Trends in Gastrointestinal Infections during the COVID-19 Pandemic and Concerns of Post-Pandemic Resurgence in Japan.

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic was very broad and substantial, affecting a variety of fields worldwide. In Japan, the infection began spreading in March 2020. At that time, the government alerted people to cancel overseas travel, and encouraged wearing of masks, handwashing, sanitizing and keeping social distance. We sought to determine how COVID-19 infections affected other infectious diseases by investigating the trends in seven gastrointestinal infections that are listed among the 77 important infectious diseases designated by the National Institute of Infectious Diseases. We compared

Design and computational analysis of an effective multi-epitope vaccine candidate using subunit B of cholera toxin as a build-in adjuvant against urinary tract infections.

INTRODUCTION: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most common infections, usually caused by uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC). However, antibiotics are a usual treatment for UTIs; because of increasing antibiotic-resistant strains, vaccination can be beneficial in controlling UTIs. Using immunoinformatics techniques is an effective and rapid way for vaccine development. METHODS: Three conserved protective antigens (FdeC, Hma, and UpaB) were selected to develop a novel multi-epitope vaccine consisting of subunit B of cholera toxin (CTB) as a mucosal build-in adjuvant to enhance the

Disaster after disaster: the outbreak of infectious diseases in Pakistan in the wake of 2022 floods.

In June 2022, Pakistan witnessed catastrophic floods, affecting millions of people. The ensuing epidemics of cholera, cryptosporidiosis, rotavirus infections, generalized diarrhoea, typhoid and paratyphoid fevers, as well as the frequency of vector-borne diseases including malaria and dengue fever, are studied in this investigation. It also explores the latest outbreak of poliomyelitis and the frequency of respiratory diseases such COVID-19, diphtheria, and tuberculosis, as well as how floods have contributed to skin and eye problems. The report also describes the obstacles governments must ov

Quercetin counteracts monosodium glutamate to mitigate immunosuppression in the thymus and spleen via redox-guided cellular signaling.

BACKGROUND: Chronic inflammation brought on by oxidative stress can result in several immunopathologies. Natural compounds with antioxidant characteristics, like quercetin, have shown effectiveness in reducing oxidative damage and regulating the immune response. PURPOSE: The commonly used food additive monosodium glutamate (M) causes immunosuppression by disrupting redox equilibrium and inducing oxidative stress. The goal of this work is to examine the therapeutic potential of quercetin against immunotoxicity brought on by M, revealing the molecular route implicated in such immunopathology by

[Analysis of Prevention, Detection, and Response Measures of Major Infectious Diseases by Modern Chinese Seaport Quarantine Institutions: A Case Study of Modern Tianjin Seaport Quarantine].

During the late Qing Dynasty, Tianjin Customs gradually established the seaport quarantine system to prevent the spread of epidemics from Japan, Hong Kong, and the Northeast. The major infectious diseases inspected by the quarantine institution of Tianjin Port include cholera, plague, smallpox, typhus and yellow fever, of which cholera is the most frequent and influential infectious disease in modern Tianjin, followed by plague and smallpox, and no large-scale epidemics of typhus and yellow fever have been found. In the process of preventing the spreading of foreign infectious diseases, the qua

Gall Bladder Complications Resulting from Typhoid Fever in Children: Challenges of Management and Lessons Learned.

Surgical complications of typhoid fever present commonly as gut perforation and very rarely as gall bladder gangrene or gall bladder perforation. Gall bladder complications are rare in children and when they occur they are often the result of an infective condition. Occasionally, typhoid fever causes concomitant gall bladder complications and gut perforation. The coexistence of both conditions accentuates morbidity and mortality. We present two cases of typhoid fever with gall bladder perforation and gall bladder gangrene, respectively. Challenges of diagnosis and treatment are highlighted. Th

The human bile salt sodium deoxycholate induces metabolic and cell envelope changes in Salmonella Typhi leading to bile resistance.

Introduction. Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi (S. Typhi) is the etiological agent of typhoid fever. To establish an infection in the human host, this pathogen must survive the presence of bile salts in the gut and gallbladder.Hypothesis. S. Typhi uses multiple genetic elements to resist the presence of human bile.Aims. To determine the genetic elements that S. Typhi utilizes to tolerate the human bile salt sodium deoxycholate.Methodology. A collection of S. Typhi mutant strains was evaluated for their ability to growth in the presence of sodium deoxycholate and ox-bile. Additionally, transcr

Revisiting Metchnikoff's work in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Revisiting Metchnikoff's work in light of the COVID-19 pandemic illustrates how much this amazing scientist was a polymath, and one could speculate how much he would have been fascinated and most interested in following the course of the pandemic. Since he coined the word "gerontology", he would have been intrigued by the high mortality among the elderly, and by the concepts of immunosenescence and inflammaging that characterize the SARS-CoV-2 infection. While Metchnikoff's work is mainly associated with the discovery of the phagocytes and the birth of cellular innate immunity, he regularly in
