Sustained salivary IgG but short-lived IgA responses following primary and booster MenACWY-TT vaccination in older adults.

Carriage of Neisseria meningitidis is essential in meningococcal transmission and is a prerequisite for invasive meningococcal disease (IMD). Meningococcal conjugate vaccines have been suggested to reduce acquisition of carriage in adolescents and young adults, contributing to herd protection. Mucosal immunity is considered key in protection against colonization. While mucosal antibody responses following parenteral meningococcal conjugate vaccination have been described in infants, adolescents and young adults, data in older adults, who are at increased risk for infectious diseases including

Use of the GSK MenACWY-CRM/MenB-4C Pentavalent Meningococcal Vaccine Among Persons Aged ≥10 Years: Recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices - United States, 2025.

Meningococcal disease is a serious bacterial infection caused by Neisseria meningitidis. Serogroups B, C, W, and Y cause the majority of cases of this disease in the United States. These serogroups are targeted by different meningococcal vaccines available in the United States. Two quadrivalent (serogroups A, C, W, and Y) meningococcal conjugate vaccines (MenACWY) (MenACWY-CRM [Menveo, GSK] and MenACWY-TT [MenQuadfi, Sanofi Pasteur]) and two serogroup B meningococcal vaccines (MenB) (MenB-4C [Bexsero, GSK] and MenB-FHbp [Trumenba, Pfizer]) are licensed for use in the United States and recommen

Estimating influenza A subtype ratios among critical care admissions in England.

We analysed weekly influenza A intensive care unit (ICU) or high dependency unit (HDU) admissions reported by age group and subtype by NHS trusts in England through mandatory surveillance during the 2023-2024 influenza season. We investigated whether subtype reporting varied with patient age group, NHS trust type and region. We estimated the subtype ratio and explored whether this estimate varied among subsets of trusts grouped by the regularity of subtype reporting. Our aim was to explore factors relating to subtype reporting and investigate how these affect subtype ratio estimates. 112 NHS t

The impact of introducing meningococcal C/ACWY booster vaccination among adolescents in Germany: a dynamic transmission modelling study.

BACKGROUND: In Germany, primary vaccination against invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) serogroup C aims to reduce the highest burden of IMD in infants aged 12–23 month. Due to another IMD-peak in adolescents, we modelled the potential impact of introducing adolescent boosters with conjugate meningococcal C or ACWY (MenC/MenACWY) vaccines. METHODS: We built an age- and serogroup-structured dynamic-transmission model for Germany, which we calibrated to national surveillance data in 2005–2019. We simulated five vaccination scenarios of either continuing with the current MenC primary vaccination

Gene exchange between Neisseria meningitidis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae.

Genetic exchange between Neisseria meningitidis (NM) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) has not been well studied. This study aimed to investigate evidence of genetic exchanges between these two species. All coincident paired NM and NG isolates cultured from pharyngeal swabs collected from a sexual health clinic in Sydney in 2021 underwent whole-genome sequencing. A gene-by-gene analysis of the 47 NM-NG pairs identified 184 instances where the ancestry of the gene revealed intermixing between the two species. Incorporating the gene phylogenies demonstrated that these events occurred across a wide

Assessing the potential impact of the 20-valent (PCV20) and an adult 21-valent (aPCV21) pneumococcal conjugate vaccine on invasive pneumococcal disease in England.

BACKGROUND: Several higher-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) have been licensed recently, including a 20-valent PCV (PCV20) for children and adults and 21-valent PCV (aPCV21) licensed for adults. We assessed the potential for aPCV21 to further reduce the burden of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) in England. METHODS: IPD cases are electronically reported to the UKHSA and pneumococcal isolates are routinely submitted to the UKHSA national reference laboratory for confirmation and serotyping. We used national enhanced surveillance data for all IPD cases confirmed in England (July

Controlled Human Infection of Healthy Adults With Lyophilized Neisseria lactamica Induces Asymptomatic, Immunogenic Nasopharyngeal Carriage in the United Kingdom and Mali.

BACKGROUND: Carriage of Neisseria lactamica (Nlac), a harmless nasopharyngeal commensal, correlates inversely with carriage of Neisseria meningitidis (Nmen), a common cause of meningitis and sepsis outbreaks in sub-Saharan Africa. Nasally administered lyophilized Nlac (LyoNlac) might interrupt carriage and transmission of Nmen in sub-Saharan settings without requirement of a cold chain, but whether LyoNlac can establish colonization is undetermined. METHODS: Healthy adult volunteers aged 18-45 years were inoculated intranasally with 104-107 colony forming units (CFU) of reconstituted, lyophil
