndrome with cutaneous involvement. Typical sea-blue histiocytes were found in the skin and confirmation was provided by electron microscopy. Hepatosplenomegaly, lung infiltrates and bone marrow involvement were the other symptoms. The relationship between sea-blue histiocyte syndrome and adult Niemann-Pick disease is also discussed.

Hemophagocytic syndrome complicating T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia with a novel t(11;14)(p15;q11) chromosome translocation.

A case of hemophagocytic syndrome that developed in a patient with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) with a novel chromosome translocation involving 14q11 is reported. A 15-year-old boy with T-cell ALL in relapse showed leukemic cells with an abnormal karyotype of 46,XY,-15,t(11;14)(p15;q11), +der(15)t(15;?)(p11;?). Pancytopenia and extensive hemophagocytosis by macrophages in the bone marrow were observed after reinduction chemotherapy and again at the terminal stage. At autopsy, infiltration of such cells was also found in other organs. The findings suggested occurrence of hemophagoc

Pathology of Langerhans cell histiocytosis.

The spectrum of the histopathology of Langerhans cell histiocytosis was presented with special attention paid to the pathologic Langerhans cell as the diagnostic lesional cell. Features that distinguish this histiocyte from others are defined by electron microscopic demonstration of Birbeck granules and by immunohistochemical characteristics such as possession of antigenic determinant(s) that react with the monoclonal antibody T6. The relationship between Langerhans cells and the other histiocytes from which they are derived seems to be determined by events initiated by surface antigens reacti

Sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy (Destombes-Rosai-Dorfman syndrome) occurring as a single enlarged submandibular lymph node: a light and immunohistochemical study with review of the literature.

Sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy (SHML) is primarily a disease of children and young adults in which there is a pronounced and persistent cervical lymph node enlargement that usually is bilateral and is accompanied by fever. The histology, which varies according to the stage of the disease, is characterized by an exuberant intrasinusoidal histiocytic proliferation. The present case involves a 4-year-old girl who had several episodes of upper respiratory infection and otitis media; subsequently, a walnut-sized enlargement developed in the left anterior portion of the neck. [Hemophagocytic syndrome associated with herpes simplex virus. Apropos of a case with a fatal outcome].

A male patient, aged 23 years, with no notable previous history, was admitted to hospital because of fever, splenomegaly, and pancytopenia. The bone marrow was infiltrated by mature looking histiocytes displaying erythrophagocytosis. Other findings included polyclonal hypergammaglobulinemia, elevated transaminases, hypofibrinogenemia, and hypertriglyceridemia. A diagnosis of virus-associated hemophagocytic syndrome was made and virology studies attributed it to herpes simplex virus type 1. Therapy with acyclovir, high dose i.v. immunoglobulins, and vinblastine was unsuccessful. With the additi

Urinary sialic acid screening in neurologic disorders.

Urine sialic acid was measured in 246 patients evaluated for possible neurodegenerative disorders. Total, free, and bound sialic acid excretion declined significantly with patients' ages. Among 11 patients (4.5%) with age-related excretion rates greater than 2 standard deviations above the mean, 5 had the following disorders: free sialic acid storage disease, mucolipidosis type II, pseudohypoparathyroidism, sinus histiocytosis, and probable Sanfilippo syndrome. Although the remaining 6 were undiagnosed, 2 exhibited deteriorating courses and the other 4 presented variable combinations of organo

Tuberculosis-associated hemophagocytic syndrome. A systemic process.

Virus-associated hemophagocytic syndrome has been recently identified as a benign, reactive histiocytic proliferation distinct from Rappaport's malignant hystiocytosis. Other etiologic agents, including different bacteria, have also been identified. Three autopsy cases of hemophagocytic syndrome associated to acute tuberculous sepsis are presented. Benign histiocytic proliferation with striking hemophagocytosis was present in a disseminated, multisystemic pattern in all three cases. A relationship between systemic histiocytic proliferation and an anergic status in these patients is suggested.

Feline dental disease.

Periodontal disease and chronic gingivitis/stomatitis are the most common feline dental diseases. With routine dental care and increased emphasis on home oral hygiene, these diseases can be controlled. Cats can be seen with a number of other dental disorders, and improved treatment methods such as restorations of early subgingival resorptive lesions, endodontic therapy, and orthodontic therapy can be performed successfully. More study and research are necessary about the gingivitis/stomatitis syndrome and subgingival resorptive lesions so that improved prevention and treatment recommendations

Mediastinal germ cell tumour associated with malignant histiocytosis and high rubella titres.

Two further cases of a haematological malignancy are reported in patients with mediastinal germ cell tumours. Two young men developed bone marrow infiltration with histiocytes showing erythrophagocytosis shortly after subtotal excision of a malignant teratoma of the anterior mediastinum. Serial viral titres showed a rise in rubella antibody titres by haemoagglutination inhibition in both cases, antirubella IgG (ELISA) in one case and rubella RH zone in the other, in the absence of detectable IgM rubella antibodies. In case 1 a diagnosis of virus associated haemophagocytic syndrome was made and

[Histiocytosis X. 3 different cases: eosinophilic granuloma, Hand-Schueller-Christian disease, Abt-Letterer-Siwe disease].

The authors present three different cases of histiocytosis X: the eosinophilic granuloma, the Hand-Schuller-Christian syndrome and the Letterer-Siwe syndrome. As it appears in the main articles concerning this argument, the Aa. emphasize the common features belonging to the three different forms of histiocytosis: the involvement of the bones and of other tissues. Moreover the prognosis is defined as good in the first case, uncertain in the second case and severe in the third.

