Curli, a major component of the bacterial biofilms in the intestinal tract, activates pattern recognition receptors and triggers joint inflammation after infection with Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium. The factors that allow S. Typhimurium to disperse from biofilms and invade the epithelium to establish a successful infection during acute inflammation remain unknown. Here, we studied S. Typhimurium biofilms in vitro and in vivo to understand how the inflammatory environment regulates the switch between multicellular and motile S. Typhimurium in the gut. We discovered that nitrate gener

Poor sanitation and contaminated food and water are major risk factors for several infectious diseases like enteric fever and hepatitis A, but their coinfection is uncommon. Although the liver is frequently affected in typhoid fever, substantial hepatic dysfunction in an appropriately treated patient is uncommon. Our patient had high-grade fever with mild transaminitis and blood culture that grew Salmonella typhi Despite being treated with culture-sensitive antibiotic at adequate dosage, he developed jaundice and had worsening transaminitis (>1000 IU/L) which was suggestive of hepatotropic vir

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) spread in the food system is a major threat to public and animal health. We describe AMR trends in zoonotic bacteria and identify risk factors associated with AMR occurrence in animals and derived food in Portugal. Data from the Portuguese AMR surveillance programme on food-producing animals, 2014-2018, were used. AMR frequencies were calculated for Escherichia coli, Campylobacter and Salmonella in broilers, turkeys, pig populations and their derived food products. AMR-associated factors were studied for Salmonella isolates: population, sampling stage (farm, slau

Catecholamine stress hormones (norepinephrine, epinephrine, and dopamine) are signals that have been shown to be used as environmental cues, which affect the growth and virulence of normal microbiota as well as pathogenic bacteria. It has been reported that Escherichia coli and Salmonella use the two-component system proteins QseC and QseE to recognise catecholamines and so act as bacterial adrenergic receptors. In this study, we mutated the E. coli O157:H7 and Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium genes encoding QseC and QseE and found that this did not block stress hormone responsiveness i

The aim of this study was to determine the occurrence of mobilized colistin resistance (mcr) genes in Gram-negative bacteria causing bloodstream infections of child inpatients in China. Bacteria were collected between 2006 and 2019 in a maternal and child health hospital, and mcr genes were screened by PCR. Five of 252 isolates were mcr-positive, including one mcr-1-positive colistin-resistant Escherichia coli isolate, two mcr-9-positive colistin-susceptible Salmonella enterica isolates, and two mcr-9-positive colistin-susceptible Enterobacter hormaechei isolates. These were obtained from two

Purulent pericardial effusions are rare and represent the most severe form of bacterial pericarditis. The authors present a case of a male in his 40s with a massive purulent pericardial effusion due to non-typhoid Salmonella, who presented with ultrasound features of a cardiac tamponade. Invasive non-typhoid Salmonella cardiac infection is a rare but important consideration in immunocompromised individuals. This of particular concern in sub-Saharan Africa, where there is a high prevalence of HIV-infected individuals.

Historically, the use of antibiotics was not well regulated in veterinary medicine. The emergence of antibiotic resistance (ABR) in pathogenic bacteria in human and veterinary medicine has driven the need for greater antibiotic stewardship. The preservation of certain antibiotic classes for use exclusively in humans, especially in cases of multidrug resistance, has highlighted the need for veterinarians to reduce its use and redefine dosage regimens of antibiotics to ensure efficacy and guard against the development of ABR pathogens. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), the lowest conce

BACKGROUND: The management of enteric fever through antibiotics is difficult these days due to the emerging resistance of Salmonella to various antimicrobial agents. The development of antimicrobial resistance is associated with multiple factors including mutations in the specific genes. To know the current status of mutation-mediated fluoroquinolone-resistance among Salmonella enterica serovars; Typhi, Paratyphi A, B and C, this study was focused on detecting gyrA ser83 mutation by restriction digestion analysis of gyrA gene using HinfI endonuclease.
RESULTS: A total of 948 blood samples wer

