Passive Smoking and Thyroid Diseases: Association by Mendelian Randomization Study.

INTRODUCTION: Existing literature has primarily focused on the associations between active smoking and thyroid diseases, whereas the potential causal relationship between passive smoking and thyroid diseases remains insufficiently investigated. Therefore, we conducted a Mendelian randomization (MR) study to evaluate the potential associations of passive smoke exposure with seven prevalent thyroid diseases. METHODS: A two-sample MR design was employed using data from the IEU OpenGWAS Project. Five MR methods were applied to assess potential causal associations. Cochran's Q test assessed hetero

I saw the "thyroid inferno" sign: A fiery Doppler signature of Graves' disease.

Color Doppler ultrasonography was first used in 1988 by Ralls et al. to evaluate blood flow to the thyroid gland in patients with Graves' disease [1]. The "thyroid inferno" is the imaging demonstration of markedly increased vascularity and arteriovenous shunting seen with Graves' Disease (Fig. 2 and 1B) b[1]. This pattern consists of multiple small pulsatile areas of intrathyroidal flow seen diffusely throughout the gland in both systole and diastole. This hypervascularization reflects the hemodynamic changes of hyperfunctioning thyroid and/or an ongoing inflammatory process and is similar in

How to manage subacute thyroiditis.

Subacute thyroiditis (SAT) is a self-limited inflammatory thyroid disorder classically characterized by anterior neck pain, an enlarged tender thyroid, fever, fatigue, malaise, elevated inflammatory markers and a triphasic course from thyrotoxicosis through hypothyroidism to recovery. It can cause substantial morbidity and remains a frequent diagnostic challenge because it must be distinguished from acute suppurative thyroiditis, Graves' disease, painless thyroiditis, haemorrhage into a nodule and, rarely, malignant 'pseudothyroiditis' (rapidly growing carcinoma). In recent years, the recogniz

Ultrasound-Guided Drainage via Thyroid Catheterization for Acute Suppurative Thyroiditis: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Acute suppurative thyroiditis (AST) is a rare but potentially life-threatening infection of the thyroid gland that requires prompt diagnosis and management. While antibiotic therapy remains the cornerstone of treatment, surgical intervention is often necessary in cases complicated by abscess formation. Minimally invasive approaches have emerged as alternative strategies. CASE PRESENTATION: A 49-year-old woman with no significant past medical history presented with a rapidly enlarging painful neck mass, dysphagia, and radiating pain. Initial laboratory findings demonstrated suppres

Network meta-analysis of intrathyroidal injection of combined dexamethasone with lidocaine for subacute thyroiditis.

BACKGROUND: Intrathyroidal injection of dexamethasone (Dex) alone (monotherapy) or combined Dex with lidocaine (combination therapy) has been used for treating subacute thyroiditis (SAT). We performed this study to simultaneously determine whether intrathyroidal injection of Dex was better than oral prednisone and whether combination therapy was superior to monotherapy. METHODS: We identified studies from PubMed, Embase, Cochrane library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and Wanfang databases through December 31, 2021. Clinical efficacy, recurrence rate, adverse reactions, and

No substantial causal effect of genetic liability to viral infections on subacute thyroiditis: A large-scale Mendelian randomization analysis.

The association between viral infections and subacute thyroiditis (SAT) has been recognized, yet whether a genetic causal relationship exists between them remains unclear. To address this, we conducted a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study to investigate this relationship. Genetic instruments for exposure to common viruses were derived from published genome-wide association study summary statistics. Inverse-variance weighted was the primary analysis, supplemented by MR-Egger and weighted median methods. Sensitivity analyses included tests for heterogeneity and horizontal pleiotropy.

Magnetically ordered yet topologically robust phases emerging in concurrent Kitaev spin liquids.

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) are members of the nuclear receptor superfamily that regulate lipid, glucose, and amino acid metabolism. More recently, PPARs and corresponding ligands have been shown in skin and other organs to regulate important cellular functions, including cell proliferation and differentiation, as well as inflammatory responses. These new functions identify PPARs and corresponding ligands as potential targets for the treatment of various skin diseases and other disorders. It has been shown that in inflammatory skin disorders, including hyperproliferativ

Plasma fractionation in Latin America: a path towards sovereignty and sustainability in the supply of plasma-derived medicines.

PURPOSE: Increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) released by NADPH oxidase and inflammation are associated with arterial hypertension and eye diseases associated with high blood pressure, including glaucoma, retinopathies (e.g., age-related macular degeneration), and choroidopathies affecting ocular function; however, the mechanisms underlying these adverse outcomes remain undefined. The present study was designed to highlight the importance of oxidative stress in severe hypertension-related eye damage. METHODS: Male Wistar rats (n = 7, unless otherwise specified for specific experiments) wer

Approach to the Patient: Challenging Cases of Pediatric Thyrotoxicosis.

Graves' disease (GD) is the leading cause of hyperthyroidism in children. However, compared to adults, GD in children is a rare condition. In a recent guideline issued by the European Thyroid Association, the diagnostic evaluation and treatment of pediatric GD is described extensively. In this article, we go beyond the guideline and describe the potential challenges of establishing the right etiology of thyrotoxicosis in children, illustrated by cases of thyroid hormone resistance, autonomous functioning thyroid nodules, and subacute thyroiditis with a thyrotoxic phase. In addition, we report

Proteomics unveil candidate biomarkers and pathogenesis of subacute thyroiditis.

ABSTRACT: Subacute thyroiditis (SAT) is an inflammatory thyroid disease characterized by neck pain, tenderness, general symptoms and thyroid dysfunction. Despite gaining new insights into the epidemiology, pathogenesis and treatment of SAT in recent years, the exact pathogenesis and determinants of its clinical progression remain unclear. Here, we profiled thyroid in situ protein alterations in fine-needle aspiration biopsy samples from SAT patients using proteomic analysis and uncovered 57 differentially abundant proteins. Gene ontology and KEGG enrichment analyses identified that these prote
