Post-COVID-19 subacute painless thyroiditis: a case report in an anabolic androgenic steroid user.

PURPOSE: The coronavirus disease of 2019 is still a serious clinical problem. Moreover, its course is now often subclinical or asymptomatic. However, it may lead to the development of diseases of other organs, including thyroid diseases. One of them is subacute thyroiditis. The pathophysiology of this disease is poorly understood. Although it is typically painful, it can also be painless, but these cases are rare. In the cases without neck pain, general symptoms are often mild, which means that it can be insidious and manifest itself primarily as limited exercise capacity. The purpose of the p

Risk of thyroid dysfunction after COVID-19 vaccination: meta-analysis of 11 million individuals.

BACKGROUND: To mitigate the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, the worldwide rollout of COVID-19 vaccinations has been essential. Potential links between the COVID-19 vaccine and several thyroid disorders, like subacute thyroiditis, Graves' disease, and thyroiditis, were shown by early case reports and short observational studies. The goal of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to assess the relationship between several COVID-19 vaccinations and thyroid conditions. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive search of major databases through February 2025, adhering to Preferred Reporting Items for System

Brucellosis complicated by aortitis and thyroiditis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Brucellosis is a neglected and common zoonotic disease. Infections in humans result in a granulomatous disease that can affect many organs with various presentations and complications. Aortitis and thyroiditis are rare complications with limited data. This case discusses the successful medical therapy alone in the management of aortitis and the development of Brucella thyroid disease through autoimmune mechanisms. CASE PRESENTATION: This is a 58-year-old male patient from Jordan. He presented with prolonged fever and was found to have brucellosis associated with abdominal aortitis

The progression of TRAb-positive subacute thyroiditis and its differential diagnosis from Graves' disease.

Subacute thyroiditis (SAT) is a self-limiting thyroiditis with an unclear pathogenesis. Human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-B*35 is considered a predisposing factor, and viral infection is believed to be a trigger. In recent years, elevated levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor antibodies (TRAb) have been observed in some patients with SAT. Typically, these elevated TRAb levels may spontaneously revert to negative as the disease improves. The mechanism of TRAb production may be related to abnormalities in immune surveillance and viral infections. Critically, the presence of TRAb can influen

An overview of HLA variants in COVID-19 vaccine-induced autoimmunity.

COVID-19 vaccination, both in healthy individuals and those with comorbid medical disorders, has proven highly effective in mitigating critical disease progression and mortality rates. Nevertheless, although rare, induction of autoantibodies and new-onset autoimmune conditions in apparently healthy individuals receiving COVID-19 vaccination have been documented. These autoimmune phenomena can be broadly classified into organ-specific autoimmune disorders (e.g., subacute thyroiditis (SAT)) and systemic autoimmune disorders, with many being generally transient (e.g., vaccine-induced thrombotic t

Subacute thyroiditis after COVID-19 - Clinical, laboratory and ultrasound aspects.

BACKGROUND: Subacute thyroiditis (SAT) is a self-limited inflammatory thyroid disease that follows or co-exists with a viral infection. COVID-19 has numerous multisystemic effects, including thyroid disorders. Possible mechanisms involved in COVID-19 infection-associated thyroid dysfunction include: apoptosis, inflammatory reaction and damage to follicular cells, direct effect of the virus, or interaction with thyroid angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptors, respectively. METHODOLOGY AND RESULTS: In the period November 2021-February 2022, 12 patients with SAT associated with COVID-19

A Comparative Analysis of Subacute Thyroiditis: Before and After COVID-19.

OBJECTIVE: The COVID-19 infection impacts endocrine tissues, and various thyroid disorders have been reported in affected patients. Subacute thyroiditis (SAT), a self-limited inflammatory thyroid condition, is associated with viral respiratory tract infections. Studies have suggested a link between COVID-19 and SAT. Our study expands on this by examining differences in SAT severity before and after COVID-19. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study analyzed SAT cases at an outpatient Ontario endocrinology clinic. Cases were identified as pre-Covid (December 2015 - April 2019) or post-Covid (Dece

Mpox Infection and Endocrine Health: Bridging the Knowledge Gap.

Mpox (MPX), caused by the Monkeypox virus (MPXV), is a zoonotic orthopoxvirus infection with increasing global relevance due to sustained human-to-human transmission. While primarily known for cutaneous and systemic involvement, emerging evidence suggests that MPX may also disrupt endocrine function. This narrative review aims to synthesize current clinical, experimental, and epidemiological findings on MPX-related endocrine complications. We explore the potential impact of MPXV on the thyroid, adrenal glands, and gonads, and discuss the underlying mechanisms, clinical manifestations, and impl

Movement Disorders after Dengue Virus Infection: A Scoping Review.

