The detection of toxigenic Corynebacterium ulcerans from cats with nasal inflammation in Japan.

Corynebacterium ulcerans (toxigenic C. ulcerans) produces the diphtheria toxin, which causes pharyngeal and cutaneous diphtheria-like disease in people, and this bacterium is commonly detected in dogs and cats that are reared at home. It is considered dangerous when a carrier animal becomes the source of infection in people. To investigate the carrier situation of toxigenic C. ulcerans of cats bred in Japan, bacteria were isolated from 37 cats with a primary complaint of rhinitis in 16 veterinary hospitals in Osaka. Toxigenic C. ulcerans was detected in two of the cats. By drug sensitivity tes

Corynebacterium ulcerans cutaneous diphtheria.

We describe the case of a patient with cutaneous diphtheria caused by toxigenic Corynebacterium ulcerans who developed a right hand flexor sheath infection and symptoms of sepsis such as fever, tachycardia, and elevated C-reactive protein, after contact with domestic cats and dogs, and a fox. We summarise the epidemiology, clinical presentation, microbiology, diagnosis, therapy, and public health aspects of this disease, with emphasis on improving recognition. In many European countries, C ulcerans has become the organism commonly associated with cutaneous diphtheria, usually seen as an import

Cutaneous ulcers in a returning traveller: a rare case of imported diphtheria in the UK.

We describe a case of cutaneous diphtheria in the UK, presenting as lower leg ulcers in a returning traveller, and discuss the epidemiology, significance and public health implications of this disease and the therapeutic options available. A 65-year-old woman presented with a 6-week history of multiple ulcers appearing on her legs following a holiday in Kenya. Culture of biopsy tissue grew Corynebacterium diphtheriae. A cascade of therapeutic and public health interventions followed, many of which were terminated once the isolate was confirmed as nontoxigenic. Cutaneous diphtheria is a rare, n

Imported toxigenic cutaneous diphtheria in a young male returning from Mozambique to Norway, March 2014.

Six outbreaks of infectious syphilis in the United Kingdom, ongoing since 2012, have been investigated among men who have sex with men (MSM) and heterosexual men and women aged under 25 years. Interventions included case finding and raising awareness among healthcare professionals and the public. Targeting at-risk populations was complicated as many sexual encounters involved anonymous partners. Outbreaks among MSM were influenced by the use of geospatial real-time networking applications that allow users to locate other MSM within close proximity.

Toxigenic cutaneous diphtheria in a returned traveller.

Diphtheria is rarely reported in Australia. A case of cutaneous diphtheria was reported to the South Australian Department for Health and Ageing in April 2013 in an Australian-born 18-year-old female following travel in India. The case presented with a skin ulcer on her toe. Toxigenic Corynebacterium diphtheriae was isolated from a swab of the lesion. The case was treated with antibiotics. The public health response included infection control advice, assessing the case and household contacts for organism carriage and providing antimicrobial chemoprophylaxis to contacts. Although cutaneous diph

Gastric pathophysiological ins and outs of helicobacter pylori: a review.

Human pregnancy is a delicate and complex process where multiorgan interactions between two independent systems, the mother, and her fetus, maintain pregnancy. Intercellular interactions that can define homeostasis at the various cellular level between the two systems allow uninterrupted fetal growth and development until delivery. Interactions are needed for tissue remodeling during pregnancy at both fetal and maternal tissue layers. One of the mechanisms that help tissue remodeling is via cellular transitions where epithelial cells undergo a cyclic transition from epithelial to mesenchymal (

Cases of cutaneous diphtheria in New Zealand: implications for surveillance and management.

AIM: Diphtheria is an acute bacterial illness caused by toxigenic strains of Corynebacterium diphtheriae (C. diphtheriae). We describe two epidemiologically-linked cases of skin infections from which toxigenic C. diphtheriae was isolated, and discuss implications for diphtheria surveillance and management in New Zealand. METHOD: A public health investigation was undertaken to identify and manage close contacts of the index case. National and international guidelines on the surveillance and management of cutaneous diphtheria were reviewed, and data on toxigenic C. diphtheriae isolates identifi

A case of cutaneous diphtheria in New Zealand.

