Roadway Runoff Induced Acute Mortality in Juvenile Coho Salmon During Spring Storm Events.

Extensive mortalities of adult coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch), often called "Urban Runoff Mortality Syndrome" (URMS), have been documented during the fall in creeks where water quality has been degraded by roadway runoff. The primary cause of mortality is 6PPD-quinone (6PPDQ; N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine quinone)-an ozone transformation product that forms on all vehicle tires. Laboratory studies have shown that juvenile coho salmon are highly sensitive to 6PPDQ exposure. Unlike adults, juveniles reside in impacted watersheds year-round, including during the spring whe

Geomagnetic navigation metaheuristic algorithm for engineering optimization.

This paper proposes a novel meta-heuristic optimization algorithm - Geomagnetic Navigation Algorithm (GNA), which is inspired by the geomagnetic navigation mechanism of migratory birds. The algorithm constructs three core mechanisms: (1) Geomagnetic gradient dominance and multi-source cognitive modulation mechanism, which maps the direction of the magnetic inclination gradient to the global optimal solution and integrates information from three channels: elite memory, group social cognition, and magnetic pole reinforcement attraction; (2) Adaptive cognitive landmark chain correction mechanism,

Trends and weather events in long-term densities of an insular lizard.

Lizard populations have been traditionally considered unusually stable. However, there are very few examples to verify this hypothesis on long-term studied populations. Over almost four decades, we have obtained long time series of the abundance of Lilford's Wall Lizard, Podarcis lilfordi, from all known populations of Menorca (Balearic Islands, Spain). Lizard densities were estimated from line transects data using N-mixture models. Irregular time series were then checked for the presence or absence of a monotonic trend and for density dependence of each population. With multiple regression mo

The actionable transcriptome: a framework for incorporating RNA sequencing into precision oncology.

Comprehensive, multiplexed RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) is increasingly being incorporated into molecular tumour-profiling assays owing to overall cost-effectiveness related to enhanced detection of clinically actionable biomarkers. RNA-seq assays are now quite robust, with turnaround times of a few weeks and reasonable costs that support integration into routine clinical workflows. In this Perspective, we propose a framework for incorporating RNA levels and other RNA-seq data into precision oncology that considers RNA levels of oncogenes, tumour suppressors and diverse therapeutic targets, as wel

The effect of paclitaxel premedication discontinuation on rescue medication use.

PURPOSE: Premedication with clemastine and dexamethasone is administered to prevent paclitaxel-induced hypersensitivity reactions (HSRs), which predominantly occur during the first two administrations. To reduce premedication and related adverse effects, our hospital implemented a policy to discontinue premedication after two paclitaxel doses if no HSR occurred. This study evaluated whether rescue medication use after the second dose was not substantially higher following the protocol change. METHOD: We conducted a retrospective, observational, non-inferiority study, comparing patients receiv

Clinical and inflammatory predictors of ICU admission and mortality in COVID-19: A retrospective multi-center cohort study from Saudi Arabia.

The early variant era of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic was characterized by the emergence of new viral strains and limited vaccination coverage. Data describing the clinical, radiological, and inflammatory characteristics of affected patients in the Middle East remain scarce. This study aimed to fill this gap by comparing the clinical profiles, cytokine responses, and radiological patterns of intensive care unit (ICU) and non-ICU COVID-19 patients during the early phase of the pandemic in Saudi Arabia. A retrospective cohort study was conducted between February and August 20

21st-Century Mangrove Expansion Along the Southeastern United States.

Warming winter temperatures are driving range expansion of tropical, cold-sensitive mangroves into temperate ecosystems. Along the Atlantic coast of North America, the mangrove range limit is particularly sensitive to climate variability and historical data demonstrate that the mangrove-salt marsh ecotone on this coast has shifted recurrently during recent centuries. However, a comprehensive understanding of how this mangrove-salt marsh ecotone may shift in the future remains lacking. Here, we combine ensemble forecasting of mangrove distribution for the next century with high-resolution ocean

Rebel responses to disasters in conflict zones: a case study of Cyclone Mocha in Myanmar.

Populations in conflict-affected contexts face overlapping drivers of disaster risk. This article explores the intersection of disasters and armed conflict through an analysis of the role of non-state armed groups, focusing on the Arakan Army (AA)'s response to Cyclone Mocha in Myanmar's Rakhine State in 2023. Using the process tracing method and drawing on interviews and secondary sources, the study finds that the AA's fragmented territorial control and parallel governance structures nonetheless enabled extensive humanitarian operations through collaboration with civil society and volunteer n

Effect of a multifaceted hospital fluid conservation approach to intravenous fluid shortages on patient outcomes.

