Canine leishmaniosis caused by Leishmania infantum commonly induces marked dysproteinemia, yet restricted or apparently monoclonal gammopathies may complicate interpretation of serum protein electrophoresis (SPE). This study characterized SPE and immunofixation findings in 38 clinically sick dogs with confirmed canine leishmaniosis and evaluated interobserver agreement in gammopathy classification. SPE and immunofixation using anti-human reagents was performed on serum from 38 sick dogs with confirmed clinical leishmaniosis and without evidence of plasma cell neoplasia. The SPE data alone and

BACKGROUND: Pregnant women and young children bear the highest burden of malaria morbidity/mortality. While transplacental transfer of malaria antibodies protects the child, the efficiency varies by antigen and maternal factors. This systematic review assessed transplacental transfer of malaria antibodies, factors associated with reduced transfer and identified knowledge gaps for future research.
METHOD: We searched PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and HINARI from the inception of databases until January 2025. We included published articles reporting anti-malaria antibodies in the mother and ne

Toxoplasma gondii infection in cats is mostly subclinical. Systemic disease usually occurs in immunocompromised individuals. This report describes an unusual systemic toxoplasmosis, presenting as parasitic arthritis in an adult 14-year-old neutered male indoor domestic shorthair cat, with no identifiable cause of immunosuppression, and referred for lethargy, anorexia, and fever. Laboratory abnormalities included non-regenerative anemia, thrombocytopenia, increased serum amyloid A concentration, and polyclonal hypergammaglobulinemia. With persistent discomfort on palpation of the pelvic region

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Autoimmune Polyendocrinopathy with Candidiasis and Ectodermal Dystrophy is an extremely rare autosomal recessive disorder caused by inborn errors of immunity. It is due to a loss-of-function mutation in the AIRE autoimmune regulator gene. Its manifestations include autoimmunity affecting endocrine glands, in addition to non-endocrine manifestations including dental enamel hypoplasia, alopecia areata, hepatitis, and chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis. Globally, 10 cases per million are affected by this condition, with higher incidence in highly consanguineous populations.

A 7.5-year-old boy with one month of persistent jaundice was found to have elevated transaminases, hypergammaglobulinemia, negative viral hepatitis markers, normal ceruloplasmin and 24-hour urinary copper levels. Antinuclear antibody and p-ANCA were positive. Magnetic resonance cholangiography showed normal intra and extrahepatic bile ducts, and inflammatory bowel disease screening was negative. Liver biopsy revealed interface hepatitis with portal lymphoplasmacytic infiltrates and bridging fibrosis. Interlobular bile ducts showed mucinous metaplasia, consistent with chronic bile duct injury.

Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a chronic immune-mediated liver disease diagnosed by the clustering of compatible biochemical, serological, and histological features after exclusion of competing causes. Concurrent biliary obstruction or drug-induced injury can obscure the underlying autoimmune process and misdirect the initial diagnosis toward a purely obstructive or toxic cause. A 65-year-old woman with a remote cholecystectomy presented with one week of painless jaundice, dark urine, fatigue, and pruritus on a background of a year of slowly progressive aminotransferase elevation. She had also

We previously reported that Sildenafil enhances apoptosis and antitumor efficacy of doxorubicin (DOX) while attenuating its cardiotoxic effect in prostate cancer. In the present study, we investigated the mechanism by which sildenafil sensitizes DOX in killing of prostate cancer (PCa) cells, DU145. The death receptor Fas (APO-1 or CD95) induces apoptosis in many carcinoma cells, which is negatively regulated by anti-apoptotic molecules such as FLIP (Fas-associated death domain (FADD) interleukin-1-converting enzyme (FLICE)-like inhibitory protein). Co-treatment of PCa cells with sildenafil and

Background. Unlike full reading, 'skim-reading' involves the process of looking quickly over information in an attempt to cover more material whilst still being able to retain a superficial view of the underlying content. Within this work, we specifically emulate this natural human activity by providing a dynamic graph-based view of entities automatically extracted from text. For the extraction, we use shallow parsing, co-occurrence analysis and semantic similarity computation techniques. Our main motivation is to assist biomedical researchers and clinicians in coping with increasingly large a

BACKGROUND: Monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) and multiple myeloma (MM) are reported to occur more frequently in Black populations, particularly African Americans. However, despite Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) being home to the largest Black population globally, epidemiological data on MGUS and MM in the region remain scarce.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of published studies from SSA to estimate the pooled prevalence of MGUS and MM, regional variations, survival outcomes and key clinical complications, including HIV-associated MM, renal failu

