Better Existing Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Can Reduce the Risk of Cholera in an Endemic Setting: Results From a Prospective Cohort Study From Kolkata, India.

BACKGROUND: Global cholera control efforts rely heavily on effective water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) interventions in cholera-endemic settings. METHODS: Using data from a large, randomized controlled trial of oral cholera vaccine conducted in Kolkata, India, we evaluated whether natural variations in WASH in an urban slum setting were predictive of cholera risk. From the control population (n = 55 086), baseline WASH data from a randomly selected "training subpopulation" (n = 27 634) were analyzed with recursive partitioning to develop a dichotomous ("better" vs "not better") composite

Vaccine and malnutrition: A narrative review.

Nearly 45% of under 5 mortality is directly or indirectly linked to malnutrition. Infection adds to the increased mortality and morbidity in these groups. Vaccination is very important in these undernourished children protecting against life-threatening infections. The goal of vaccination is to produce long-term protection by generating memory cells and the generation of antibodies. Since malnutrition is a state of immunodeficiency, the immune response to vaccines in these children is a matter of concern. We did an exhaustive search to gather more recent studies and corroborated previous findi

The Chronic Cholera Situation in Africa: Why Are African Countries Unable to Tame the Well-Known Lion?

Seven years to the Global Taskforce on Cholera Control's target of reducing cholera cases and deaths by 90% by 2030, Africa continues to experience a high incidence of the disease. In the last 20 years, more than 2.6 million cases and 60 000 deaths of the disease have been recorded, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa. Case Fatality Ratio remains consistently above the WHO-recommended 1% with a yearly average of 2.2%. Between 1 January 2022 and 16 July 2023, fourteen African countries reported 213 443 cases and 3951 deaths (CFR, 1.9%) of the disease. In this perspective article, based on available li

Rapid method for detection of Vibrio cholerae from drinking water with nanomaterials enhancing electrochemical biosensor.

Cholera is a potentially fatal diarrheal disease caused by Vibrio cholerae and is spread to humans from contaminated food and water. In order to prevent spread of epidemic chlorea, the development of novel sensitive, selective, user-friendly, cost-effective and rapid detection systems to detect of V. cholerae are necessary. Therefore, in this study, it was aimed to develop a specific, electrochemical immunoassay with high selectivitiy and sensitivity for detection of V. cholerae from drinking water using in house synthesized Gold Nanoparticles (AuNPs). The synthesized AuNPs were characterized

Zinc Deficiency And sTNF-RII Are Associated With Worse COVID-19 Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Zinc (Zn) is known for its substantial involvement in the immune response as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent. Zn plasma levels' clinical significance in coronavirus disease (COVID) diagnosis is not yet fully established. OBJECTIVE: We assessed the association between Zn deficiency, gut integrity, inflammation, and COVID-19 outcomes. METHODS: A prospective observational cohort in which plasma Zn, soluble tumor necrosis factor alpha receptor II (sTNF-RII) intestinal fatty-acid binding protein (IFABP; marker of intestinal integrity), and zonulin levels (intestinal permeab

The postnatal development of retinal projections in strepsirrhine galagos (Otolemur garnettii).

Here, we describe the postnatal development of retinal projections in galagos. Galagos are of special interest as they represent the understudied strepsirrhine branch (galagos, pottos, lorises, and lemurs) of the primate radiations. The projections of both eyes were revealed in each galago by injecting red or green cholera toxin subunit B (CTB) tracers into different eyes of galagos ranging from postnatal day 5 to adult. In the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus, the magnocellular, parvocellular, and koniocellular layers were clearly labeled and identified by having inputs from the ipsilateral

International health regulations and pre-travel health practices of international travelers at Nigerian airport: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: International Health Regulations (IHR) were developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) to curb the trans-border spread of epidemics. To our knowledge, no airport-based studies have assessed travelers' health practices against a combination of diseases subject to IHR 2005. Therefore, we aimed to generate and describe the baseline travelers' pre-travel health practices towards Cholera, Yellow Fever (YF), and Plague at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Nigeria. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was employed to collect data from 486 international travelers using a

Region-specific response of central microglial cells to sciatic nerve demyelination through sensory and motor pathways.

