BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular manifestations of thyrotoxicosis are common, typically presenting as tachyarrhythmias or high-output physiology. Coronary artery spasm (CAS) is an uncommon but increasingly recognized complication, usually causing transient ischaemia rather than malignant ventricular arrhythmias. Cardiac arrest due to thyrotoxicosis-induced CAS is exceedingly rare. Early recognition is vital because management differs from that of typical acute coronary syndromes (ACS).
CASE SUMMARY: A 63-year-old man suffered an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest with an initial shockable rhythm, achie

Larynx-trachea-thyroid-parathyroid allotransplantation can restore essential laryngeal functions, but postoperative endocrine changes remain poorly understood. This study assessed thyroid and parathyroid function in four recipients. All developed early thyroid hormone alterations consistent with euthyroid sick syndrome, followed by variable endocrine outcomes. Two experienced thyrotoxicosis associated temporally with graft rejection, while another developed hypothyroidism and elevated parathyroid hormone during late rejection. Transient parathyroid hormone suppression was also observed. In con

Spontaneous internal carotid artery (ICA) dissection is a rare but potentially serious cause of ischemic stroke, with a frequently heterogeneous clinical presentation that poses a diagnostic challenge, particularly in primary care settings. We report a case of a 46-year-old female with a history of migraine, resolved thyrotoxicosis, and oral contraceptive use, who presented to her family health unit with a 15-day history of left-sided hemicranial headache preceded by ipsilateral neck pain without identifiable trauma. Associated findings included left ptosis, ipsilateral scalp hyperesthesia, an

INTRODUCTION: The longitudinal association between sleep behaviors and the incidence of various thyroid diseases remains unclear. This study aimed to prospectively investigate the association between a healthy sleep score and the risk of incident thyroid diseases using data from the UK Biobank.
METHODS: This prospective cohort study included 499, 084 adults aged 37-73 years from the UK Biobank. A healthy sleep score ranging from 0 to 5 was constructed based on five self-reported sleep behaviors: chronotype, sleep duration, insomnia, snoring, and daytime excessive sleepiness. Participants with

BACKGROUND: Severe thyrotoxicosis remains a high-risk endocrine emergency, particularly in thyroid storm and amiodarone-induced thyrotoxicosis (AIT), where morbidity and mortality remain substantial despite modern intensive care. Rapid reduction of circulating triiodothyronine (T3) is central to stabilization, yet conventional therapies are often slow, unpredictable, or ineffective, particularly in iodine-replete states such as AIT.
SUMMARY: We reviewed mechanistic, pharmacokinetic and clinical evidence for iopanoic acid, a potent inhibitor of type I and type II 5'-deiodinase that produces ra

Factitious thyrotoxicosis is the presence of excess circulating thyroid hormone from an exogenous source. It can be iatrogenic or it can occur due to intentional thyroid hormone misuse or abuse. It can also occur due to accidental ingestion, pharmacy error, or inadvertent exposure to unlabeled thyroid hormone in supplements or contaminated hamburger meat. Consequences range from mild thyrotoxic symptoms to more serious or life-threatening sequelae including thyrotoxic periodic paralysis, seizure, coma, arrhythmias, myocardial infarction, and thyroid storm. If unclear from the history, differen

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune polyglandular syndrome type 2 (APS-2) is a rare autoimmune disorder characterized by the coexistence of autoimmune adrenal insufficiency with autoimmune thyroid disease and/or type 1 diabetes mellitus. Its heterogeneous and progressive presentation frequently delays diagnosis, particularly during acute endocrine emergencies where one dominant manifestation may obscure concurrent glandular dysfunction. Recognition of evolving autoimmune disease before overt adrenal insufficiency develops remains particularly challenging, especially when emergency corticosteroid therapy is

Thyroid crisis is caused by an excess of thyroid hormones in the body, leading to a hypermetabolic state and a series of pathological and physiological changes. Clinical manifestations are often non-specific, and in severe cases, it can manifest as multiple organ dysfunction. Acute myocardial infarction combined with thyroid crisis is dangerous and has a high mortality rate. Timely identification and combination of mechanical circulatory support and antithyroid drug treatment are key to improving prognosis. On January 28, 2021, a 49-year-old female patient was admitted to Yanbian University Af

Deficiencies in oxytocin are associated with neurodevelopmental and behavioral disorders, and the oxytocin gene (Oxt) can be regulated by thyroid hormone. We have previously shown that a systemic excess of thyroid hormone during development causes deficits in oxytocin that are associated with major abnormalities in mood-related and social behaviors. To determine whether the disruption in oxytocin physiology is responsible for these aberrant behaviors we targeted thyroid hormone excess to oxytocin neurons using a mouse model of conditional deficiency of the type 3 deiodinase (DIO3), the neurona