Based on the significant and diverse pharmacophore features of triazole ring and considering the potent antimicrobial properties of quinoline scaffold, a novel series of 1,2,3-triazole-based polyaromatic compounds containing chloroquinoline moiety were synthesized through a well-established synthetic methodology, named click chemistry. The structure of the synthetic compounds was characterized by various spectroscopic methods. The final products of triazole/quinoline hybrids and ((prop-2-yn-1-yloxy)methyl)benzene intermediates were screened for their antibacterial (Staphylococcus aureus, Esche

Clostridium perfringens is an anaerobic, gram-positive, spore-forming bacterium that ubiquitously inhabits a wide variety of natural environments including the gastrointestinal tract of humans and animals. C. perfringens is an opportunistic enteropathogen capable of producing at least 20 different toxins in various combinations. Strains of C. perfringens are currently categorized into 7 toxinotypes (A, B, C, D, E, F, and G) based on the presence or absence of 6 typing-toxins (α, β, epsilon, iota, enterotoxin, and netB). Each toxinotype is associated with specific histotoxic and enteric disease

Salmonella typhi is notorious for causing enteric fever which is also known as typhoid fever. It emerged as an extreme drug resistant strain that requires urgent attention to prevent its global spread. Statistically, about 11-17 million typhoid illnesses are reported worldwide annually. The only alternative approach for the control of this illness is proper vaccination. However, available typhoid vaccine has certain limitations such as poor long-term efficacy, and non-recommendation for below 6 years children, which opens the avenues for designing new vaccines to overcome such limitations. To persist and establish infection, Salmonella utilizes a battery of different virulence determinants at every stage of infection. Typhoid toxin, a newly identified toxin in Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi is recognized as one of the virulence factors that has been linked with Salmonella pathogenesis. In this study, we have further investigated the role of typhoid toxin in the symptomatology of typhoid fever through in-vivo and ex-vivo studies. In mice, administration of cloned and purified typhoid toxin induces similar symptoms observed during typhoid fever such as fever, weight loss with a

BACKGROUND: There is a substantial typhoid burden in sub-Saharan Africa, and TCV has been introduced in two African countries to date. Decision-makers in Malawi decided to introduce TCV and applied for financial support from Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance in 2020. The current plan is to introduce TCV as part of the national immunization program in late 2022. The introduction will include a nationwide campaign targeting all children aged 9 months to 15 years. Following the campaign, TCV will be provided through routine immunization at 9 months. This study aims to estimate the cost of TCV introducti

Non-typhoidal Salmonella spp. cause persistent asymptomatic infections in poultry. The consumption of Salmonella-infected poultry products is associated with food poisoning. One of the pathogens that causes such infections is Salmonella ser. Enteritidis (SE). Therefore, alternative measures are required for better control of salmonellosis and to reduce potential antibiotic use. Here, the efficacy of a mixture of lactic acid bacteria (LAB), formulated based on competitive exclusion, was evaluated. The LAB mixture was administered to 1- to 20-day-old chickens using different schemes; the chicken

Inflammatory responses have been shown to induce hyperglycemia, yet the underlying mechanism is still largely unclear. GLP-1 is an important intestinal hormone for regulating glucose homeostasis; however, few studies have investigated the influence of digestive tract Salmonella infection on enteroendocrine L cell secretions. In this study, we established a model of Salmonella-infected piglets by oral gavage in order to analyze the effects of Salmonella infection on enteroendocrine L cell function. Furthermore, in vitro lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was administered to STC-1 cells to clarify its dir

The rapid identification of bacterial antibiotic susceptibility is pivotal to the rational administration of antibacterial drugs. In this study, cefotaxime (CTX)-derived resistance in Salmonella typhimurium (abbr. CTXr-S. typhimurium) during 3 months of exposure was rapidly recorded using a portable Raman spectrometer. The molecular changes that occurred in the drug-resistant strains were sensitively monitored in whole cells by label-free surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). Various degrees of resistant strains could be accurately discriminated by applying multivariate statistical analyse