Peripheral nerve injury can cause changes in microglial cells on the spinal dorsal and ventral horns. This region-specific response implies that central microglial cells could be activated through both sensory and motor pathways. In order to further determine how peripheral nerve injury activates central microglial cells through neural pathways, the sciatic nerve was selected as the target for neural tract tracing and demyelination. Firstly, we used cholera toxin subunit B (CTB) to map the central sensory and motor territories of the sciatic nerve. Secondly, we applied lysophosphatidylcholine

Global Hopf bifurcation of a cholera model with media coverage.

We propose a model for cholera under the impact of delayed mass media, including human-to-human and environment-to-human transmission routes. First, we establish the extinction and uniform persistence of the disease with respect to the basic reproduction number. Then, we conduct a local and global Hopf bifurcation analysis by treating the delay as a bifurcation parameter. Finally, we carry out numerical simulations to demonstrate theoretical results. The impact of the media with the time delay is found to not influence the threshold dynamics of the model, but is a factor that induces periodic

Phylogenetic analyses of Chilomastix and Retortamonas species using in vitro excysted flagellates.

In vitro excystation of cysts of microscopically identified Chilomastix mesnili and Retortamonas sp. isolated from Japanese macaques and Retortamonas sp. isolated from small Indian mongooses could be induced using an established protocol for Giardia intestinalis and subsequently by culturing with H2S-rich Robinson's medium supplemented with Desulfovibrio desulfuricans. Excystation usually began 2 h after incubation in Robinson's medium. DNA was isolated from excysted flagellates after 4 h of incubation or from cultured excysted flagellates. Phylogenetic analysis based on their 18S rRNA genes r

Excess mortality in northern Haiti during the 2010 cholera epidemic.

In the course of infectious disease outbreaks, barriers to accessing health care can contribute to preventable mortality. According to the Ministry of Health of Haiti (Ministère de la Santé Publique et de la Population [MSPP]), the 2010 cholera epidemic caused 7,936 deaths from October 2010 to December 2012 in Haiti alone. We seek to quantify the excess mortality attributable to patients not seeking care during the cholera outbreak in the Nord Department in 2010-2012. Using data from a community-based retrospective survey conducted by Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières [MSF]) in

Long-lasting household damage from Cyclone Idai increases malaria risk in rural western Mozambique.

Cyclone Idai in 2019 was one of the worst tropical cyclones recorded in the Southern Hemisphere. The storm caused catastrophic damage and led to a humanitarian crisis in Mozambique. The affected population suffered a cholera epidemic on top of housing and infrastructure damage and loss of life. The housing and infrastructure damage sustained during Cyclone Idai still has not been addressed in all affected communities. This is of grave concern because storm damage results in poor housing conditions which are known to increase the risk of malaria. Mozambique has the 4th highest malaria prevalenc

Comparative study on Antibacterial efficacy of a series of chromone sulfonamide derivatives against drug-resistant and MDR-isolates.

Sulfonamide derivatives have numerous pharmaceutical applications having antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, antimalarial, anticancer, and antidepressant activities. The structural flexibility of sulfonamide derivatives makes them an excellent candidate for the development of new multi-target agents, although long-time exposure to sulfonamide drugs results in many toxic impacts on human health. However, sulfonamides may be functionalized for developing less toxic and more competent drugs. In this work, sulfonamides including Sulfapyridine (a), Sulfathiazole (b), Sulfamethoxazole (c), and Sul

Global burden of vaccine-associated anaphylaxis and their related vaccines, 1967-2023: A comprehensive analysis of the international pharmacovigilance database.

BACKGROUND: Vaccine-associated anaphylaxis is a rare but life-threatening reaction that occurs within minutes to hours of exposure to allergens. As studies utilizing large-scale data to investigate this topic are limited, further research is needed to assess its burden, long-term trends, and associated risk factors so as to gain a comprehensive understanding of vaccine-associated anaphylaxis globally. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the global burden of vaccine-associated anaphylaxis and related vaccines. METHOD: This study utilized the World Health Organization International Pharm

Editorial: Pandemics Interact With and Amplify Child Mental Health Disparities: Further Lessons From COVID-19.

Infectious diseases change our world. It is a simple understanding that history has consistently shown but it is a set of lessons that are routinely forgotten. From cholera1 to smallpox,2 pandemics amplify and run along societal fractures that form in the context of disparities. As of early September 2023, COVID-19 had caused nearly 7 million deaths worldwide, and there have been over 1.1 million deaths in the United States.3 The scale of this impact on children and families is only beginning to become clear.
