This study was carried out to document the postpubertal presentation of congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), to elaborate the diagnostic criteria for it, and to investigate family members of CAH patients. Serum 17-hydroxyprogesterone (17OHP) was measured in normal women and 25 hirsute oligomenorrheic patients, five of whom were shown to have CAH. These five CAH patients, as a group, had significantly elevated levels of 17OHP when compared to normal and hirsute women, although the other 20 hirsute oligomenorrheic women also had higher levels of 17OHP than the follicular phase control subjects.

The vaginal hormone cytology and the serum estrogen levels (as determined by radioimmunoassay) of 39 post-menopausal patients were compared. We report a simple and direct procedure for the measurement of circulating free testosterone concentrations by using saliva as a matrix rather than serum. There is a close correlation between saliva testosterone values measured by radioimmunoassay, calculated values of free testosterone, and free testosterone estimated by equilibrium dialysis. The clinical, structural and functional characteristics of ovarian tumours were studied in 10 mares. Five additional examples of partial deletion of the short arm of the X chromosome are reported. All of the patients had short stature. The presence of the other stigmata of Turner syndrome, including ovarian dysfunction, appeared to depend on the location of the deletion. Chromosomal analysis of girls with short stature (less than 140 cm), normal pubertal development, and regular menses may reveal that minor deletions of the short arm of the X chromosome are more frequent than has been previously reported.

Twenty-seven patients with advanced ovarian cancer were treated with a total of 80 courses of cis-dichlorodiammine platinum (II) (cisplatin). The doses in three courses were less than 50 mg/m2, in 64 courses they were 50 mg/m2, and in eight courses they were 100 mg/m2. In addition, five courses of low-dose daily treatment (20 mg/m2 for five days) were administered. Twelve patients received cisplatin alone, 12 received cisplatin and cyclophosphamide (750 mg/m2), and three patients received cisplatin with other drugs. To ascertain the validity of hormonal theories of human homosexuality, which are based on animal research, this article reviews psychoendocrine data on lesbian and transsexual women. Mechanisms of possible pathophysiological importance in primary dysmenorrhea are discussed. Hyperactivity of the myometrium with accompanying uterine ischemia is considered to be of central importance in the causation of pain. Prostaglandins seem to be involved to a large extent in the development of the myometrial hyperactivity. Other mechanisms of possible importance such as ovarian hormones, cervical factors, vasopressin, nerves, and psychological factors can well act ultimately through prostaglandin release but an action directly on the myometrium and blood flow may also occur.

Ovarian endocrine function in endometriosis was studied in 19 women before, during, and after treatment with danazol. Striking abnormalities were seen during treatment. Serum estradiol (E2) and testosterone (T) levels increased markedly, while follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), and prolactin were unaffected. Prolactin and pituitary gonadotropin levels were studied in eight patients with polycystic ovarian syndrome. All women were of reproductive age and had had menstrual disorders since menarche. A female adolescent with primary ovarian failure was found to have circulating autoantibodies to her ovaries. Primary ovarian failure in pediatrics is usually attributed to gonadal dysgenesis. Autoimmune oophoritis is a rare cause and is most often associated with Addison's disease and other autoimmune endocrinopathies. Our patient also had juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and vitiligo. To our knowledge, this case represents the first reported instance of this particular constellation of autoimmune disorders.

Forty-one women with advanced Hodgkin's disease were studied to determine the effect of combination chemotherapy on fertility and ovarian function. Histories and pretreatment ovarian biopsy specimens indicated normal fertility before therapy, thus implying no adverse effect of Hodgkin's diseases on female gonadal function.
