Vaccine-preventable disease outbreaks in schools, part 2: pertussis, meningococcal disease, diphtheria, poliomyelitis, hepatitis A, and rotavirus infection.

Schools are essential elements during childhood and adolescence, not only for providing education, but also for promoting the personal development and socialization of students. School attendance almost always takes place in classrooms and in close proximity for several hours daily. Students also interact with students from other classrooms and schools through participation in sports and extracurricular activities. These characteristics render the schools ideal environments for the transmission of vaccine-preventable diseases. We reviewed 57 articles published from 2000 to June 2, 2025, presen

Self-reported vaccine uptake across six infectious diseases among gay, bisexual, transgender, and non-binary individuals in Australia: findings from a 2024 national survey.

BACKGROUND: Gay and bisexual men who have sex with men (GBMSM) and trans and gender diverse people (TGD) are disproportionately affected by several vaccine-preventable diseases. However, research on vaccine uptake for both sexually transmitted and non-sexually transmitted infections among GBMSM and TGD remains limited. Understanding differences in uptake between selective (e.g. hepatitis A; meningococcal; human papillomavirus; HPV; mpox) and universal (e.g. influenza, COVID-19) is important for informing future immunisation policy and strategies. METHODS: We surveyed past vaccine uptake among

Septic Polyarthritis Caused by Neisseria meningitidis: A Rare Presentation in Japan.

Neisseria meningitidis is a Gram-negative diplococcus that rarely causes invasive diseases in Japan. We report a case of polyarticular meningococcal septic arthritis in an immunocompetent 62-year-old Japanese man. After 3 days of fever, he developed pain in the dorsum of the right hand and right shoulder. Computed tomography revealed effusions in the right wrist and acromioclavicular joint. Blood cultures grew N. meningitidis serogroup Y, sequence type 1655. A PCR assay detected the 16S rRNA gene of N. meningitidis in culture-negative wrist synovial fluid. Treatment with ceftriaxone followed b

Complement C5 inhibitors as add-on rescue treatment in severe AQP4-antibody neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder attacks: a case series and literature review.

Acute attacks of aquaporin-4 antibody neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (AQP4-Ab NMOSD) are typically managed with intravenous methylprednisolone, with therapeutic plasma exchange (PLEX) reserved for severe episodes. Despite these interventions, a subset of patients fails to respond and may sustain significant neurological disability. Complement C5 inhibitors, currently approved for long-term relapse prevention, have recently gained attention as a potential rescue therapy by rapidly inhibiting the terminal complement cascade, thus preventing downstream astrocytic injury. We report three p

Podcast: Immune Persistence After Primary Vaccination with MenQuadfi.

Invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) remains a serious global health concern. Although incidence is generally low, the disease progresses rapidly and carries high fatality rates of 10-15%, with survivors often experiencing long-term sequelae including hearing loss, neurological impairment, or limb amputations. These consequences highlight the need for effective and durable vaccination strategies. IMD incidence and serogroup distribution vary geographically. The highest burden occurs in the African meningitis belt, historically dominated by serogroup A, though recent outbreaks have increasingly

Presumed Meningococcal meningitis with Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome from a rural Ethiopia: a fatal case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Meningitis is a significant global health threat, affecting millions and causing numerous deaths each year. Neisseria meningitides disproportionately affects resource-poor countries. Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome (WFS), a severe complication involving endotoxin-mediated adrenal damage, further worsens patient outcomes. CASE PRESENTATION: A 35-year-old unvaccinated woman from Garbo, Somali, Ethiopia presented with a 24-hour history of fever, headache, and neck pain, progressing to altered mental status, right-sided weakness, and respiratory distress. Examination

Pre-clinical efficacy of a candidate outer membrane vesicle gonococcal vaccine in comparison with 4CMenB.

Neisseria gonorrhoeae causes 82 million global cases of gonorrhoea annually. Multidrug-resistant gonococci threaten to make gonorrhoea untreatable. Meningococcal vaccines MeNZB and 4CMenB (Bexsero), containing Neisseria meningitidis group B detergent-extracted outer membrane vesicles (dOMV), cross-protect against gonorrhoea with 31-59% effectiveness. We hypothesised that gonococcal OMV-based vaccines would have greater efficacy against gonorrhoea than meningococcal vaccines. We developed native OMV (nOMV) candidate Neisseria vaccines from gonococcal strains GC_0817560 and FA1090, and meningoco

Purulent meningococcal pericarditis with cardiac tamponade in a Hajj pilgrim: A diagnostic challenge of anchoring bias on MERS-CoV.

We report a rare case of purulent pericarditis with cardiac tamponade due to Neisseria meningitidis serogroup W135 in a 15-year-old pilgrim returning from the Hajj. Initial suspicion of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) was prompted by pneumonia and camel milk exposure, misdirecting the diagnosis. The patient developed cardiac tamponade requiring urgent pericardiocentesis; 16S rRNA PCR confirmed N. meningitidis W135 despite negative cultures. He recovered fully with ceftriaxone and colchicine. This case highlights diagnostic anchoring bias in travel medicine and the need

Vaccination Adherence and Barriers Among Non-healthcare Workers and Volunteers During the Hajj.

BACKGROUND: Hajj is one of the world's largest annual mass gatherings and is associated with increased risks of communicable diseases. While healthcare workers are subject to mandatory vaccination policies, non-healthcare workers and volunteers lack clear immunization requirements. This cross-sectional online survey assessed vaccination adherence, identified barriers, and generated evidence to inform the development of inclusive vaccination policies for non-healthcare workers and volunteers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 68 non-healthcare workers and volu

An unusual presentation of meningococcal meningitis.

PURPOSE: To present a unique case of meningococcal meningitis initially manifesting as isolated ocular symptoms in a 19-year-old contact lens wearer. OBSERVATIONS: The patient presented with a two-day history of unilateral red and painful eye without systemic symptoms, leading to a preliminary diagnosis of contact lens-associated keratitis. A bacterial swab from the inferior fornix returned positive for N. meningitidis, prompting further evaluation. Diagnostic workup by the internal medicine service supported the diagnosis of meningitis and the patient was treated according to local guideline

Medial Patellofemoral Ligament Reconstruction for Patellar Instability in a Patient with Below-Knee Amputation: A Case Report.

CASE: A 15-year-old girl with a right below-knee amputation (due to meningococcal septicemia and purpura fulminans) presented with patellar instability and Type D trochlear dysplasia. Management was complicated by extensive scarring and 8 prior residual limb revisions. To address instability, the patient underwent medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction using an ipsilateral semitendinosus autograft, following MRI verification of tendon viability. At 12-month follow-up, stability was restored, allowing successful return to active prosthesis use and mobility without complications.

Adherence to recommended immunization schedule during adolescence: findings of a cross-sectional study in the Southern part of Italy.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a pivotal life stage during which individuals develop health-related attitudes and behaviours that frequently persist into adulthood, making it a crucial period for shaping long-term engagement with preventive care. Despite Italy's national recommendations for adolescent vaccines (HPV, MenACWY, and the dTap-IPV booster), coverage gaps persist. By analyzing the self-reported vaccination history of university students, this study aims to assess adolescent vaccine adherence, willingness to vaccinate and their predictors to better inform targeted public health interventi
