Ileal duplication cyst presenting with recurrent abdominal pain and postoperative Salmonella bacteremia: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Duplication cysts are benign congenital anomalies of the gastrointestinal tract. Most manifest with symptoms within the first two years of life, and the majority are diagnosed in children (1). The clinical manifestations of duplication cysts vary depending on their location, size, and the presence of heterotopic mucosa. The most common location for these cysts is the ileum, although they can also occur in the stomach, duodenum, jejunum, colon, and rectum (2). Complications such as volvulus, intussusception, recurrent hemorrhage, and malignant degeneration have been reported (3). De

Safety and immunogenicity of a conjugate vaccine candidate against Salmonella enterica serovars Typhi and Paratyphi A in healthy adults in Europe: a phase 1 randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Enteric fever caused by Salmonella enterica serovars Typhi and Paratyphi A remains a major concern. No vaccines are licensed against Salmonella Paratyphi A. We aimed to assess the safety and immunogenicity of an investigational conjugate vaccine against Salmonella Typhi and Paratyphi A (Vi-CRM197+O:2-CRM197). METHODS: In this observer-masked, randomised, controlled, dose-escalation, single-centre, phase 1 trial done during Nov 28, 2022, to April 2, 2024, at the Centre for Evaluation of Vaccination in Belgium, healthy adults (aged 18-50 years) were randomly assigned (2:1 or 2:2:1 a

Salmonella's lost phenotype: implications of sequence-based serotyping on the characterization of lipopolysaccharide-deficient Salmonella isolates.

Salmonella serotyping is shifting from slide agglutination toward whole-genome sequencing (WGS). While WGS allows for comprehensive analyses, phenotypic information about lipopolysaccharide-deficient ("LPS-rough") isolates obtained from slide agglutination is lost. This discrepancy represents a challenge for Salmonella control in livestock because in the European Union, LPS-rough Salmonella isolated from food-producing animals that are untypable using slide agglutination alone are not subject to control measures, whereas isolates of certain serovars in certain matrices would be, when based on

Phylogeographic clustering of Salmonella enterica serovar Mississippi in the southeastern United States indicates regional transmission pathways.

Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica serovar Mississippi (S. Mississippi) is a polyphyletic serovar endemic in Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States. From 2018 to 2024, it was the 13th most frequently reported clinical Salmonella serovar in the United States. Its incidence in the United States is geographically focused within the Southeast, with 78% of US cases in that region. The objective of this study was to determine the phylogeographical patterns of clinical S. Mississippi in the southeastern United States using sequenced clinical isolate data and metadata f

Phase II multicentre double-blind randomised controlled trial of a Bivalent VaccInation against Salmonella Typhi and Paratyphi A (BiVISTA) using a controlled human infection model of paratyphoid A infection: study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Enteric fever, primarily caused by Salmonella enterica Typhi and Salmonella enterica Paratyphi A (SPA), is endemic mainly in South Asia, disproportionately affecting school-age children. Although typhoid conjugate vaccines (TCVs) are effective and implemented in many countries, no licensed vaccine exists against paratyphoid A. Bivalent vaccines targeting both S. Typhi and SPA may address this gap. Although field efficacy trials are not considered feasible, controlled human infection models (CHIMs) offer an alternative pathway for evaluating vaccine efficacy. This will be the firs

Characterization of Salmonella spp. Isolates from European Hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus) in Italy: Serotypes and Antimicrobial Susceptibility Profiles.

BACKGROUND: Wildlife is increasingly recognized as an important component in the epidemiology of zoonotic pathogens. Salmonella spp., a leading cause of foodborne disease worldwide, can circulate across human, domestic animal, and environmental interfaces. European hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus), a synanthropic species frequently inhabiting urban and peri-urban areas, may act as reservoirs or sentinels for Salmonella. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence, serotype distribution, and antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of Salmonella spp. isolated from European

Asiatic Acid Attenuates Salmonella typhimurium-Induced Neuroinflammation and Neuronal Damage by Inhibiting the TLR2/Notch and NF-κB Pathway in Microglia.

Salmonella typhimurium (S.T) infection of the central nervous system (CNS) induces severe inflammation, leading to elevated expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in microglia. This process catalyzes excessive production of nitric oxide (NO), resulting in irreversible damage to neuronal mitochondria. Asiatic acid (AA) is a small molecule with neuroprotective potential; however, its ability to counteract nerve injury induced by S.T and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we established an S.T-infected mouse model (in vivo) and an S.T-stimulated microglial mode

Colistin Resistance in Gram-Negative Bacteria: Mechanisms, Transmission, and Novel Intervention Strategies.

Multidrug resistance (MDR) in Gram-negative bacteria is a global issue and needs to be addressed urgently. MDR can emerge through genetic mutations and horizontal gene transfer and deteriorate under antibiotic selective pressure. The emergence of resistance to last-resort antibiotics, which are used to treat MDR bacteria, is of particular concern. Colistin has been recognized as a last-line antibiotic for the treatment of MDR Gram-negative bacterial infections caused by Escherichia coli, Acinetobacter baumannii, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Recently, the increasing report

The Predatory Bacteria Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus LR3: A Potential Biocontrol Agent Against Gram-Negative Pathogenic Microorganisms.

