Polyphenolic phytochemicals as natural feed additives to control bacterial pathogens in the chicken gut.

Poultry provides an important protein source consumed globally by human population, and simultaneously, acts as a substantial reservoir of antibiotic resistant bacterial species such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella, Campylobacter, Clostridium perfringens. These bacterial species can include commensal strains with beneficial roles on poultry health and productivity, and pathogenic strains not only to poultry but zoonotically to man. This review paper evaluates the role of phytochemicals as possible alternatives to antibiotics and natural anti-bacterial agents to control antibiotic resistance in

Prevention of Typhoid by Vi Conjugate Vaccine and Achievable Improvements in Household Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene: Evidence From a Cluster-Randomized Trial in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Typhoid fever contributes to approximately 135 000 deaths annually. Achievable improvements in household water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) combined with vaccination using typhoid conjugate vaccines (TCVs) may be an effective preventive strategy. However, little is known about how improved WASH and vaccination interact to lower the risk of typhoid. METHODS: A total of 61 654 urban Bangladeshi children aged 9 months to <16 years, residing in 150 clusters with a baseline population of 205 760 residents, were randomized 1:1 by cluster to Vi-tetanus toxoid TCV or Japanese encephali

Development of a novel machine learning-based weighted modeling approach to incorporate Salmonella enterica heterogeneity on a genetic scale in a dose-response modeling framework.

Estimating microbial dose-response is an important aspect of a food safety risk assessment. In recent years, there has been considerable interest to advance these models with potential incorporation of gene expression data. The aim of this study was to develop a novel machine learning model that considers the weights of expression of Salmonella genes that could be associated with illness, given exposure, in hosts. Here, an elastic net-based weighted Poisson regression method was proposed to identify Salmonella enterica genes that could be significantly associated with the illness response, irr

Genetic background influences survival of infections with Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium in the Collaborative Cross.

Salmonella infections typically cause self-limiting gastroenteritis, but in some individuals these bacteria can spread systemically and cause disseminated disease. Salmonella Typhimurium (STm), which causes severe systemic disease in most inbred mice, has been used as a model for disseminated disease. To screen for new infection phenotypes across a range of host genetics, we orally infected 32 Collaborative Cross (CC) mouse strains with STm and monitored their disease progression for seven days by telemetry. Our data revealed a broad range of phenotypes across CC strains in many parameters inc

Inhibitory potentials of Streptomyces exfoliatus strain 'MUJA10' against bacterial pathogens isolated from rural areas in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Healthcare-associated infections are resulting in human morbidity and mortality worldwide. These infections are directly proportional to increased multidrug resistance (MDR), which limits antibiotic treatment and make the treatment of infections challenging. Streptomyces spp. are well known to produce various biologically active compounds. Therefore, these are considered as promising biological control agents against wide range of bacterial pathogens. This study was conducted to isolate and identify the most efficient antibiotic-producing Streptomyces St 45 isolate against Staphylococcus aureu

Antibiotic natural product hunanamycin A: Lead identification towards anti-Salmonella agents.

Design and synthesis of library of compounds around the antibiotic natural product hunanamycin A scaffold and their biological evaluation are disclosed here. These efforts resulted in identification of a lead compound 36, which is a structurally simplified analogue of original hunanamycin A with impressive activity against Salmonella enterica and possesses other druggable properties. In addition, no acute oral toxicity was observed for compound 36 in Swiss albino mice dosed up to 2 g/kg. It has the potential to be developed for the treatment of food infections caused by Salmonella.

Investigation of an international outbreak of multidrug-resistant monophasic Salmonella Typhimurium associated with chocolate products, EU/EEA and United Kingdom, February to April 2022.

An extensive multi-country outbreak of multidrug-resistant monophasic Salmonella Typhimurium infection in 10 countries with 150 reported cases, predominantly affecting young children, has been linked to chocolate products produced by a large multinational company. Extensive withdrawals and recalls of multiple product lines have been undertaken. With Easter approaching, widespread product distribution and the vulnerability of the affected population, early and effective real-time sharing of microbiological and epidemiological information has been of critical importance in effectively managing t

Research Note: Virulence gene downregulation and reduced intestinal colonization of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium PHL2020 isolate in broilers by a natural antimicrobial (NeutraPath™).

