Automated Segmentation of the Pituitary and Pineal Glands.

The pituitary and pineal glands are two small yet critical brain structures that help to modulate the human endocrine system. Unfortunately, very little research has been devoted to segmenting the pineal gland, and existing methods for pituitary segmentation focus only on the entire gland without distinguishing between its two lobes. To fill this gap, this work presents the first deep-learning-based tool for segmentation of both the pineal and pituitary glands in T1-weighted MRI. A five-fold cross-validation study was conducted on a manually labeled training dataset and produced segmentations

Unusual Dual Brain Tumor Morphologies in an MEN1 Patient: A Case Report of Diagnostic Challenges and Methylation Insights.

Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 1 (MEN1) is an autosomal dominant disorder commonly associated with tumor development in the parathyroid glands, pancreas, and pituitary gland. While pituitary adenomas are frequently observed in MEN1 patients, the presence of additional tumors within the pituitary gland is unusual. Moreover, the co-occurrence of a pituitary adenoma with an atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumor (ATRT) has not been previously documented. ATRT is a rare, aggressive neoplasm predominantly affecting young children and is typically associated with inactivating mutations in the SMARCB1 o

Central sensitivity to thyroid hormone indices and glucose metabolism disorders.

The central sensitivity to thyroid hormone shows the negative feedback capacity of free thyroxine levels to the pituitary gland. Clinical studies have continuously demonstrated the correlation between the central sensitivity to thyroid hormone and impaired glucose metabolic homeostasis, and positive or negative relationship were found. Different indices selected to assess central thyroid hormone sensitivity, different risk events concerned, and ethnic reasons may be responsible for the conflicting results between studies. This narrative review combined with the latest research progress to demon

Pituitary Gland Metastases As the Initial Presentation of Lung Adenocarcinoma: A Case Report.

Pituitary gland metastases (PMs) are rare and typically asymptomatic, often discovered incidentally in patients with known malignancies. Symptomatic PMs as the initial presentation of cancer are uncommon. We report a case of a 52-year-old woman with no prior oncologic history who presented with progressive unilateral vision loss, headaches, and systemic symptoms. Imaging revealed a sellar and suprasellar mass, and endocrine evaluation indicated both anterior and posterior pituitary dysfunction. Surgical resection and histopathological analysis confirmed metastatic adenocarcinoma of the lung. T

Case Report: Rare Müllerian malformation assisted by digital 3D CT reconstruction technology for diagnosis and treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Menstruation marks a significant developmental milestone, typically indicating healthy and normal pubertal changes in females. Primary amenorrhea can arise from various causes, including outflow tract abnormalities, resistant endometrium, primary ovarian insufficiency, and disorders of the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, or other endocrine organs. This report presents an exceptionally rare Müllerian malformation that does not conform perfectly to existing classification systems, necessitating an individualized management approach. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 12-ye

Progression From Isolated Posterior Pituitary Dysfunction to Combined Anterior Hormone Deficiencies With Pituitary Stalk Enlargement in Suspected Lymphocytic Hypophysitis: A Case Report.

Lymphocytic hypophysitis (LYH) is a rare autoimmune inflammatory disorder of the pituitary gland that can involve either the anterior or posterior lobe, or both. In some cases, it initially presents with isolated central diabetes insipidus (CDI) and later progresses to anterior pituitary hormone deficiencies. However, longitudinal descriptions of this progression are limited. A 66-year-old woman presented with dry mouth, polydipsia, and polyuria. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed symmetrical pituitary enlargement with loss of the posterior pituitary bright spot, thickening of the pitui

Pituitary IgG4 inflammatory infiltrates: a shared finding in different pituitary conditions.

Over the last decade, IgG4-related hypophysitis (IgG4-RH) has been increasingly recognised as a manifestation of IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD). Concurrently, several cases of 'isolated IgG4-RH' have been reported, without any features of typical manifestations of IgG4-RD. Furthermore, IgG4 histological inflammatory infiltrates are being reported in other pituitary pathologies leading to some diagnostic confusion as to the possibility of it being a manifestation of IgG4-RD. This paper examines recent published cases of IgG4-RH to provide an updated understanding of the clinical landscape of Ig

Endocrine system disturbances in children with inherited metabolic diseases: a narrative review.

Inborn metabolic diseases (IMDs) represent a diverse and complex group of rare disorders, typically resulting from variants in genes that encode specific enzymes or cofactors, leading to reduced or absent enzymatic activity. These conditions commonly disrupt one or more metabolic pathways, often impacting multiple organ systems from early childhood. Clinicians should consider the possibility of an IMD when an endocrine abnormality is accompanied by other unexplained clinical signs or in presence of combined endocrinopathies. While some IMDs associated with endocrine dysfunction in children and

A pediatric case of central diabetes insipidus and hypopituitarism after COVID-19 suspected with lymphocytic hypophysitis with positive anti-rabphilin-3A antibodies.

