Unilateral Graves' Orbitopathy in a Patient with Marine-Lenhart Syndrome: A case report.

Thyroid eye disease (TED) is the most common symptoms of Graves' disease. This condition commonly manifests bilaterally and symmetrically. The most prominent symptoms are lid retraction, exophthalmos and diplopia. Rarely, individuals with Graves' disease show asymmetrical or unilateral eye symptoms. Marine-Lenhart syndrome is a variant of Graves' disease with occasional hyperactive nodules. A 36-year-old male patient presented to the endocrinology outpatient department at a tertiary care hospital in Muscat, Oman, in 2022 with unilateral eye proptosis and was subsequently found to have Graves'

A novel approach to explore metabolic diseases: Neddylation.

Protein post translational modification (PTM) is the main regulatory mechanism for eukaryotic cell function, among which ubiquitination is based on the reversible degradation of proteins by the ubiquitin proteasome system to regulate cell homeostasis. The neural precursor cell expressed developmental downregulated gene 8 (NEDD8) is a kind of ubiquitin like protein that shares 80 % homology and 60 % identity with ubiquitin. The PTM process by covalently binding NEDD8 to lysine residues in proteins is called neddylation. The neddylation reaction could be regulated by NEDD8, its precursors, subst

Post-thyroidectomy hypoparathyroidism: A clinical surgical dilemma.

Thyroid dysfunction directly affects human health and overall well-being; various approaches are available for the treatment of thyroid diseases, including conservative measures and surgical interventions. Despite advancements in conservative treatment, surgery remains the preferred option. Hypoparathyroidism is the primary cause of hospitalization after thyroidectomy, leading to cost-related concerns and a detrimental impact on patients' overall quality of life. Postoperative hypoparathyroidism can result in hypocalcemia, and these are challenging conditions that must be identified promptly t

Modeling Clinical Radioiodine Uptake By Using Organoids Derived From Differentiated Thyroid Cancer.

Radioiodine-refractory differentiated thyroid cancer (RAI-R DTC) accounts for the vast majority of thyroid-related mortality and, until recently, there were limited preclinical models for iodine uptake prediction. In the current study, we aim to establish a primary tumor-derived organoid model of DTC and predict radioiodine (RAI) uptake of tumor residue. The genotypic and phenotypic features between organoid and parental tissue were compared. The RAI uptake assay was used to evaluate the organoid's RAI uptake capacity, and related patients' RAI whole-body scans were used to verify the assay's

Localization in primary hyperparathyroidism.

Primary hyperparathyroidism is the main cause of hypercalcemia, resulting predominantly from parathyroid adenomas followed by hyperplasia. Diagnosis relies on clinical and biochemical parameters. Accurate pre-operative localization is mandatory for better surgical outcome. Various non-invasive imaging modalities includes cervical ultrasound, radionuclide scintigraphy with 99mTc-Methoxyisobutyl isonitrile combined with SPECT/CT, 4DCT, MRI and 18F-Choline PET/CT. Functional imaging has shown higher accuracy in localization especially in ectopic parathyroid adenomas and persistent or recurrent hy

Two-Step Surgical Strategy for Parathyroid Carcinoma: A Single-Center Experience.

Parathyroid carcinoma (PC) is a rare endocrine malignancy that poses significant diagnostic challenges due to its resemblance to benign conditions. This case series describes the clinical presentation, diagnosis, management, and short-term outcomes of four male patients (aged 54, 65, 73, and 74 years) with primary hyperparathyroidism and hypercalcemia. The preoperative diagnosis of PC remains challenging; suspicion should arise in cases of severe hypercalcemia, elevated parathyroid hormone levels, and the presence of a mass on imaging or during surgery. All patients underwent an initial locali

Mechanistic insights regarding neuropsychiatric and neuropathologic impacts of air pollution.

Air pollution is a significant environmental health risk for urban areas and developing countries. Air pollution may contribute to the incidence of cardiopulmonary and metabolic diseases. Evidence also points to the role of air pollution in worsening or developing neurological and neuropsychiatric conditions. Inhaled pollutants include compositionally differing mixtures of respirable gaseous and particulate components of varied sizes, solubilities, and chemistry. Inhalation of combustibles and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or other irritant particulate matter (PM) may trigger lung sensory

Bilateral Cystic Endosalpingiosis in Cervical Lymph Nodes Mimicking Metastatic Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma Morphologically on Cytology: A Case Report and Literature Review of Diagnostic Challenges.

The presence of cystic lymph nodes in the neck can present a challenging differential diagnosis, with considerations often including metastatic papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), cystic squamous cell carcinoma, and congenital cysts. The cytologic overlap between benign Müllerian inclusions and PTC features adds complexity, especially in unusual locations. A 45-year-old woman with a history of ovarian serous borderline tumor (SBT) and non-invasive Müllerian implants presented with cystic lymphadenopathy in the neck. Imaging revealed multiple suspicious, partially cystic lymph nodes. Fine-needle

Thyroid metastasis of clear renal cell carcinoma: a case report and review of the literature.

The thyroid is a rare site for finding tumor metastases. Renal, colorectal, pulmonary, and mammary origin are the most frequent primary neoplasms. Clinical suspicion, early diagnosis, and active surveillance are important during follow-up. Thyroid ultrasound and fine needle aspiration thyroid ultrasound are crucial during follow-up. We present a case of a 66-year-old male who was referred to our Endocrinology and Nutrition Department of the Hospital General Universitario Santa Lucía due to a multinodular goiter. The patient had no symptoms of hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism. No weight loss o

Whereas pancreatic masses are often difficult to detect with transabdominal ultrasound, cross-sectional imaging features high sensitivity for the pancreatic tumors. However, increasing availability of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has led to a surge in the detection of benign or precancerous pancreatic lesions. The medical history is characteristic only for two entities. A history of acute or chronic pancreatitis favors a benign pseudocyst while weight loss or jaundice are suggestive of malignancy. More challenging is the classification of asymptomatic cysts, which often require extensive w
