Syzygium aromaticum leaf extract promoted biogenic CuO nanoparticles for the anti-apoptotic efficacies of NCI-H661 human lung adenocarcinoma cell line and following the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway.

BACKGROUND: A lower rate of permanent pacemaker (PPM) has been linked to a target aortic implantation height (AIH) >0.70, following transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) with the SAPIEN 3 valve. Based on clinical experience, it was hypothesized that a higher AIH (≥0.85) would lower the rate of PPM implantation. METHODS: A total of 127 patients (66 females, 61 males; mean age 82 ± 8 years) underwent TAVR with the SAPIEN 3 valve between May 2015 and July 2016. AIH was defined as the proportion of the valve frame above the aortic annulus in the post-deployment aortogram. A target AIH (≥0

Finite-time synchronization of quaternion-valued fuzzy memristive neural networks by an non-separation method via event-triggered control.

In this paper, the event-triggered control method is applied to study a class of generalized delayed quaternion-valued fuzzy Memristive Neural Networks. By constructing a novel Lyapunov function and designing an appropriate event-triggered controller, new event-triggered conditions and synchronization criteria are established. To handle the inherent complexity of quaternion operations, a nonlinear scaling technique is employed to compare distinct quaternion components, while an improved quaternion norm together with a symbolic function enables a holistic analysis of the quaternion-valued fuzzy

Traditional Chinese Medicine as an Adjunct in Hyperthyroidism Management: A Narrative Review of Pathophysiology, Proposed Mechanisms, and Clinical Evidence.

Hyperthyroidism, characterized by elevated serum thyroxine levels, can be classified into overt and subclinical forms. Untreated hyperthyroidism poses substantial health risks. Antithyroid drugs, radioactive iodine, and surgery are established conventional therapeutic options; however, their clinical application may be limited by relapse, adverse effects, contraindications, or patient preference. This narrative review examines the epidemiology of hyperthyroidism, particularly its association with iodine status, strong genetic predisposition, clinical manifestations predominantly seen in women

Peripheral manifestations of monocarboxylate transporter 8 deficiency: hepatic and skeletal muscle involvement.

Monocarboxylate transporter 8 (MCT8) deficiency, also known as Allan-Herndon-Dudley syndrome, is a rare X-linked disorder caused by pathogenic variants in the SLC16A2 gene. It leads to impaired transport of thyroid hormones, particularly triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4), across the blood-brain barrier and into neural cells. Consequently, the brain experiences reduced thyroid hormone availability, resulting in central hypothyroidism and severe neurodevelopmental impairment. In contrast, peripheral tissues remain exposed to elevated circulating T3, leading to chronic peripheral thyrotoxi

Pre-Treatment With Potassium Iodide and Higher Radioiodine Dose Are the Risk Factors of Mid-to-Late-Phase Transient Thyrotoxicosis Following Radioiodine Therapy for Graves' Disease in Japanese Patients: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Radioiodine therapy (RIT) is an effective treatment for Graves' disease (GD). However, some patients experience transient exacerbation of thyrotoxicosis in the mid-to-late-phase period (2 weeks to several months post-RIT), and its risk factors are poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the clinical predictors of mid-to-late-phase transient exacerbation of thyrotoxicosis following RIT. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study involving 200 Japanese patients with GD who received RIT at a single university hospital. Patients were categorized according to the cli

Thyrotoxicosis in MCT8 deficiency.

Monocarboxylate transporter 8 (MCT8) deficiency, also known as Allan-Herndon-Dudley syndrome, is a rare, severely debilitating, and life-limiting genetic disorder caused by variants in the SLC16A2 gene that render the MCT8 thyroid hormone transporter partially or completely dysfunctional. MCT8 is highly expressed throughout the body, including the brain. Its deficiency disrupts thyroid hormone homeostasis and is associated with 2 distinct concomitant clinical presentations: persistent peripheral thyrotoxicosis resulting from elevated serum levels of triiodothyronine and neurodevelopmental impa

PERSPECTIVE: Prioritizing quality of life in the management of hyperthyroidism: an expert clinical perspective.

ABSTRACT: Hyperthyroidism adversely affects quality of life (QoL), encompassing physical, mental and social functioning and well-being. Patients with hyperthyroidism often complain of anxiety, physical symptoms and tiredness. Concurrent thyroid eye disease (TED) further reduces QoL. With treatment of hyperthyroidism, QoL improves. Symptoms of hyperthyroidism, overall QoL and tiredness are among the domains that improve with a high effect size. Notwithstanding, the overall reduction in QoL persists compared to a matched general population, which seems to relate to residual tiredness, mental fat

Therapeutic Plasma Exchange in Severe Thyrotoxicosis: Clinical Observations From a Case Series.

CONTEXT: Severe thyrotoxicosis and thyroid storm have a high morbidity and mortality risk and are commonly managed with antithyroid drugs. In some patients, a combination therapy with medications and thyroidectomy as definite treatment are required. Therapeutic Plasma Exchange (TPE) can be used as a temporizing measure to achieve thyroid hormone normalization and to prevent perioperative complications before surgery. OBJECTIVE: We describe 6 cases of severe thyrotoxicosis and/or thyroid storm who underwent TPE as a bridge to thyroidectomy and present the clinical characteristics and outcomes.

Neonatal thyrotoxicosis secondary to maternal graves' disease: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Neonatal thyrotoxicosis is a rare condition that often results from maternal antibody transfer, particularly in mothers who have had Graves’ disease. This disorder causes excessive thyroid hormone production in newborns. It can present with symptoms like tachycardia, poor weight gain, irritability, and, in severe cases, heart failure. Maintaining a high index of suspicion, making a prompt diagnosis, and intervening immediately are crucial. These steps help to mitigate the risk of long-term or serious complications. CASE HISTORY: We present a neonate with late-onset neonatal thyro

Association Between Telomere Length and Thyrotoxicosis: Insights from a Two-sample Mendelian Randomization Study.

Thyrotoxicosis is an endocrine disorder characterized by excess thyroid hormones, yet its etiologic links to systemic aging biology remain incompletely defined. Telomere length (TL) reflects cellular senescence and genome stability and has been implicated in multiple complex diseases. We conducted a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study to evaluate the causal effect of genetically predicted TL on the risk of thyrotoxicosis. Genetic instruments for TL were derived from a large genome-wide association study (GWAS) of European ancestry (n > 470,000). Thyrotoxicosis summary statistics were

Non-thyroidal illness syndrome predicts poor prognosis in hepatocellular carcinoma patients treated with atezolizumab and bevacizumab.

BACKGROUND: Atezolizumab plus bevacizumab (Ate/Bev) is the first-line systemic therapy for unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the prognostic impact of immune-related thyroid adverse events (irTAEs), particularly non-thyroidal illness syndrome (NTIS), remains unclear. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 70 patients with unresectable HCC treated with Ate/Bev. Thyroid function was monitored at baseline and during the treatment. IrTAEs were classified as NTIS (low T3 and/or free T4 with normal or low TSH levels) or thyroid adverse events (hypothyroidism or thyrotoxicosis). Cli