We report the case of an adult male who contracted cutaneous diphtheria after receiving a tattoo in Samoa. The infection required hospital admission. The Regional Public Health Service conducted urgent contact tracing. We review the techniques employed in traditional tattooing and highlight the importance of considering C. diphtheriae as a causative organism in cutaneous infection acquired in the tropics.

Sexually transmitted diphtheria.

Diphtheria is caused by diphtheria toxin-producing Corynebacterium species. While classical respiratory diphtheria is transmitted by droplets, cutaneous diphtheria often results from minor trauma. This report concerns the first case of sexually transmitted diphtheria in a patient with non-gonococcal urethritis after orogenital contact.

Rare human skin infection with Corynebacterium ulcerans: transmission by a domestic cat.

Corynebacterium ulcerans is mainly known for its ability to cause animal infections. Some strains of C. ulcerans produce diphtheria toxin, which can cause life-threatening cardiopathies and neuropathies in humans. Human cutaneous C. ulcerans infection is a very rare disease that mimics classical cutaneous diphtheria. We present a very rare case of a C. ulcerans skin infection caused by a non-diphtheria toxin-producing strain of C. ulcerans that resolved after 3 weeks of therapy with amoxicillin-clavulanate. A pet cat was the probable source of infection. The presence of C. ulcerans in the mout

Two cases of cutaneous diphtheria associated with occupational pig contact in Germany.

In 2010, two independent cases of cutaneous diphtheria caused by toxigenic C. ulcerans were identified in Germany. Both patients had intense occupational contact with pigs. Diagnostic work-up comprising biochemical differentiation, rpoB sequencing, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF) analysis, real-time tox PCR and Elek test as well as public health measures including an intensified source tracing involving 83 asymptomatic pigs of an associated pig farm are presented.

Cutaneous diphtheria in the urban poor population of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada: a 10-year review.

Between 1998 and 2007, records from 33 patients with cutaneous diphtheria from Vancouver's inner city were reviewed. Cases were associated with injection drug use and poverty. Coinfections with Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Arcanobacterium haemolyticum occurred. Corynebacterium diphtheriae is endemic in Vancouver's urban core, with strains of multilocus sequence type (MLST) 76 predominating.

Cutaneous diphtheria masquerading as a sexually transmitted disease.

A 41 year-old, sexually promiscuous, married male, an agricultural laborer by occupation, presented to our sexually transmitted diseases (STD) clinic with multiple ulcers over the scrotum and genitalia of 20 days' duration. Bacterial culture from swabs taken from the genital ulcer, grew organisms morphologically and biochemically characteristic of Corynebacterium diphtheriae. He made a complete and uneventful recovery after two weeks of therapy with antidiphtheria serum and crystalline penicillin. This case brings into light this hitherto unreported presentation of wound diphtheria mimicking a

Cutaneous diphtheroid infection and review of other cutaneous Gram-positive Bacillus infections.

Cutaneous diphtheria is a rare infection in the United States. This article presents a case of genital ulcerations, which were likely secondary to cutaneous coryneform bacterial infection, and reviews the literature concerning the diagnosis and management of this entity. In addition, we briefly review other Gram-positive Bacillus bacterial infections of the skin.

Upper respiratory tract and cutaneous diphtheria.

With the global immunization programme of children there is a progressive decline in the number of diphtheria cases. It is a disease commonly affecting the children caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae usually affecting the mucous membrane of the nose, pharynx or larynx. Cutaneous diphtheria is a rare entity. We present a rare case of cutaneous diphtheria in a 15-year-old boy with nasal pharyngeal and laryngeal involvement. The patient developed anaphylactic reaction to antidiphtheritic serum (ADS) during treatment, all of which were managed successfully.