The paper describes a predatory Gram-negative bacterium from the genus Bdellovibrio, which was isolated from water of the Lyubozhikha River. As revealed by electron microscopy, the bacterium is an intracellular predator of Gram-negative microorganisms. Its prey range includes Pseudomonas tolaasii, the phytopathogen responsible for brown spot disease in the cultivated button mushroom (Agaricus bisporus). Based on the results of a 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, the bacterium was identified as Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus strain LR3. We characterized the predator-prey dynamics between B. bacterio

Evaluating the Immunogenicity and Protective Efficacy of a Novel Vaccine Candidate Against Salmonella in Poultry.

Background: Non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) is a major foodborne pathogen, with poultry products, especially eggs, being the primary source of human infections. Current serovar-specific poultry vaccines effectively reduce targeted Salmonella serovars but may inadvertently promote the emergence of untargeted serovars within poultry flocks. Therefore, novel vaccine candidates providing broad cross-serovar protection are needed to improve overall effectiveness of Salmonella control programs. Objectives: This study evaluated the immunogenicity of the novel subunit vaccine candidate InvG and assesse

Harnessing apidaecin capability to improve intestinal health and inhibit Salmonella Typhimurium transmission in laying hens.

Apidaecin (Api), an antimicrobial peptide, exhibits in vitro efficacy against Salmonella Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium) and enhances broiler growth performance via modulation of intestinal barrier function. This study evaluated the effects of dietary apidaecin on intestinal health in laying hens and its potential to mitigate S. Typhimurium infection and egg contamination. A total of 288 Hy-Line grey layers (45-wk-old) were randomly allocated to 4 dietary treatments (6 replicates per treatment, 12 birds per replicate). Basal diet supplemented with 0 (Con), 300 (Api300), 500 (Api500), or 700 (Api7

Too Hot, Too Wet: Bayesian Spatial Modeling of Climate-Driven Salmonella Risk in New South Wales, Australia, 1991-2022.

Salmonella infections contribute significantly to gastrointestinal-related hospitalisations in Australia and remain a major global public health concern. Although seasonal patterns in Salmonella incidence have been documented globally, there is limited evidence on the influence of climatic factors, particularly rainfall, humidity, flooding, and temperature, in the Australian context. This study investigated the relationship between climatic extremes and Salmonella infections across Local Health Districts (LHDs) in New South Wales (NSW), Australia, using a Spatial Bayesian Distributed Lag Non-L

Antimicrobial peptides isolated from probiotics as an alternative to antibiotics against Salmonella infection.

UNLABELLED: Non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) is the leading cause of deaths associated with foodborne illnesses in the United States. NTS is primarily transmitted in humans through the consumption of contaminated poultry and poultry products. Antibiotics and vaccines are used to control Salmonella infection in poultry. However, the evolution of antibiotic-resistant Salmonella and the lack of cross-protection by vaccines necessitate the development of novel antimicrobials for Salmonella infection. Antimicrobial peptides are considered viable alternatives due to the reduced propensity for resistan

Sources of Salmonella infection in pigs in the Netherlands: Epidemiological risk factors and subtyping-based source attribution.

Effective Salmonella control in pigs requires understanding how the pathogen is introduced and spreads on farms. This study aimed to identify potential sources of Salmonella infection in pigs using both epidemiological and microbiological methods. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 148 fattening pig farms in the Netherlands. Porcine fecal samples were collected and tested for the presence of Salmonella, and a questionnaire on farm characteristics was completed. Risk factors significantly associated with Salmonella presence at farm-level were identified through logistic regression analysi

Exploring barriers to and motivations for vaccine uptake in a typhoid vaccine trial in Vellore, South India: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Typhoid poses a significant challenge in India, which has one of the highest burdens of the disease globally, making the implementation of cost-effective vaccination strategies essential. The success of typhoid vaccination, whether through clinical trials or large-scale public health programmes, depends on community acceptance. In the post-COVID-19 period, vaccine hesitancy and scepticism have emerged as key challenges to both vaccine trials and mass vaccination efforts. This study examines the barriers to and motivations for vaccine uptake during a mass vaccination campaign. METHO

HTS-based control of Salmonella Enteritidis vaccines for chickens - pilot study.

Salmonella vaccines constitute the largest group of antibacterial immunological veterinary medicinal products (IVMPs) introduced to the EU market by the Polish Official Medicines Control Laboratory (OMCL). This is especially relevant, as Poland is the EU's leading producer of poultry meat. The General European OMCL Network is coordinated by the European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines & HealthCare (EDQM). Despite strict control of IVMPs, genomic aspect has not yet been controlled in veterinary pharmacy. The aim of the project was to assess the usefulness of High-throughput sequencing