PURPOSE: In September 2024, Hurricane Helene disrupted a key North Carolina facility producing 60% of medical-grade fluids in the United States, causing a nationwide intravenous fluid (IVF) shortage and prompting urgent conservation in hospitals. The impact of these efforts on patient outcomes remains poorly understood. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of a hospital-wide fluid conservation strategy on the incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI). METHODS: A single-site retrospective study was conducted between January 1, 2024, and December 4, 2024, at an academic hospital. The

Closing the loop. Repurposed iron-coated granulate improves pollutant removal in nature-based solutions.

Optimising nature-based solutions for the removal of dissolved pollutants is essential for their adoption as end-of-pipe solutions in urban drainage systems. This study evaluates the performance of a repurposed iron-coated granulate, sourced from a drinking water treatment plant, as an amendment in bioretention systems. In a column experiment, a control media mixture of pumice and coconut fibres was compared to one amended with 10 % iron-coated granulate. Four configurations were tested: media-only, media with vegetation, media with a zone, saturated with water, and media with both vegetation

Blue carbon and microplastic dynamics in natural and planted mangroves, Thailand.

Mangrove forests (MFs) play a crucial role in climate change mitigation due to their capacity to store significant amounts of blue carbon. This study investigates carbon sequestration dynamics in MF sediments, encompassing natural stands (sites BD1 and BD3) and planted stands (sites PN2, PN3, and PN4), focusing on vertical soil profiles up to 1 m depth. Results indicate that natural mangroves function as blue carbon hotspots, benefiting from mangrove, terrestrial, and marine organic matter (OM) inputs. In comparison, a 10-year-old plantation (PN2) stored approximately twice the carbon of a 2-y

Unraveling storm wave populations in the UAE with multivariate and clustering analysis.

Wind waves are surface waves generated by the transfer of energy and momentum from the wind to water. Understanding wind fields is essential for determining wave characteristics, as the wave field develops over hours to days under continuous wind forcing. The Arabian Gulf, a region of global significance, is influenced by multiple winds systems due to its unique geography. The UAE, situated in the southern Arabian Gulf with a coastline spanning 1,318 km and territorial waters covering approximately 27,624 km2, is particularly susceptible to wave storms originating from multiple directions. Climate change shifts the North Pacific storm track polewards.

Across the North Pacific Ocean, the mid-latitude storm track accounts for most of the heat and moisture transport into the Arctic and western North America, considerably influencing regional precipitation and temperature patterns1,2. By the end of this century, the winter North Pacific storm track is projected to shift polewards3-6, with substantial implications for oceanic ecosystems and land-based water availability1,7. Although atmospheric reanalyses suggest a polewards shift of the storm track7-12, the lack of an observed wind record has left it uncertain whether the storm-track shift has

A Müller Glia-Retinal Pigment Epithelium Apical Network Surrounding Cone Outer Segments in Fish and Mouse.

Understanding how diverse headwater streams contribute water downstream is critical for accurate modeling of seasonal flow dynamics in larger systems. This study investigated how headwater catchments, with diverse subsurface storage, influence downstream flows within Lookout Creek-a 62 km2, 5th-order catchment in the rain-snow transition zone in western Oregon, USA. We analyzed one year of hydrometric and water stable isotope data collected at ten stream locations, complemented by a decade of precipitation isotopic data. As expected, isotopic data revealed that most of the streamflow was sourc

Unleashing the Potent Antitumor Force: A Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) Storm Formation by Ultrasound-Activatable Metal Nanosonosensitizers.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated tumor therapy, which induces oxidative stress damage for precise oncolysis, represents a novel antitumor strategy. However, the overexpression of glutathione (GSH) in the tumor microenvironment (TME) forms a strong antioxidant barrier, rapidly scavenging ROS and repairing oxidative damage, thus limiting the efficacy of conventional ROS-based therapies. Metal nanosonosensitizers, activated by ultrasound and penetrating deeply into the TME, offer a promising solution when combined with glutaminase1 (GLS1) inhibitors to overcome GSH-mediated defenses. This s

Weathering budget cuts: Lessons from NASA.

The current uncertainty and cuts to science funding affect universities, research facilities, and laboratories across the United States, but this situation is not unprecedented. Under pressure to fund the Vietnam War, President Nixon slashed the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) budget, and the deep cuts to planetary science altered the course of exploration. Lessons learned from studying this government-funded boom-and-bust field over the past half century can help all scientific institutions weather this storm.

Idiopathic Multicentric Castleman Disease-TAFRO: A Potentially Curable Disease?

Idiopathic multicentric Castleman disease (iMCD)-TAFRO (Thrombocytopenia, Anasarca, Fever, Reticulin fibrosis/renal dysfunction, Organomegaly) is the most severe clinical subtype of iMCD characterized by a catastrophic cytokine storm. Currently, iMCD-TAFRO is regarded as incurable which needs "indefinite" treatment. However, long-term data are sparse, and treatment discontinuation may be possible in a subset of patients. This multicenter, retrospective study analyzed 27 patients who discontinued treatment. All patients had biochemical complete response (CR) at the time of drug discontinuation.
