1. Immunochemical cross-reactivity, but not identity, has been demonstrated between bovine parathyroid hormone and an antigen in biologically active extracts of human parathyroid tissue by quantitative C' fixation and C' fixation inhibition. 2. An antigen that fixes C' with rabbit antibody to bovine parathyroid hormone has been found in urea extracts of six human non-parathyroid neoplasms associated with a hypercalcemic syndrome mimicking primary hyperparathyroidism. Comparable extracts of control tissues and other tumors were serologically negative. 3. It is concluded that the tumor antigen i

Clinical and pathological findings in 100 cases of acromegaly were reviewed. Great individual variation in manifestations of the disease was apparent. The chronic course was evidenced by 30 patients presenting symptoms unrelated to acromegaly. Headache, visual disturbances, arthritis and elevated blood pressure were common. The incidence of diabetes mellitus, thyroid and adrenal dysfunction was similar to that reported in other series. Gonadal disturbances were frequent. Two patients had galactorrhea and two had hyperparathyroidism. Radiologically, pituitary fossae were normal in 24. Pituitary

In a series of cases of Paget's disease of the bone, two types of cells not previously described were observed in material aspirated from bone marrow in areas of osteitis deformans. One type was mononuclear, the other was giant, multinucleated and syncytial. They have been identified as osteoblasts and osteoclasts, respectively. The identification was based mainly on correlation with the histologic picture of osteitis deformans and of normal-growing bones as seen in section studies. Both osteoblasts and osteoclasts were recovered in aspirated bone marrow material in other instances of metaboli

The results of postmortem examination of cases of hereditary osteopetrosis of the rabbit together with histologic observations on organs and tissues other than the skeleton have been described. The principal findings were, first, those associated with the characteristic progressive anemia of the disease, such as extramedullary foci of hemopoietic tissue, lymphoid hyperplasia, and the occurrence of hemosiderin in the liver, spleen, and lymph nodes. There was a widespread tissue distribution of intense phosphatase staining and of fine calcium deposition, as would be expected in the circumstances

These studies have shown that the bones of guinea pigs given daily injections of parathormone from the age of 2 to 7 days to the age of 110 to 120 days, show relatively very little effect after receiving 20 units daily during the last 65 to 87 days of treatment. But it is probable that their bones underwent decalcification early in the treatment and that subsequently the parathormone, continued at the same dosage, did not maintain the effects on the bones. Healing finally occurred despite it. The bones of guinea pigs treated with intermittent injections of large doses of parathormone from the

1. On a low calcium intake hypercalcemia tended to disappear in chronic hyperparathyroidism on a given dose of parathormone (as large as 6 units per kg.), apparently due to the reduction of a readily available calcium reserve. An increase of either the calcium intake or of the daily dose of parathormone caused a rise of serum calcium and symptoms of overdosage. 2. Hypocalcemia developed in chronic hyperparathyroidism in young puppies on a low calcium diet. Tetany occurred at a calcium level which was higher and a phosphorus level which was lower than in tetania parathyreopriva of young puppies

These experiments have shown that parathyroid extract (parathormone Collip) can be injected into puppies in increasing amounts for long periods without fatal results. Thus time is allowed for bone changes to develop. Long continued injection leads to progressive decalcification and resorption of the existing bone, to fibrous replacement of the marrow, and to the production of the other features characteristic of ostitis fibrosa. Deformities eventually appear. It is safe to assume that the bone changes produced by hyperparathyroidization have the same pathogenesis as those observed in clinical
