Lighting, Cooking, Heating, and Asphyxiation! The Changing Uses and Risks of Manufactured Gas in American Homes, 1870-1940.

The introduction of water gas for house lighting in the United States posed a significant risk to public health in the years between 1875 and World War II. Water gas was superior to the older coal gas used as an illuminant but a far more lethal source of asphyxiation. Its introduction generated a battle between gas companies and public health experts who wished to prohibit use of the new gas. The companies prevailed; Massachusetts and later national data reveal that the victory of water gas led to death rates from asphyxiation that exceeded those from communicable diseases such as measles and

Comparing virulence profile of dominant emm1 and emm12 group A streptococcus strains associated with scarlet fever in Shanghai.

BACKGROUND: An increased incidence of group A Streptococcus-related scarlet fever has been observed in Shanghai since 2011, characterized by the co-circulation of both emm12 and emm1 strains. The comparative virulence potential of these two dominant strains, which is critical for understanding their dynamics and severity, remains largely under researched. This study aimed to systematically compare their virulence determinants to uncover the molecular basis for their successful dissemination. METHODS: As the dominant strains that cause scarlet fever, 16 isolates each of both emm1 and emm12 wer

An improved inverse method for estimating disease transmission rates in epidemics with low-incidence data.

The accurate estimation of time-varying transmission rates is fundamental for understanding infectious disease dynamics and implementing effective public health interventions. To this end, we propose an improved inverse method for estimating time-varying transmission rates in low-incidence settings, where conventional data pre-processing approaches often fail owing to sparse-case observations. To overcome this difficulty, we introduce an exponential B-spline interpolation approach that integrates both continuous and discrete inverse methods. In addition, we incorporate a non-standard finite-di

[emm Typing of Streptococcus pyogenes Isolates: A Real-Time PCR-Based Approach].

In recent years, Streptococcus pyogenes infections have maintained their clinical and epidemiological significance in parallel with the reported increase in invasive group A streptococcal (iGAS) disease and scarlet fever cases. This study aimed to evaluate the coverage of emm typing using a real-time polymerase chain reaction (Rt-PCR) based method which can be used as an alternative to sequencing due to its rapid and cost-effective approach in a potential S.pyogenes outbreak. In addition, determination of emm type distribution was performed to provide updated local epidemiological data and to

Epidemiology of Invasive Group A Streptococcal Infection in Children and its Association With Community Circulation of Scarlet Fever and Respiratory Viral Infections.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus pyogenes (group A Streptococcus, GAS) is a common pediatric pathogen causing a wide range of diseases with significant morbidity and mortality. GAS infections exhibit strong seasonal patterns, and the invasive forms (iGAS) have historically been associated with influenza. Since September 2022, a global outbreak of both iGAS and noninvasive GAS infections has been reported. METHODS: This is a retrospective observational multicentric study of children (<15 years) with iGAS in Catalonia (Spain) from week 40 of 2022 to week 24 of 2023. We collected clinical, epidemiologi

Conservative Management of Acute Nontraumatic Mediastinitis in Children: A Case Series.

Acute nontraumatic mediastinitis is a rare and potentially life-threatening condition. In children, management strategies remain poorly standardized. Here, we describe four pediatric cases: two originating from cervical infections (descending necrotizing mediastinitis [DNM]) and two with indeterminate source. The first two patients presented with febrile otorhinolaryngologic symptoms, one complicated by secondary respiratory failure and the other by possibly toxin-related symptoms. The third presented with varicella and scarlet fever-like rash, complicated by multiorgan involvement secondary t

Unraveling meteorologically influenced recurrence and sequential infection risks among influenza, mumps, scarlet fever, and hand-foot-and-mouth disease: evidence from Shenzhen, China.

BACKGROUND: Meteorological factors are key triggers for infectious diseases in high-density cities, yet their influence on the acute disease patterns of influenza, mumps, scarlet fever, and hand-foot-and-mouth disease (HFMD) remains unclear. This study aims to reveal the variations in relative risk and secondary infection associated with meteorological factors, thereby providing clues for further confirmatory research. METHODS: We analyzed city-wide incidence data from 2012 to 2020 alongside daily meteorological observations. Distributed lag non-linear models (DLNM) were used to quantify expo

The Plague of Athens: Investigating the Enigmatic Epidemic of Ancient Greece.

The ancient Greek historian Thucydides described in his book "History of the Peloponnesian War" one of the earliest epidemics in known human history, the "Plague of Athens". The plague, which lasted from 430-426 B.C., had a death toll estimated at around 75,000 - 100,000. The importance of the plague was immense. Pericles, the historical leader of Athens, was among its victims, and his death was just the beginning of the fall of the Golden Age of Athens. The enormous death toll from the plague weakened Athens, leading to its eventual defeat in the war against Sparta. So far, the cause of this

A Rapid Molecular Detection Tool for Toxigenic M1UK  Streptococcus pyogenes.

BACKGROUND: The gradual replacement of the Streptococcus pyogenes M1global genotype by a newly emergent M1UK variant is a global public health threat warranting increased surveillance. M1UK differs from progenitor M1global genotype by 27 single-nucleotide polymorphisms and is characterized by increased speA superantigen expression in vitro. METHODS: An allele-specific real-time polymerase chain reaction assay was developed for the rapid detection of M1UK strains. The assay was used in combination with whole genome sequencing to determine emm (sub)type distribution for 51 invasive (n = 9) and

[Focus on the outbreaks of invasive group A streptococcal disease].