OBJECTIVE: Thyroid dysfunction has been increasingly reported after the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. To date, no population-based study has examined this association using more than 10 million matched pairs. We compared the risk of documented thyroid outcomes after COVID-19 with that after influenza during the Omicron-predominant period.
METHODS: We conducted a nationwide retrospective cohort study using the Japanese National Database of Health Insurance Claims, including patients with COVID-19 between January 2022 and March 2023, and those with influenza between September 20

Thyroid storm is a rare, life-threatening endocrine emergency that can cause multiorgan dysfunction, although acute liver failure (ALF) remains an uncommon manifestation. A 52-year-old woman with Graves' disease who had discontinued methimazole presented with three days of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, melena, generalized weakness, and chest pain. She was lethargic and tachycardic, with a diffusely enlarged thyroid gland, warm skin, bilateral hand tremors, and hypoglycemia. Laboratory testing demonstrated severe thyrotoxicosis, marked hepatocellular injury with an aspartate aminotransferase conc

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of TSI positivity in pregnant women and its association with pregnancy complications remain unclear.
METHODS: This study evaluated 3090 pregnant women with stored serum samples during early pregnancy at Peking University First Hospital from October 2017 to August 2018. The risks of maternal and fetal adverse outcomes were compared across three groups: group A (TSI < 0.1 IU/L), group B (0.1≤ TSI < 0.55 IU/L), and group C (TSI ≥ 0.55 IU/L), using logistic regression models.
RESULTS: The positivity rate of TSI (≥0.55 IU/L) was 1.33%, whereas 96.31% of women had TSI

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have become an increasingly prominent therapeutic option in the management of a variety of cancers. As their clinical use expands, so too should our understanding of immune-related adverse events (irAEs) associated with these agents. By enhancing immune activation, ICIs can cause off-target inflammation in various tissues, including endocrine. We present a case illustrating a rare but life-threatening manifestation of ICI toxicity: simultaneous severe diabetes mellitus and thyrotoxicosis after just a single dose of ICI. This case highlights the importance of

SUMMARY: Graves' disease is common, with an estimated prevalence of 0.2-2% and multiple associated complications. We present a case of severe mitral regurgitation secondary to poorly controlled Graves' disease for 11 years, highlighting the need for definitive treatment. A 30-year-old female attended hospital with palpitations, agitation and generalised pain. Her past medical history included Graves' disease diagnosed in 2014, with poor compliance and engagement with secondary care and medical treatment. Biochemical investigations and clinical examination confirmed thyrotoxicosis (TSH < 0.05 m

Amiodarone-induced thyrotoxicosis (AIT) is a potentially life-threatening complication of amiodarone therapy, particularly hazardous in patients with underlying structural heart disease. We report the case of a man in his mid-60s with severe cardiomyopathy and recurrent ventricular tachycardia who developed refractory thyrotoxicosis following amiodarone exposure. Overlapping features of type 1 and 2 AIT suggested mixed-type disease, posing a significant diagnostic challenge. Despite aggressive conventional therapy with high-dose thionamides and glucocorticoids, supplemented by adjunctive agent

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Graves' disease (GD) is a common autoimmune disorder affecting the thyroid gland and is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism and thyrotoxicosis. Given the limitations of current conventional antithyroid therapy for GD, including side effects and relapse concerns, exploring alternative therapeutic options, such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is of clinical interest. TCM, with its advantages of multi-component, multi-target actions and relatively mild side effects, has become a promising alternative therapy for GD.
AIM OF THE STUDY: This review aims t

BACKGROUND Thyrotoxicosis is associated with well-recognized and clinically significant complications, including congestive heart failure and cardiac arrhythmias. The relationship between hyperthyroidism and hepatic dysfunction is complex, with several proposed pathophysiological mechanisms; however, direct cholestatic injury is frequently overlooked. Although mild liver enzyme elevation is common in hyperthyroidism, clinically overt jaundice is rare. Nevertheless, increasing evidence from case reports and case series suggests that thyrotoxicosis, especially Graves disease, can result in chole

Subacute thyroiditis (SAT) is a self-limited inflammatory thyroid disorder that typically produces a transient thyrotoxic phase. Intracranial hypertension (IH) is a rare but potentially sight-threatening complication of thyrotoxicosis, reported almost exclusively in hyperthyroidism, with only a single previous report linking it to SAT. We report the case of a 29-year-old woman who developed IH during the thyrotoxic phase of subacute thyroiditis, temporally related to dental manipulation. She presented with headache, nausea, vomiting, and fever, followed by a syncopal episode; clinical, laborat

INTRODUCTION: Thyrotoxicosis in high-risk patients is a severe condition requiring prompt management, although conventional therapeutic approaches often present limitations. Therapeutic plasmapheresis has emerged as a potential option to achieve rapid clinical stabilization and facilitate a safe transition to definitive treatment by effectively reducing circulating thyroid hormone levels. The objective of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy profile of plasmapheresis in patients with high-risk thyrotoxicosis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective multicenter study