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) remains a major opportunistic pathogen in individuals with HIV. The aim of this study was to investigate the seroprevalence and reactivation rates of CMV among HIV-positive individuals. A total of 300 people with HIV presenting to the Istanbul Faculty of Medicine were enrolled. Serological assessments were performed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), while molecular analyses were conducted through PCR-based methods. Sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of the patients were also evaluated. Of the participants, 90% were male, with an age range of 18-7

BACKGROUND: Accurate identification of recent hepatitis E virus (HEV) and Toxoplasma gondii infections during pregnancy is essential for clinical management, yet diagnostic performance data in HIV-positive populations remain limited. We evaluated serological and molecular diagnostic approaches for detecting recent coinfection across gestation.
METHODS: In a prospective cohort of 780 HIV-positive pregnant women (CD4 + 200-400 cells/µL) in central Nigeria, we performed serial HEV and T. gondii IgG/IgM testing using recomLine immunoblot assays. A validation subset (n = 80) underwent HEV RNA dete

Prenylopathies such as mevalonate kinase deficiency (MKD) are an emerging family of monogenic autoinflammatory diseases with an underlying defect in isoprenoid lipid synthesis and protein prenylation. The mechanisms linking defective protein prenylation to systemic inflammation remain unclear. We revealed that mice and humans with MKD had significant decreases in the frequency of mature natural killer (NK) cells, impaired trafficking of cytolytic granules, reduced cytotoxic activity, and increased production of the cytokine interferon γ (IFN-γ). Mice with MKD failed to clear murine cytomegalov

BACKGROUND/AIM: Toxoplasma gondii is an important opportunistic pathogen in people living with HIV (PLWH), and the risk of reactivation increases markedly when CD4 counts fall below 100/mm³ . We aimed to determine T. gondii seroprevalence in PLWH, assess its associations with demographic and clinical variables, and emphasize preventive strategies for seronegative individuals.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort study analyzed data from 1419 people living with HIV who were diagnosed by Western blot and followed at a tertiary care center between January 2006 and January 2024.Demogr

Bronchiectasis is a chronic inflammatory lung disease characterized by permanent airway dilation, mucus production, recurrent infections, and progressive structural injury. Inborn errors of immunity (IEIs), particularly predominantly antibody deficiencies (PADs), are important and potentially under-recognized causes of non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis (NCFB). Antibody deficiency increases susceptibility to bacterial infection, but the observation that bronchiectasis develops in only a subset of patients with PADs, and may develop despite immunoglobulin replacement therapy (IGRT), indicates t

The aetiology of polyclonal hypergammaglobulinaemia affecting one or more immunoglobulin (Ig) classes has not been well defined in paediatrics, with previous studies focusing on adults or single Ig classes. We retrospectively analysed the clinical diagnoses in 2,251 patients from paediatric in-patients with significantly elevated (>2 standard deviations above age mean) IgG, IgA and/or IgM levels. Non-iatrogenic elevated Ig was found in 121 (5.4%) patients. Isolated high IgG, IgA and IgM occurred in 37%, 32% and 11% of cases, respectively, with multiple class elevation in 20%. Infection was the

INTRODUCTION: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection predisposes patients to opportunistic infections. Kaposi sarcoma (KS) is a soft tissue sarcoma caused by human herpesvirus-8 (HHV8). Patients with high HHV8 and HIV viremia can develop KS inflammatory cytokine storm (KICS), a rare condition characterized by severe sepsis-like symptoms and high mortality.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a patient with poorly controlled HIV and 2 weeks of fevers, dyspnea, abdominal pain, weight loss, and tender umbilicated plaques on the face, trunk, and extremities. Along with HIV, concomitant infections

BACKGROUND: Hansen's disease is a chronic infectious disease caused commonly by Mycobacterium leprae. Although it is rare in Europe, sporadic cases occur due to migration from endemic areas. In Portugal there are 4 cases reported in 2023 and 4 cases reported in 2024. Lepromatous leprosy represents the anergic pole of the disease spectrum, characterized by diffuse bacillary proliferation and multisystem involvement, often mimicking autoimmune conditions.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 36-year-old Brazilian male from Rio de Janeiro living in Portugal presented with recurrent painless leg ulcers and viola