The reduction in antibiotic growth promoter use in poultry, due to antibiotic resistance concerns, has created a need for natural solutions that control enteric pathogens like Salmonella. One of these natural feed additives, a select blend of essential oils, fatty acids, and an enterosorbent mineral (NeutraPath), was assessed for its effects on the intestinal colonization of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium PHL2020 isolate (ST-PHL2020) in broiler chickens and ST-PHL2020 virulence gene expression. [Clinical and epidemiologic description of a severe outbreak of Salmonellosis in an urban nursery school].

OBJECTIVE: We describe clinically and epidemiologically an outbreak of gastrointestinal infection by Salmonella enterica ser. (serotype) Enteritidis in an urban infant school, which led to high morbidity and significant social alarm. The immediate communication, as well as the adequate study of the outbreak, in both aspects, allowed identifying the pathogen and establishing control measures in a reasonable period of time. Controversial aspects such as the indication of antibiotherapy or the moment of closing the center are discussed. METHODS: We retrospectively collected clinical, analytical

Comparative Genomic Analysis of Salmonella enterica Serovar Typhimurium Isolates from Passerines Reveals Two Lineages Circulating in Europe, New Zealand, and the United States.

Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium strains from passerines have caused wild bird deaths and human salmonellosis outbreaks in Europe, Oceania, and North America. Here, we performed comparative genomic analysis to explore the emergence, genetic relationship, and evolution of geographically dispersed passerine isolates. We found that passerine isolates from Europe and the United States clustered to form two lineages (EU and US passerine lineages), which were distinct from major S. Typhimurium lineages circulating in other diverse hosts (e.g., humans, cattle, pigs, chickens, and other avian h

Nonspecific protection of heat-inactivated Mycobacterium bovis against Salmonella Choleraesuis infection in pigs.

Trained immunity is the capacity of innate immune cells to produce an improved response against a secondary infection after a previous unrelated infection. Salmonellosis represents a public health issue and affects the pig farming industry. In general, vaccination against salmonellosis is still facing problems regarding the control of distinct serovars. Therefore, we hypothesized that an immunostimulant based on heat inactivated Mycobacterium bovis (HIMB) could have an immune training effect in pigs challenged with Salmonella enterica serovar Choleraesuis (S. Choleraesuis) and decided to explo

Coordinated interaction between Lon protease and catalase-peroxidase regulates virulence and oxidative stress management during Salmonellosis.

This study investigates the interplay between Lon protease and catalase-peroxidase (KatG) in relation to virulence modulation and the response to oxidative stress in Salmonella Typhimurium (ST). Proteomic comparison of ST wild-type and lon deletion mutant led to the recognition of a highly expressed KatG protein product among five other protein candidates that were significantly affected by lon deletion. By employing a bacterium two-hybrid assay (B2H), we demonstrated that the catalytic domain of Lon protease potentially interacts with the KatG protein that leads to proteolytic cleavage. Asses

Enhancement of anti-bacterial potential of green synthesized selenium nanoparticles by starch encapsulation.

This study established a cost-effective and environmentally friendly approach to synthesizing the selenium nanoparticles using Artemisia annua (AaSeNPs) and encapsulating the starch (StAaSeNPs) for enhanced anti-bacterial activity. The UV-vis spectra displayed an absorption maxima at 278 nm corresponding to surface plasmon resonance of SeNPs. Particle size were found 70.81 nm for AaSeNPs and 109.2 nm for StAaSeNPs with zeta potential of -26.6 and -30.9 mV respectively. TEM images evidenced that both NPs were spherical in structure with an average particle size of <200 nm. FT-IR indicated the h

Antimicrobial resistance and genetic background of non-typhoidal Salmonella enterica strains isolated from human infections in São Paulo, Brazil (2000-2019).

Salmonella enterica causes Salmonellosis, an important infection in humans and other animals. The number of multidrug-resistant (MDR) phenotypes associated with Salmonella spp. isolates is increasing worldwide, causing public health concern. Here, we aim to characterize the antimicrobial-resistant phenotype of 789 non-typhoidal S. enterica strains isolated from human infections in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, along 20 years (2000-2019). Among the non-susceptible isolates, 31.55, 14.06, and 13.18% were resistant to aminoglycosides, tetracycline, and β-lactams, respectively. Moreover, 68 and
