It was found in a cross sectional case-control study to have a risk factor 3.2 times higher in diabetic than non diabetic indigenes of Borno State of Nigeria. BACKGROUND: Malnutrition-related diabetes mellitus is a distinct clinical entity subdivided into protein-deficient diabetes mellitus (PDDM) and fibrocalculus pancreatic diabetes (FCPD). Whereas FCPD has obvious pancreatitis manifested by pancreatic duct calculi, the evidence for involvement of the pancreas in PDDM is limited to the presence of ketosis-resistant hyperglycaemia.
METHODS: We studied 10 patients with PDDM biochemically and radiologically. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography was performed to determine if they had any evidence of chronic pancreatitis.

We have examined 100 consecutive insulin-treated diabetic patients from the Diabetic Clinic at Mekelle Hospital in Tigray, Northern Ethiopia; an area of low socio-economic status recently affected by severe famine. The study was conducted over a six month period (1997). Mean age of onset of diabetes was 27 +/- 10 y (SD) and there was a male excess (3.1:1.0). A retrospective review of 1,089 diabetes mellitus admitted to the metabolic ward of Chang Gung Memorial Hospital was performed to screen for malnutrition-related diabetes mellitus (MRDM). OBJECTIVE: To search for evidence of MRDM among Ethiopian patients.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We reviewed the records from March 1976 to January 1991 of 1835 Ethiopian diabetic patients registered consecutively in the Diabetic Clinic of Yekatit 12 Hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