Movement disorders after dengue virus (DENV) infection have been increasingly recognized. We aimed to synthesize the clinical and paraclinical characteristics, treatment responses, and outcomes of these neurologic complications. We systematically reviewed PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and LILACS databases up to September 2023 following a published protocol. We identified 73 cases of DENV-induced movement disorders. Cerebellar ataxia was the most common, followed by parkinsonism, opsoclonus-myoclonus-ataxia syndrome, and dystonia. Movement disorders typically developed within 14 days of DENV infectio

Post-dengue subacute thyroiditis in a Peruvian woman: case report and literature review.

Expanded dengue syndrome are unusual conditions, such as subacute thyroiditis (SAT). We present the case of a 38-year-old woman who had dengue without alarm signs for a month, along with cervical pain and increased cervical volume, palpitations, tremor and dysphagia. Hormonal evaluation, ultrasound and thyroid scintigraphy were consistent with SAT. She received corticoids for two months, with remission after four months. SAT is characterized by neck pain, fever and symptoms of thyrotoxicosis. It is associated with viral infections and it comprises a phase of thyrotoxicosis followed by hypothyr

Thyroid Eye Disease Following SARS-CoV-2 Vaccination: Experience of a Case Series.

Background: Thyroid eye disease (TED), or Graves' orbitopathy, is the most common extra-thyroidal manifestation of Graves' disease, but it has only rarely been reported after SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. Autoimmune thyroid disease, including subacute thyroiditis and Graves' disease, has been described following COVID-19 vaccination; we present a case series of TED occurring shortly after different COVID-19 vaccines to provide clinical data on this potential safety signal. Case presentation: We describe five women (mean age 47 years; range 27-69) who developed TED 3-20 days after COVID-19 vaccinatio

Lyme Disease as a Potential Precursor to Anti-N-Methyl-D-Aspartate Receptor Encephalitis: A Case Report.

Anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (anti-NMDAR) encephalitis is a complex neuroinflammatory condition often triggered by underlying factors such as viral infections or malignancies, although idiopathic cases are not uncommon. Here, we present a unique case of a 27-year-old female patient diagnosed with anti-NMDAR encephalitis, where Lyme disease emerges as a plausible yet underrecognized trigger. The patient initially presented to the emergency department (ED) with acute psychosis and was later found to have positive Borrelia burgdorferi immunoglobulin G (IgG) titers, antibodies against the NR

Fever of unknown origin (FUO): a 7-year clinical experience, etiological distribution, and diagnostic approaches.

BACKGROUND: Fever of unknown origin (FUO) remains a significant diagnostic challenge. Changes in patient populations and diagnostic technologies may shift the spectrum of underlying etiologies. This study aimed to examine recent FUO cases at a single tertiary center to identify changes in etiology compared with previous reports and between the pre- and post-COVID-19 pandemic periods, assess the diagnostic value of laboratory and imaging findings, and examine FUO characteristics in underrepresented subpopulations, including people living with HIV (human immunodefficiency virus), those on immuno

Atypical subacute thyroiditis mimicking tuberculosis: a case report and review of literature.

INTRODUCTION: Subacute thyroiditis is a self-limiting condition caused by thyroid inflammation. It usually presents with fever, neck pain and symptoms of thyrotoxicosis. Atypical presentations without neck pain are rare and often lead to misdiagnosis, especially in low-resource settings. CASE REPORT: We report a case of atypical subacute thyroiditis in a man of Middle Eastern descent that was initially misdiagnosed as tuberculosis, with lymphoma, painless sporadic thyroiditis, and laryngeal malignancy being differentials. The patient, a 41-year-old male, presented with progressively worsening

Determination of the Relationship Between the Development and Recurrence of Subacute Thyroiditis and Human Leukocyte Antigen Subtypes.

Background: There are several studies investigating the role of human leukocyte antigens (HLA) in the development and recurrence of subacute thyroiditis (SAT). The HLA subtypes associated with SAT were usually determined in a population-based manner and HLA-B*35, HLA-B*18:01, HLA-C*04:01, and HLA-DRB1*01 were detected to play a role in the disease susceptibility and prognosis. The aim of this study was to determine HLA alleles associated with the tendency of recurrence and prevention of SAT within the Turkish population. Methods: This prospective study was conducted with 51 SAT patients and 72

Thyroid dysfunction in COVID-19.

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected over 772 million people globally. While lung damage is the major contributor to the morbidity and mortality of this disease, the involvement of multiple organs, including the endocrine glands, has been reported. This Review aims to provide an updated summary of evidence regarding COVID-19 and thyroid dysfunction, incorporating highlights of recent advances in the field, particularly in relation to long COVID and COVID-19 vaccination. Since subacute thyroiditis following COVID-19 was first reported in May 2020, thyroid dysfunction associated with COVID-19 has