Lymphocytic hypophysitis (LYH) is a rare autoimmune disorder characterized by lymphocytic infiltration of the pituitary gland, leading to central diabetes insipidus (CDI) and hypopituitarism. Although distinguishing LYH from other diseases presenting with pituitary enlargement is challenging, the use of anti-rabphilin-3A antibody (RPH3A-Ab) in the diagnosis of LYH has been recently reported. Case reports of LYH following coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection in adult and adolescent patients have been accumulated. Here, we present the first case confirming the presence of RPH3A-Abs in p

Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 1 Presenting as Recurrent Overt Gastrointestinal Bleeding and Ulceration: A Diagnostic Challenge.

Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) is a multisystem endocrine disorder marked by tumors of the parathyroids, pancreatic islet cells, and pituitary gland. Although most cases are inherited through an autosomal dominant pattern, a proportion arises through sporadic mutation. As the clinical presentation is highly variable, it often leads to diagnostic delay in patients with de novo mutations. We report a 48-year-old man with no family history and a past medical history of renal calculi with intermittent hematuria. Over several months, he had multiple hospitalizations due to progressive e

A Case of Transient Central Hypothyroidism Coinciding With Reversible Cerebral Vasoconstriction Syndrome.

Reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome (RCVS) is characterized by reversible segmental constriction and dilation of the major cerebral arteries and is typically unrelated to endocrine dysfunction. Central hypothyroidism (CH), a rare form of hypothyroidism caused by insufficient thyroid-stimulating hormone secretion from the pituitary gland, is usually associated with pituitary pathology. Here, we report a case of transient CH coinciding with RCVS, which to our knowledge has not been previously described in the literature. A 45-year-old woman presented with recurrent cerebral infarction

Acromegaly and genetics.

Acromegaly is a rare endocrine disorder characterized by the excessive production of growth hormone (GH) in adulthood, usually (95 percent of the time) due to a benign tumor in the pituitary gland (PitNET). Although GNAS variants are the most prevalent cause of sporadic somatotroph tumors, these can rarely occur in a familial setting (5 percent). Hereditary GH-secreting PitNETs can manifest as isolated tumors, such as in familial isolated pituitary adenoma (FIPA) including cases with AIP variants or GPR101 microduplications, (X- linked acrogigantism) or can be part of syndromes like multiple e

Giant Prolactinoma Resistant to High-Dose Cabergoline in a Young Male Lost to Follow-Up.

Pituitary adenomas are neoplasms of the adenohypophysis (anterior pituitary gland) that can cause a multitude of symptoms secondary to the hormones they secrete (functioning adenomas) or mass effect on the optic chiasma (non-functioning adenomas). Functioning adenomas can secrete prolactin, growth hormone, adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) or thyroid-stimulating hormone, with some adenomas co-secreting more than one. This can lead to symptoms of prolactinoma, acromegaly, Cushing's disease, and TSHoma dependent on the elevated hormone. In non-functioning adenomas, visual changes, and headache

Association between Human Leukocyte Antigen Alleles and Endocrine Disorders in a Cohort of 895 Patients from Russian Clinical Population.

Endocrine disorders represent a serious public health problem and frequently can be caused by genetic factors or their combination with environmental and lifestyle factors. Assessment of relevant genetic factors is important to estimate the risk of endocrine pathologies in an individual before their manifestation. Identification of genetic variations in proteins of the major histocompatibility complex is important with regard to the autoimmune nature of many endocrine pathologies, including type 1 diabetes. In this study, we investigated the relationship between human leukocyte antigen (HLA) g

Pathologic Findings of Cranial Abscesses Involving the Pituitary Gland in Free-Ranging White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in Pennsylvania.

Intracranial abscesses are a common cause of morbidity and mortality in neurologic free-ranging white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). These infections are typically attributed to Trueperella pyogenes and occur most often in adult males with concurrent antler and skull infections. A subset of intracranial abscesses in white-tailed deer are localized to the pituitary gland, with previously described reports in five white-tailed deer. In this case series, five additional free-ranging white-tailed deer in Pennsylvania were diagnosed with pituitary abscesses at necropsy. Two cases were female

A DESCRIPTION OF ADDISON'S DISEASE, AND ITS NEUROPSYCHIATRIC MANIFESTATIONS COMPARING THE DISEASE AS IT IS NOW TO THE DISEASE AS EXPERIENCED BY SAINT ELIZABETH OF THE TRINITY IN 1906.

We describe Addison's disease, which is the disease caused by Adrenal Gland Insufficiency. Addison's disease is an uncommon endocrine disorder characterised by inadequate production of hormones, predominantly aldosterone and cortisol, by the adrenal glands. This condition occurs due to damage to the adrenal cortex, the region responsible for hormone synthesis. Clinical manifestations of Addison's disease are often insidious and nonspecific, including symptoms such as myasthenia, persistent fatigue, unintentional weight loss, hypotension, and hyperpigmentation of the skin, especially in areas s

Relationship between specific microRNA expression and radioresistant conditions in HL60 acute myeloid leukemia cells.

BACKGROUND: The efficacy of cervical cancer screening programs is dependent on the participation rate. To increase participation among women not attending cervical cancer screening, self-collected samples for detection of high-risk human papillomavirus (hr-HPV) may be an option. The aims of this study were: to investigate the response rate to sending a self-collected vaginal sample for hr-HPV mRNA detection to long-term non-attendees; the compliance with follow-up among women positive for HPV in the self-sample; the prevalence of cervical dysplasia (high grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (H