Hemophagocytosis simulating malignant histiocytosis: a terminal event of the myelodysplastic syndrome.

We describe a patient with hemophagocytic syndrome resembling malignant histiocytosis which was complicating myelodysplastic disease of 3 years duration. Detailed morphological and ultrastructural studies indicate that the histiocytic component did not demonstrate features of malignancy. A review of other known malignancies ending up in the hemophagocytic syndrome is given, and the significance of this syndrome is discussed.

Reactive hemophagocytic syndrome.

Two cases of reactive hemophagocytic syndrome (RHS) are reported, and the clinical and pathological features are compared with other histiocytic proliferative disorders, including familial hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (FHL) and malignant histiocytosis. RHS can be associated with a variety of infections, including viral, bacterial, fungal, and parasitic. RHS may also be familial as exemplified by our 2 cases in siblings. The isolation of an effective agent appears to be the only criterion by which a diagnosis of RHS can be made.

[Hypothalamic histiocytosis X--report of a case].

Histiocytosis X is a non-neoplastic disorder of unknown etiology characterized by a mass of proliferating histocytes, plasma cells and inflammatory cells forming a granuloma within the reticuloendothelial elements of any organ system in the body. The three clinical syndromes of this condition, eosinophilic granuloma, Hand-Schüller-Christian disease and Letterer-Siwe disease were unified into a single nosological entity by Lichtenstein in 1953. The complication of the central nervous system is shown in the cerebrum, cerebellum, sella turcica, hypothalamus and so on. Hypothalamic histiocytosis X

[Self-healing childhood histiocytosis X (Illig-Fanconi disease). Comments on ultrastructural aspects and etiopathogenic classification of histiocytosis].

Two cases of cutaneous self-healing histiocytosis X in a 6 and a 16 months-old children, are reported. Clinically, the lesions were characterized by few, small, translucent and confluent papules, sometimes purpuric. The scalp lesions were seborrheic eczema-like; the elements on the groins were erosive. Systemic examinations, laboratory data and general development were completely normal. The histological pattern, in both cases, were identical of that in histiocytosis X (atypic mononuclear cells with glassy eosinophilic cytoplasm and excentric kidney-shaped nucleus). [Haemophagocytic sinus histiocytosis or Destombes-Rosai-Dorfman syndrome (author's transl)].

Haemophagocytic sinus histiocytosis usually presents as cervical lymphadenopathy developing in a context of severe inflammatory reaction. The lymph nodes contain numerous large cytophagic histiocytes capable of absorbing all kinds of blood cells, and diffuse plasmocytic infiltrates. Other organs may be involved, notably the skin and bones, as in the case presented here. The course of the disease if prolonged, irrespective of the treatment administered.

Metabolic tapetoretinal degenerations.

There are a number of metabolic diseases which cause tapetoretinal degeneration, suggesting that pure pigmentary retinopathy may also be metabolic in nature. On the other hand tapetoretinal degenerations may have various modes of inheritance, so we may conclude that the metabolic disorder at the basis of these diseases is not unique and that tapetoretinal degenerations are heterogenic. In this article, some 450 published reports on tapetoretinal degenerations are reviewed. Based on these reports, the clinical and ocular manifestations, laboratory and histopathological findings, inheritance pat

Studies of intestinal lymphoid tissue. IV--The predictive value of raised mitotic indices among jejunal epithelial lymphocytes in the diagnosis of gluten-sensitive enteropathy.

It has been established that considerable blast-transformation and mitotic activity occurs among epithelial lymphocytes of untreated coeliac mucosa. This paper is concerned solely with the proliferative activity of epithelial lymphocytes (expressed as percentage "mitotic index") in the prospective diagnosis of coeliac disease, in comparison with other conditions such as lymphoma. Crohn's disease and immunodeficiency which are often associated with malabsorption and flattening of jejunal mucosa. The results demonstrate that a high mitotic index (greater than 0.2%) clearly distinguishes, and hen

Hyperapobetalipoproteinaemia in two families with xanthomas and phytosterolaemia.

The death of a 13-year-old boy from coronary atherosclerosis prompted the study of an Amish family. Five of his twelve sibs had tendon and tuberous xanthomas, and increased plasma plant sterols, particularly beta-sitosterol. The plasma level of the major apoprotein of low density lipoprotein (LDL), the B protein, was very high (mean 173 mg/dl) in these five sibs, while the LDL cholesterol level was moderately increased (209 mg/dl). Four other sibs and both parents had an increased LDL B protein level with a normal or mildly raised plasma total and LDL cholesterol level (hyperapobeta-lipoprotei

Cytophagic histiocytic panniculitis with fever, cytopenia, liver failure, and terminal hemorrhagic diathesis.

We have seen five adult patients with a clinical picture of recurrent histiocytic, cytophagic panniculitis, cytopenia, abnormal liver function tests, and a terminal, febrile bleeding diathesis. Originally thought to have Weber-Christian disease, these patients, we believe, represent a unique syndrome: lobular, histiocytic, cytophagic panniculitis. Erythrophagocytosis and cytophagocytosis are readily observed, but the cells do not show malignant features. Histiocytosis can be found at times in the bone marrow, lymph nodes, liver, spleen, and serosal tissues, as well as in the skin and subcutane
