Sixty-two consecutive patients with sporadic euthyroid goiter (57 women and 5 men) from noniodine-deficient areas, including 15 patients with diffuse goiter, 39 patients with multinodular goiter, and 8 patients with a single nodule, were studied for the presence of serum thyroid growth-stimulating immunoglobulins (TGI) by the ultrasensitive cytochemical bioassay based on DNA cytophotometry (Feulgen-cytochemical bioassay). The free thyroxine index (FT4I), triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) in serum and the peak serum TSH (TRH test) were measured in 18 patients with nontoxic uninodular goitre and 32 patients with nontoxic multinodular goitre before and 3, 6, 12, 24 and 36 months after goitre resection. Levels of corrected serum calcium, serum free thyroxine index, and serum thyroid stimulating hormone were measured prior to thyroid surgery and 3, 6, 12, 24, and 36 months postoperatively in 18 patients with nontoxic uninodular goitre and in 32 patients with nontoxic multinodular goitre. The occurrence of serum immunoglobulins with capacity to stimulate thyroid adenylate cyclase (TSAb) was studied in seventy-two healthy volunteers and 120 unselected patients with various thyroid diseases. A high frequency of TSAb (82.5%, P less than 0.00006) was found in Graves' disease, while TSAb was present only in 13--20% of serum from patients with nontoxic nodular goitre, nontoxic diffuse goitre, toxic adenoma, toxic nodular goitre and myxoedema. The cellular immunity to Yersinia enterocolitica serotype 3 and crude human thyroid extract in 64 patients with thyroid diseases and 25 controls was studied by the leucocyte migration test.
