Retrospective analysis of 2627 and prospective analysis of 289 inpatients (mean age: 57 years) of the Department of Internal Medicine, University of Berne, disclosed euthyroid goiter in 33.9%. 65% of the patients had urinary iodine excretion below 100 microgram per gram creatinine. Thus, iodination of salt (raised to 10 mg potassium iodide per kg in 1962) is still inadequate. 1.4% of the inpatients had hyperthyroidism. The experience of the Medical University of South Carolina with Hashimoto's thyroiditis revealed an 8.3 per cent incidence of carcinoma. The most common type of carcinoma was an associated lymphoma. There was an additional 8.3 per cent incidence of a benign adenoma. Needle biopsy as a mechanism for diagnosing Hashimoto's disease, we believe, is inaccurate. A larger aliquot of tissue should be removed for the pathologist if there is a suspicion of an associated tumor. An open biopsy permits the pathologist to make an accurate diagnosis with a minimal amount of morbidity.

The authors studied 434 cases of thyroid carcinoma. The sex distribution showed a strong predominance of women (67%). The highest percentage (47%) appeared between 30 and 49 years. Histologically the folliculo-papillary aspect predominated. Thyroid cancer was associated with the following thyreopathies: in 75% of the cases with an anisofollicular adenomatosis, in 12% with a chronic thyroiditis, and in 0.4% with Graves's disease. Only in 13% of the cases no association was found with other thyreopathies. Between 1967 and 1975 no increase of the number of thyroid carcinomas was found.

During 1974 and 1975 thirty patients with subacute thyroiditis referred to us were treated with diftalone (Aladione), a new non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, at a daily oral dose of 750 mg. The average treatment lasted 39 days (range 15-100), the mean age of the patients was 43-5 years (range: 22-70). The clinical and pathologic findings for 35 patients with malignant lymphoma presenting in the thyroid are reviewed. The lymphomas tended to occur in females with a median age of 65 years and clinically were manifested by a mass in the neck. Inbred male and female Buffalo strain rats were started at 4, 8, 12, 24, or 52 weeks of age on 0.06% 3'-methyl-4-dimethylaminoazobenzene in a low-protein, choline-deficient diet. Eight-week-old males and females were the most susceptible to the development of chronic thyroiditis, but females were more susceptible than the males. Female rats of other ages developed a slightly higher incidence of thyroiditis than the male rats, the difference being most noticeable for rats 12 weeks old.
