In vitro maturation in subfertile women with polycystic ovarian syndrome undergoing assisted reproduction.

BACKGROUND: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) occurs in 8% to 13% of all women of reproductive age and 50% of women presenting with infertility (i.e. inability to reach a pregnancy after 12 months or more of regular unprotected sexual intercourse). A proportion of these women ultimately need assisted reproductive technology. In vitro fertilisation (IVF)/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) are assisted reproduction techniques used to raise the chances of a pregnancy. In women with PCOS, the supra-physiological doses of gonadotrophins used for controlled ovarian hyperstimulation (COH) often

The impact of intermittent energy restriction on women's health.

Intermittent energy-restricted diets are used amongst women with overweight and obesity and a healthy weight. For those with overweight and obesity weight control is typically achieved through daily energy restriction (DER) which has reduced adherence and attenuated metabolic benefits over time. Several intermittent energy restriction (IER) regimens have been developed aiming to promote maintained weight loss and additional weight independent metabolic benefits including the 5:2 diet, alternate day fasting (ADF) and time-restricted eating (TRE). This review summarises the potential benefits or

Baseline and Corticotropin-Stimulated Blood Steroid Profiles in Women of Reproductive Age in India: A Cross-Sectional Study and Global Literature Review.

INTRODUCTION: Corticotropin (adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH))-stimulated blood steroid profile is useful in the diagnosis of rare adrenal disorders but their utility is limited due to lack of assay- and population-specific reference ranges. Hence, we conducted this study to establish the reference ranges for basal and ACTH-stimulated blood steroid profiles in Indian women of reproductive age. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 30 apparently healthy female volunteers aged 18-40 years. Blood samples were collected during the early follicular phase of the menstrual cycle at baseline

GLP-1 receptor agonist therapy and pregnancy: Evolving and emerging evidence.

The prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and obesity is increasing in young adults, posing significant risks around pregnancy. Obesity also impacts on fertility and the co-existence of polycystic ovarian syndrome increases the prevalence of cardiovascular metabolic risk factors. There has been a renewed interest in glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RA) in this context, due to their multi-dimensional impact on the reproductive axis, as well as their ability to simultaneously target weight loss and glycaemic control. There is, however, limited availability of safety data w

Pharmacogenomic of LH and its receptor: are we ready for clinical practice?

Luteinizing hormone (LH) is fundamental to support development and reproduction. It acts through a receptor expressed in the gonads, modulating mitogenic, anti-apoptotic, and steroidogenic signals. LH is also marketed as a drug for controlled ovarian stimulation (COS), where it is administered to women to support the action of follicle-stimulating hormone and can lead to specific responses, depending on the individual genetic background. These concepts underline the relevance of a pharmacogenetic approach to COS, in the attempt to optimize clinical outcomes and avoid adverse events. However, k

This narrative review summarizes the available literature on the association between In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) treatments and thrombosis, focusing on epidemiology and pathophysiology. Thrombosis is a rare IVF-related complication, with an incidence of approximately 0.2%, dramatically increased by ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). Arterial thrombosis, primarily associated with OHSS, is a rare and early event, while venous thrombosis, although more common, remains a rare complication of IVF. Venous thrombosis often affects the upper body. The thrombotic risk is higher during the first

Unraveling the Role of Cathepsin B Variants in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: Insights from a Case-Control Study and Computational Analyses.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) occurs in women of reproductive age, impairing reproductive and metabolic processes. Variations in the cathepsin B (CTSB) gene can influence the disease prognosis by changing the activity, stability, or expression. These single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) can affect critical cellular functions like the deposition of extracellular matrix, inflammation, and tissue repair, leading to the development of multifactorial diseases. Our study aims to investigate the association between PCOS risk and CTSB SNPs. In this case-control study, 150 PCOS cases and 150 healt