In recent years, particularly since the outbreaks of scarlet fever and invasive group A streptococcal diseases/infections (iGAS) in several European countries in 2022, iGAS has garnered widespread attention. Recently, Japan experienced an outbreak of a specific type of iGAS, streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS). The outbreak was reported under the label"flesh-eating bacteria,"emphasizing the pathogenic potential of group A streptococcus (GAS). Although GAS is not a newly emerging pathogen and remains susceptible to antibiotics, and guidelines exist for the diagnosis and treatment of vario

Characterization of Streptococcus pyogenes Strains from Tonsillopharyngitis and Scarlet Fever Resurgence, 2023-FIRST Detection of M1UK in Bulgaria.

Recently a resurgence of Streptococcus pyogenes infections has arisen, with concerns around the highly virulent M1UK lineage. Our aim was to characterize S. pyogenes, the immune responses it causes, and to determine the presence of the M1UK lineage in Sofia, Bulgaria. In our study, the infections were confirmed by culture testing or rapid antigen test. Identification was performed by MALDI-TOF and was followed up by antibiotic susceptibility testing (EUCAST). Virulence factors were identified using multiplex PCR and whole genome sequencing (WGS). Immune responses were measured through detectio

Proinflammatory synergy between protease and superantigen streptococcal pyogenic exotoxins.

Streptococcal pyogenic exotoxins (Spe proteins) secreted by Streptococcus pyogenes (group A Streptococcus, GAS) are responsible for scarlet fever and streptococcal toxic shock syndrome. Most Spes are superantigens that cause excessive inflammation by activating large numbers of T cells. However, Streptococcal pyogenic exotoxin B (SpeB) is an exception, which is pro-inflammatory through its protease activity. Prior work shows that SpeB has the potential to cleave bacterial proteins. If cleavage of superantigens results in their inactivation, this gives the possibility that these two classes of

Streptococcal Toxic Shock Syndrome (STSS) Secondary to Monoarticular Septic Arthritis Leading to Multiorgan Failure in a Patient without Underlying Comorbidities: Emphasizing Early Diagnosis and Management Strategies.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcal Toxic Shock Syndrome (STSS) is a life-threatening condition caused by bacterial toxins. The STSS triad encompasses high fever, hypotensive shock, and a "sunburn-like" rash with desquamation. STSS, like Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS), is a rare complication of streptococcal infections caused by Group A Streptococcus (GAS), Streptococcal pyogenes (S. pyogenes). Staphylococcus aureus is the most frequently isolated bacterial species associated with TSS. Risk factors for STSS include older age, skin wounds, recent viral infection with open sores, recent surgery, nasal packing

Old Bug-New Challenges After COVID-19 Pandemic: Severe Invasive Streptococcus pyogenes Infections in Adults-A Single-Center Experience in Poland.

Since the beginning of December 2022, an unusually high number of cases and deaths of Group A Streptococcus (GAS) infections has been reported in many European countries. GAS infection frequently causes mild diseases such as pharyngitis, tonsillitis, impetigo, cellulitis, and scarlet fever. However, in rare instances, GAS infection can lead to invasive, life-threatening conditions like necrotizing fasciitis and toxic shock syndrome, which are associated with high mortality. The aim of the study was to present the clinical course of invasive Streptococcus pyogenes infections and to highlight th

A historic case of relapsing-remitting Alzheimer's disease in an adolescent attributed to scarlet fever.

We draw attention to a historic case of a boy who suffered from scarlet fever (typically caused by the bacterium Streptococcus pyogenes) at age 7 years and went on to develop the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease (AD). His physicians believed that the subsequent dementia was related to the infection. After death at 24 years of age, postmortem brain examination revealed abundant AD-type senile plaques and fibrils, formally confirming AD. Other potential causes of early-onset dementia are discussed, but these are distinct from patient E.H. This case is pertinent regarding the current debate about

Risk factors for invasive group A streptococcal infection in children aged 6 months to 5 years: a case-control study, the Netherlands, February-May 2023.

In 2022, an increase in invasive group A streptococcal (iGAS) infections was observed in the Netherlands. A particular increase was seen among children; therefore, we aimed to assess risk factors for iGAS infection in children aged 6 months to 5 years. A prospective case-control study was conducted between February and May 2023. We approached parents of notified iGAS cases to complete a questionnaire on exposures during 4 weeks prior to disease onset. Controls were recruited via social media and matched to cases on sex and birthyear. Conditional logistic regression was performed to estimate od

The power of story: what Victorian novels can teach us about public health.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The recent uptick in outbreaks of infectious diseases once firmly under control in North America and the UK (including measles, tuberculosis, scarlet fever, and whooping cough) concerns public health professionals in light of increasing vaccine skepticism. Because disease prevention and cure have evolved slowly, the general public may misunderstand the potential impact of rejecting vaccines and need stories that will clarify the risks. RECENT FINDINGS: Studying history and literature reveals that modern citizens of wealthy, industrialized nations have forgotten the emotiona
